Spring BreakThis month is Spring Break month for school children all across the country, and a few of

them find their way to Sunland Springs Village. Some of the school “children” are well into their 20’s, but whatever their age, the residents being visited need to make sure their guests are following community rules.

Remember that you must accompany your guests of any age while they are at the pool, the Fitness Center, or the Billiards Room. However, if you have adult guests (age 18 or older) staying one or more nights with you, you may obtain passes at the Activities Office that al-low them to use the facilities on their own. The passes are $5 per person, and there is a $15 family rate. The passes are good for 30 days.Swimming Pool Monitors

The last few years during Spring Break season, the Recreational Facilities Committee organized a group of volunteer homeowners to be Pool Monitors. The Pool Monitors were

effective in enforcing the pool rules, but, more importantly, they greatly reduced the tensions that invariably arise when a large number of people of all ages attempt to share a swimming facility.

We want to have Pool Monitors again this year, but we are in great need of volunteers. This is your opportunity to serve your community, enjoy being outdoors in the beautiful Arizona spring weather, and to meet many interesting people from all over North America. Contact Myra Lillie (480-892-2490) who is the principal organizer or call the Activities Of-fice, 480-354-8758.

Our goal is to have the Pool Monitors on duty throughout the month of March and into April during children’s hours seven days a week. They are identifiable by their attractive T shirts. Golf Carts

Every year I get reports of children, sometimes very young children, driving grandma’s golf cart on our streets. This practice is very dangerous even if you are accompanying your grandchild, and it freaks everybody else out. Remember, the streets in Sunland Springs Vil-lage belong to the city. To drive on any city street you must be a licensed driver and follow the rules of the road.Golf Course

Another report I get this time of year is of children and adults playing on the golf course. For insurance reasons only registered golfers are allowed on the golf course. So invite your guests to sign up for a round of golf, but otherwise they have to stay off the course.

Many, many thanks . . .. . . to all of you that

helped (by working or at-tending) our Car Show and Sock Hop for Sunshine Acres Children’s Home last month. We had over 60 cars and mo-torcycles and eight vendors.

Once again the “sell out” Sock Hop was a great suc-cess. Cash donations from individuals, clubs, vendors and dance ticket sales to-taled $3,317 for Sunshine Acres. There were 1329 pairs of socks collected.

Many thanks to all of you that participate in this worth-while and rewarding event.

“Spirits” of Spring . . .. . . will tickle your nose

on Wednesday, April 6. Bring your favorite wine or im-ported beer and appetizers to taste, test and savor from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM in the Courtyard. This will be a great time to kibitz with old friends and make some new ones. By the way, this is FREE. Please wear your nametag.Tax time is . . .

. . . coming and so is our

Taxpayers’ Soup Kitchen on Tuesday, April 19. The soup line forms at 5:00 PM, serving at 5:30 PM. Tickets need to be purchased in AD-VANCE at the “Poor House” (Activities Office). Price per person: 1 pound can of VEGATABLES. (Please no pineapple, peaches or fruit cocktail.) The “Upper Crust” (all excellent cooks from SSV) will be preparing their hearty vegetable beef soup and infamous bread pudding. Coffee, crackers and water will be provid-ed. Please wear your “poor

ole taxpayer” clothes and bring YOUR OWN BOWL, SPOON AND CUP.

Reminders . . .. . . for those of you

that will be leaving for the summer.

FILL OUT a house-watch form in the Activities Office.

CANCEL your subscrip-tion to the Arizona Republic. Re-subscribe when you re-turn. The Homeowner’s Association receives a com-mission for every subscrip-tion which puts $$$ into your

community improvement fund.

By: Pastor Milt ZeebThe month of April is The Indicator of Spring for

most people, particularly to a majority in AZ who are from out of state. I recall hearing as a child; “April brings the showers that make the flowers blossom in May.” Spring is the Season of Resurrection that brings Life back to God’s created nature. Arizona celebrates Spring’s return to life, when mountain slopes and Valleys are ablaze in the array of beautiful wild flowers.

The greatest power revealed on earth is celebrated in the spring season. Resurrection is the power of God in raising His Son from death to life. Easter is all about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. At one time, Jesus exercised

His Godly power in raising his friend, Lazarus, from the grave. He gave a powerful testimony to the power of God in Resurrection when he said, “I am The Resurrec-tion and The Life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies.” Believing, is the entrance key into the resurrected life Jesus promises to all who confess Him as personal Lord and Savior.

Springs Chapel Worship provides times of Worship and Praise to learn more of Life in Christ, the Risen Lord. You are welcome to attend Good Friday Communion Worship at 5 PM on April 22, and Easter Sunday Wor-ship at 9 AM on April 24 in Praise and Glory to God, celebrating Life in Christ our Lord.

We hope you enjoyed our “Time After Time…A Century of Music” concert on March 8; we certainly enjoyed singing for you. We sounded pretty good, huh?

We are very fortunate to have within our mix a person who will take over as Director, and that is Judy Herr. She is currently the director of the choir and organist for SSV Chapel, has taught music as a profession and as a school teacher, and we already know she will be a great leader. Thank you Judy from all of us.

On March 21 we gathered for our “End of Season” farewell dinner, delighted by a catered meal arranged by Mary Tasto consisting of Italian chicken garlic tomato pasta bake; Caesar salad, Tuscan bean salad, focaccia bread and carmelized brownies. Yum, it was sooooo good.

Have a great summer everyone. We are look-ing forward to starting practice in the fall for our Christmas Concert. See you then.

bible StudyBY: Ardella Burtman

We are careful to keep the class to one hour. There is no charge and no book to buy. Please bring your Bible - any translation will do.

Early in March we began a detailed study of Genesis. This is a verse by verse study, and we will be reading the entire book in class. We anticipate the class will take anywhere from six to nine months. We see no need to keep a schedule, so we will proceed as time and comments permit. Sylvia Hansen is the teacher.

You are invited to join us for this study of the book of Genesis – the “beginning of beginnings” - which is so impor-tant to the study of the Bible. Even if you have missed some classes or know you will miss some classes, you are welcome. Naturally, there is some building of content one class on the next, but also, in a sense, each class stands alone.

If you have any questions about the Bible study, please call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.

Around the VillageVArieTY Show

By Lyn MineoKaraoke Club put together a fabu-

lous Variety Show, February 27, and that’s exactly what the name implies -- a show which featured a galaxy of SSV Stars with many diversified types of acts that included singers, interpretive dance, comedy sketch, instrumentals and an impersonator.

One huge heart felt thanks to our Mistress of Ceremonies, Monica Rae Stein, and the incredibly talented cast members who all offer something unique and a wildly entertaining evening filled with music, comedy and laughter. An-other huge thank you to our Karaoke Club members and crew who volun-teered their time and energy to help make this a great success. For our appreciation we held an after show party for the cast and crew. Last but not least we thank you, the audience. We hope you saved your program, as it was a special invita-tion and a free coupon to join us at our next Karaoke Party, April 1, 2011.

After the show, the cast mingled with the audience. A few people asked about being in next years show. If any one is interested, we are always look-ing for new talent (singers, dancers, musicians, jugglers, magician, imper-sonators, fun skits, etc.). For more in-formation, call our Events Coordinator, Doris Havelka, at 671-1392.

A quorum of residents as verified by the Rossmar & Graham Community AssociationManagement Company was presentThe Sunland Springs Village Homeowners Annual meeting was called to order at6:30 PM by Craig Ahlstrom-President of the HOA, and President of the Farnsworth Development Company . Mr. Ahlstrom wel-comed everyone and thanked them for their continued interest and support of their HOA. He announced that proper meeting notice was given in accordance with the Arizona legal statutes for a meeting and confirmed that a quorum of 10 percent of HOA members was present. Members of 232 units were present exceeding the total minimum quorum requirement. He reported that earlier the 2010 meeting minutes had been published in the SSV Village Voice, made available on the SSV internet site and were posted on the HOA office bulletin board. Mr. Dave My-ers made a motion that the 2010 minutes be approved; Mr. Jim Palfini seconded the motion. Motion carried and the minutes were accepted.Mr. Ahlstrom next introduced Mr. Rob Felix, Senior Vice Presi-dent of Rossmar & Graham (RMG), Mr. Felix explained RMG was in its 41st year of management and has been the #1 senior community management group for the last 5 years in Arizona. RMG looks forward to continuing to serve the needs of Sunland Springs Village.Mr. Ahlstrom introduced Jeff Decker, Vice President of the Farnsworth Development Co. and Chairman of the HOA Advi-sory Committee; John Lippert-Association Manager. Then Mr. Ahlstrom introduced the current committee chairs who would give a brief overview and update on their committee’s work. HOA members who wish to join a committee were urged to complete a volunteer application. Members serve staggered limited terms. The committees choose their chairperson and that person represents their committee on the Advisory Board. The Advisory Board meets monthly. There are almost 60 volunteers participating in the Advisory Board Committees.Members of the SSVHOA Advisory Board, who would be giving individual committee reports are: Architecture Committee-Ralph Stokes; Buildings Committee-Dave Latta; Communications Committee-Allen Schaeffer; Finance Committee-Bob Nielson; Landscape Committee-Dena Kingsley; Recreational Facilities Committee-JoAnne Chapin; and Security Committee-Michael Tucker. Advisory Board member Fran Davidson served as Re-cording Secretary for the meeting.Committee Reports:Architect Committee: Chairman Ralph Stokes first recognized the members of the committee: Karen Bulkley, Becki Burch, Helen Denney, John Herr, Nancy Kadlec, and Laurie Gordon. The committee meets the first and third Tuesday of each month. Ralph stressed that residents complete the Architectural Change

Request Form and submit them for approval BEFORE making any changes to their property. Copies of the Architectural Policy Manual are available on the SSVHOA.com website or at the Activity Office. The Committee continues to be pleased with the cooperation it receives from residents. In 2010 the committee saw requests to repaint the exteriors of homes, change existing landscape, add fences, add aluminum patio covers, add satellite dishes; paint driveways and add solar panels. Ralph wanted to caution residents regarding contractors soliciting business door to door. He also reminded us that we are a NO soliciting community. The committee is always looking for residents willing to serve. He invited HOA members to volunteer and pickup a membership application at the close of the meeting or in the Activity Office. Building Committee Chairman Dave Latta acknowledged the hard work of his committee members: Jim Palfini, Joe Ricci, Sherlan Baker, Frank Harvey, Tom Carroll, Kathy Thompson, Steve Heyer, Fred Kramer and Bob Shields. The committee:• Monitors the maintenance and repair of all of the common area buildings including the Auditorium, Activities Buildings, Super-stition Room, Fitness Center, Pool Buildings, Softball Field, Dog Park and HOA walls.• Oversees and recommends community improvements to HOA Buildings. They meet monthly, but twice a year they conduct a formal inspec-tion of the facilities. They also make sure annual maintenance needs don’t get behind schedule. Often based on suggestions from residents, the Building Committee provides value added improvements. This next year they worked on suggestions for the South Recreational Complex; as well as the Tennis/Bocce Storage area; the Woodshop; Ethernet access in the various meeting rooms; auditorium roof repair; perimeter walls and the various activity rooms. Communication Committee Chairman Allen Schaeffer acknowl-edged his fellow committee members: Sheila Bauer, Bob Gray, Jane Harrel, and Richard Denney. Additionally, there are several residents, not members of our committee, who provide important services to the Village as adjunct members: Jim Lloyd, Darlene Jasperson, Diane Castelli, Fran Davidson and Bonnie and Harlan Steinle. The mission of the communications management committee is to strengthen the sense of community among SSV residents by creating informed awareness of the events, activities, state of the HOA, policies of the HOA, and issues facing our HOA.1. Channel 22: Darlene Jasperson, Diane Castelli and Jim Lloyd, continue to make substantial timing, content and appearance enhancements to aid viewing. 2. Auditorium Electronic Media equipment: Bob Gray acts as the Committee liaison for the system, and has put together a procedure for your club or organization to learn to run this installation. He and committee member, Richard Denney, share this knowledge and assist individuals and groups who may wish to use it.3. Continued use of two electronic products we call the SSV List servers: 1) ssvEnews - E-News notes are HOA one-way internet messages providing facility’s status, important announcements or event notifications generally from John Lippert and Janet West. 2) SSVForum is a ‘Blog’ used by residents to keep up on current events and share information and recommendations or concerns about various services. Harlan and Bonnie Steinle administer the listserv. If you are not a current subscriber of these free listservs, use the forms available on the sign-in tables or the Activity Office. 4. The Village Voice, under the Editorial Board leadership of Jane Harrel, exists both in print and electronic form, with copies archived on our web site back to July 2009. You can read these

copies wherever you can sign on to a computer by accessing SSVHOA.COM5. The HOA website provides necessary information and has some interactive options. Visit SSVHOA.COM to see all the updates, including the Village Voice and, of course, the widely used FREE Classified Ad section. There are over 1500 hits on the website each month. Let your friends see what life is like at SSV by surfing SSVHOA.com 6. 2011 Village phone directory –Resident Maureen Coniglio – our adjunct proofreader - edited each and every entry for errors and redundancy. The cover photo was by Paul Leber. We will now be providing printed cumulative monthly update reports of all changes to the directory. This year because of supply delays at the printer in Texas, the directory won’t be distributed until March. Watch for details as to when you can pick it up. If you have updates or corrections to the directory please complete the ‘green’ form in the Activity Office and through out the year, we will send out regular updates. Please provide us feedback so we can continue to improve the website, the newspaper, Channel 22, and the email listservs or any other communication forms. You can do this online without coming to the office. Scroll to the bottom of any SSV web site page and click on the ‘Questions / Comments’ link. Your input, which can be for any committee, will reach a responsive com-mittee member.Last, we NEED you. If you have any experience as a writer, editor, photographer, proofreader, in public relations, in publishing, in data entry / update, in electronics or have computer based skills (especially with the web), then we welcome your help in one of two ways: Volunteer for one of the several open committee seats and get involved, or serve as an adjunct member. Volunteers make our community great. Volunteer forms for our committee – as with all others here – can be picked up in the HOA office. Landscape Committee: Currently Chairman Dena Kingsley, Emmet Kirscht, Steve Minker, Randy and Donna Souers, Jerry Nelson, Terry Steinkruger and Mary Catherine and Bob Myers compose the committee. The responsibility of the committee is to insure the community landscaped areas are in the best possible condition by identifying and recommending fixes and enhance-ments in a timely manner. The group meets monthly and each member has an assigned loca-tion or area to review especially when we have storms. Reports are issued to John Lippert. John then works with the landscape contractor and oversees repairs from storm damage and correc-tions to problem areas. A major storm in January, 2010 damaged trees, the irrigation and electrical system and the landscape budget. Currently the land-scaper is applying pre- and post emergent weed sprays; updating the granite areas and repairing the winter freeze damage. Last year the committee addressed a possible safety issue at the steps near the Tennis Courts; trees and bushes that may cause traffic hazards at village intersections; the irrigation system and the water retention basins. As the community grows with areas like the new SanTan Complex the size of the budget and responsibility list of the committee grows with it. Finance Committee: Vice Chairman Bob Nielson acknowledged the Finance Committee members: Howard Littell, Bill Barker, Burt Marcus, Fran Davidson, Paul Leber, Max Warren and Doy Gillespie. He acknowledged Don O’Toole, Gene Lutter and Kathy Bothun for their work in the past year.Bob Nielson noted the financial results for 2010. Revenue and expenses were close to plan with the major exception of the additional $20,000 for storm damage and irrigation systems. Over two-thirds of the $47,000 provided for various Village en-hancements was donated by our clubs and by BINGO. $48,000

for equipment and storm damage repair came from the Reserve Funds. Thanks to good management and our many volunteer residents, the SSV HOA finances are in good shape. For the first time, there is no contribution from the builder anticipated in the 2011 Budget.Major activities of the committee include:1. Reviewing and monitoring the Operations Accounts, Bank Ac-counts, the Budget, the Activity Funds and the Reserve Fund. 2. Encouraging the various committees to recommend enhance-ments to the community through the use of the Village Enhance-ment Fund and Bingo.3. Recommend spending priorities and investment choices.4. Review the Reserve Study Recreational Facilities Committee: Chairperson JoAnn Chapin spoke on the responsibility of the group to assess the current and projected needs of our various recreational venues at SSV including: swimming facilities, fitness center, tennis courts, softball field, shuffleboard courts, bocce ball courts, horseshoe courts, pickle ball courts, and the dog park. Members included: Carol Boots, Roy Brandli, JoAnne Chapin, Myra Lillie, Laurie Smith, George Perry, Craig Smith, Deena Warren, Rich Hunt and Max Tiede. Four of the members will be leaving this year. The group meets the first Monday of the month at 1PM and welcomes Snowbirds to the committee.Security Committee: Chairman Michael Tucker said the Secu-rity Committee works to create a comprehensive home security program organized around a full strength Block Watch program. Mr.Tucker works with fellow members Jere Barcellina, Lyn Mineo, Bill Shea and Joe Camporese to address security concerns and manage the Block Watch areas. We currently have 68 organized Blockwatch areas with captains, we need more. Captains work with their fellow neighbors and communicate information and security violations such as thefts in of the Village. Block Watch groups need to meet once a year to comply with SSV guidelines and twice a year to agree with the Mesa Police Dept. guidelines and to qualify for a Block Watch street sign. We had a great response to the October G.A.I.N. (Neighborhood Watch Night), with 28 Blockwatch groups holding their semi-annual meetings. We plan to hold a similar session this fall and in the spring of next year. The group reviews the police statistics for the area every month and proudly reports a 35% reduction in any type of crime in the area over the last 2 years. Most of the police reports are on welfare checks and suspicious people. We must not become complacent and we need to get 100% cover-age of our homes. Information needs to be given to the Security committee not just talked about on a blog, so that the police have good data and can address the issues. If you can serve as a Blockwatch Captain or as a member of the Security Commit-tee please fill out an application, talk to a committee member or contact John Lippert.Presidents Report:Mr. Ahlstrom thanked the committees for their great reports and emphasized the need for new committee members for the groups. Because of term limits and general turnover there are numerous openings on the committees at this time of the year. He thanked all the many volunteers who help make the Village a great place to live. Because of all our Volunteers we have a great community and they have saved over an estimated $50,000 a year in support costs. Bingo has give back to the community with nearly $146,000 over the years for such things as benches, auditorium media equipment, sunscreens, black out blinds, softball field improvements, computer equipment and various activity building upgrades. Craig also recognized the special work of Janet West-Activity Manager including keeping things organized and supporting the volunteers. He said when you see her, tell her she is doing a great job. Craig then noted the work of John Lippert who handles the many concerns of the residents and manages the HOA business.Mr. Ahlstrom said that the Farnsworth Co. still plans on adding residents to the formal HOA board, so that as the time comes for Farnsworth to leave, there will be a smooth solid transition. It has been their goal since the beginning to leave the HOA in good shape. Mr. Ahlstrom next provided an update on various topics:1. Almost 1900 units have closed; there are 50 new units under or committed for construction. 20 units have sold since Jan. 1st, up nearly 30% from 2010.2. Phase 7 work (south between Springwood and Wattlewood and north of Guadalupe) continues. 27 homes have been sold in the new area.3. The Compass Bank at Signal Butte and Baseline should be opening in the next few months.4. Groundbreaking will be scheduled soon for the South San Tan Recreation Complex. The $3 million project will be a great addition. The plans are into the city for approval.5. The new Memory Care and Assisted Living project will be started toward the end of the year and Farnsworth is getting some good positive feedback on the plans.Mr. Ahlstrom also reminded everyone of the Annual Farnsworth BBQ at noon on Thursday, March 10 and that they needed to get their tickets at the Sales Office by March 4. There will great food, a great party, entertainment and prizes. Ross Farnsworth is planning on attending again this year. He also told about the special Balloon Glow planned for Febru-ary 26, at 4pm with 10 large hot air balloons at the golf course. This follows the Open House being held earlier in the day at the Sales Office. FINANCE REVIEW- John Lippert

A brief review of the SSV HOA Annual Financial Report handed out earlier was given by John Lippert. Highlights included:1. Administrative Expenses reflect a change in processing by Rossmar & Graham instead of Farnsworth of payroll expense. All salaries including the maintenance personnel are now con-solidated under Administrative. 2. Cox Cable has now reconciled the number of homes serviced with the numbers billed. Despite our notifications, Cox had been under billing SSV.OPEN FORUMMr. Ahlstrom explained the ground rules for the question and answer period. Per the CC&R’s, the Chairman shall establish reasonable rules to expedite the meeting. He also said that this is not the time to complain about individual construction issues with your home, but to address questions regarding the HOA. Also, they will try to answer questions as quickly as possible but if they can’t, they will get back to you. He also introduced HOA Boardmember Jeff Decker who is avail-able at the Sales Office and runs the Golf Course. Comment: Mr. Ahlstrom noted that in the new medium areas along Guadalupe there is a new style flood light installed with plugs for the holiday decorations. Question: Would it be possible to replace the older style flood-lights?Answer: Mr.Ahlstrom said they would look into getting replace-ments and see what the costs would be. Question: Why did the maintenance payroll get reduced? Answer: John Lippert explained the funds were moved as part of the consolidation by RMG under the Administration expense line and would no longer be reported seperately. Question: When will Guadalupe be opened to Springwood? Will it be done as part of the new complex? Answer: No, the roadway will not done until the second part of Phase 7 is started. That should be sometime later next year. In the meantime, only the intersection of Springwood & Guadalupe will be developed. Access will be via New Castle in the interim.Question: Where on Signal Butte is the Memory Care Center going to be? Answer: The Memory Center will be just south of the Construc-tion Yard. The city is currently improving the road there now. Question: Any thoughts on developing a grocery store closer to here?Answer: We are not in the business of that type of development. Perhaps in the future someone else may do it in the northwest corner of Signal Butte & Guadalupe. But there is no activity now in that area.Question: Is there an error on the Reserve Study Expenses? The detail shows $48,369 but the summary shows $36,939. Answer: John apologized and agreed it was an error in updating the form from last year, yes, $48,369 was the actual costs for the year and he will correct the final report. Craig added that our Reserve Study is in excellent shape with 98% coverage of future reserve expenses already in savings. Comment: It was noted that there have been several recent events in the Auditorium that would have been better using the Audio Visual equipment (large screens in particular) Is there some way we can use them more often, especially for the viewers in the back of the room?

Answer: Yes, we will look into better utilization of the equipment and training for those who want to use it. Question: What is the timetable for the Memory Center?Answer: Construction will start by the end of this year and plans are for it to be ready by the end of 2012.Question: I am tired of the temporary softball signs, are we ever going to get real signs?Answer: Craig said, he would have it looked into. John added that the Recreational Facility Committee has it as a project this year. There being no more questions or comments, a motion by Jerry Nelson was made to adjourn the meeting, seconded Mary Cath-erine Myers and approved unanimously.Meeting adjourned at 7:36 PM.Respectfully submitted, Fran Davidson- Secretary, HOA Advisory Board

SSV Forum---SSV eNewsSSVCC Forum

By Harlan Steinle and Jerry RoganThere are three com-

puter ‘tools’ available to SSV residents to keep updated and informed about happenings in Sunland Springs Village. 1. SSV Forum2. SSVeNEWS3. SSVCC Forum (Computer Club Members Only)

All three listservs are hosted by Yahoo. Registra-tion for any of the listservs is free and you do NOT have to be a member of Yahoo to be subscribed, BUT you need to sign up for each listserv SEPARATELY.

The three listservs serve different functions.

SSV Forum is a listserv that allows for reading, reply-ing, and/or posting. Post-ing content is restricted to

items of interest, including items for sale, to SSV resi-dents. This listserv is a good place to find out what doctors and other services your SSV neighbors recommend.

SSV ENews is a ‘one-way’ listserv meaning that ONLY HOA announcements are made, thus you can only READ the postings. There is no option of responding to the postings.

SSVCC Forum is a com-munications service for SSV Computer Club members to promote the exchange of information amongst club members. We also refer to this as “Ask the Experts” forum. This could be for computer problems and solutions, class and presentation suggestions, computer items for sale or

wanted, etc. Visit www.ssvcc.com for club and forum mem-bership information.

How to be signed up for EACH of the three Listservs (groups):

SSV Forum: Send an e-mail to [email protected] and include the follow-ing four items:1. Your first and last name2. The e-mail address you want to use to be subscribed3. Your street address4. Your telephone number

SSVeNEWS: Go to the SSV HOA office and com-plete the sign up form.

SSVCC Forum: Visit www.ssvcc.com for addi-tional information on the Computer Club as well as SS-VCC Forum membership.

Sure, fast door to doctor time is important. But in an emergency, you want that door to be at Banner

hospital in the east valley to receive the Gold Seal from the Joint Commission for our Stroke Center and be named an Accredited Chest Pain Center. You’ll also gain access to one of the country’s top heart centers, Banner Heart Hospital. Both hospitals are part of Banner Health, one of the top 10 health systems in the U.S. for patient care according to Thomson Reuters. And with average wait times of only thirty minutes, your emergency decision should be easy. Don’t you feel better already?

Do Yoga - be happy!By Christine Marcus

According to a new study from Boston University School of Medicine, YOGA boosted mood more effectively than walking! Quoting Dr. Chris Streeter, “The study showed an increase in GABA levels, a neurotransmitter in the brain. This is the first study to find a behavioral intervention -- YOGA in this case -- that has an effect on brain chemistry similar to that of antidepressants.”

Try downward facing dog, tree pose, warrior, chair, plank, dolphin, pigeon, just some of the many poses we do in YOGA at SSV. YOGA will promote relaxation thru breathing techniques, increase flexibility, and strength. So, boost your mood, be happy, do YOGA!

YOGA is done barefoot. Wear comfortable clothes to move in. M – W – F at 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM. SSV Auditorium. Cost is $3.50. Questions?Call Chris, 986-6092

Caution Needed on wattlewood At

guadalupeIf you have traveled north or south on Wattlewood

from Guadalupe, you have probably noticed that there have been many changes to this area of our village, and that the traffic congestion is becoming a real challenge for the intersecting streets just north of Guadalupe Avenue.

Phase 7 is now being built to the East of Wattlewood, temporarily causing more traffic to flow into Wattlewood from New Castle (Phase 7’s primary access.) Wattlewood curves just north of Guadalupe creating a restricted vi-sion area where drivers must take caution and take notice of traffic entering Wattlewood from New Castle, Nell Avenue and Teakwood Circle. The city of Mesa has made use of portable electronic speed signs and recently erected a permanent “Intersection Sign” to alert drivers traveling South on Wattlewood as they approach Nell to be attentive of traffic entering Wattlewood in this area; especially at the curve near Nell Avenue. Please be alert and pay attention to the sign and recognize that the ad-ditional traffic, possible parked cars at the cluster of mail boxes and/or a parked Postal truck require your attention and a prudent speed when in this area.

For your own safety, as well as your neighbors PLEASE SLOW DOWN and PAY ATTENTION

Lot of winners to talk about this month. First of all, the Mixed Doubles tournament on March 4: First place went to Jim Hartman and Diane Sawyer; Second place to Frank Harvey and Gail Hartman and Third Place to Ed Sondrol and Barb Harvey. Maybe there was some hanky-panky going on here. Lots of the same last names……

We are proud to announce that the Ladies Cactus League team from SSV are Champions. We had to play our closest competitors the last two weeks of the season. It was touch and go for a while, but we prevailed by 13 games. Whew! Con-gratulations to Sharon Herr and Joani Baronti, Joan Loux and Mary Catherine Myers, Kathy Boehner and Linda Wilson, Elaine Brunkhorst and Patty Rolfs, Susan Brady and Jane Harrel and Nancy Patterson and Jolene Rickard.

LibrArY NewS

By: Jan OrrThe library committee processed

600 books in the month of February. We received many large print books which we are always short on. We also received lots of 2010 publications. Thank you to all who donated.

There is a lot of reading going on with the weather being so cool. We are delighted that the library is getting so much use.

As we head toward the time when people begin to go north, we are thinking about summer and how our committee dwindles to just a few people. If you live in SSV all year and are interested in helping out in the library for the summer, please contact Jan Orr at 480-354-6395. We make it as simple as possible to maintain the library, so there is not much to learn. We need a few people to shelve books and keep things straightened out.

The lock has finally been fixed on the door. Please remember to bring your key card.

SATurDAY buNKoBy Joe Fusaro

Come join your neighbors George and Lynda White, Ada and Warren Wright, Agnes O’Byrne, Dee Smith, Julia Houck, Judy Sigl, Karen Frazer, Linda Desario, Pam Pitman, Joe and Linda Fusaro at Saturday Bunko We meet at 2:30 PM in the Majestic Card room on the second Saturday of every month, even in the summer.

Bunko is played with dice and is a very simple game to learn. We collect $3.00 to be distributed for the seven winning categories.

At the end on Bunko, we also play a game for $1.00 called “Left Center Right.” There are two winners in the game. We are usually finished by 4:30 PM.

For more information or for a copy of the playing rules for either game, contact me, Joe Fusaro by email at [email protected] or call 480-951-3674.

SSV CoMPuTer CLubBy Jane E. Harrel, Moderator, [email protected]

April is here and that means that this is the last month of weekly meetings. But we still have a full month of programs planned especially for you.

April 6: Business Meeting, with a short topic of the year in review.April 13: Windows Live Essentials, Kate GertzApril 20: Summerizing your computer / Brainstorming feedback if/as requestedApril 27: Cox Communications, Vince Hilyard (This program may change)The Computer Club had initiated a place where you can ask questions or give help to

others by email. It is called [email protected]. This is a listserv similar to SSV Forum, but exclusively for Club members. Have a problem? Write an email addressed to [email protected], and one of our experts will answer you. There is another story in the paper about the difference of the current listservs in the Village. Please read that article if you are confused about which is which.

Starting in May, we will be on summer schedule which means that meetings will be held the first and third Wednesdays of the months through September. Still in the Superstition Room and starting at 10:00 AM. No dues are required, no business is transacted and no attendance is taken, so if you currently are not a member of the Club and want to try us out, come and be a part of the lively discussions starting in May.

Softball Spotlight

It’s now April, the cacti are blossoming, and the SSV Softball Club continues seasonal activities that began last winter. We want to remind our fans/supporters that the Softball Club sells soda pop and snacks at all Thursday evening Bingo games, beginning when Au-ditorium doors open around 5:30 p.m. and ending after intermission.

Proceeds raised for the Softball Club treasury are used toward soft-ball field upkeep (including water-

ing) and team(s) equipment, etc. Your generous assistance to make our varied fund-raisers successful (including our recent past Pancake Breakfasts and Hamburger Feast), is greatly appreciated. We owe the SSV community a huge debt of THANKS for the great backing we’ve received this year…please come back next year just as strong!

The SSV Softball Club held its semi-annual meeting on March 14. A new slate of officers and team managers was elected for the 2011-2012 season. Due to print deadlines, new officers and managers will be announced in next month’s edition of the “Village Voice.”

Fall and winter league play wrapped up last month but there may be spring league games orga-nized for the “off-season” (check bulletin boards and Channel 22 for up-to-date schedule information, as applicable). As of this writing, open practices for Softball Club mem-bers/authorized guests were slated for 9:00 AM every Tuesday/Thurs-day/Saturday at the SSV softball field during the month of April.

The women’s team, the SSV Scorpions, continues to recruit po-tential new team members. Any la-dies who are current SSV residents and who would like to play softball (or even just try their hand at it!)

should contact Patti Finney, Scorpi-ons team manager, at 480-982-7747, for more detailed information.

We are publicizing our field usage policy for SSV residents/ho-meowners’ and their guests only (not applicable for organized teams not authorized/recognized by the SSV Softball Club). Residents who wish to reserve the softball field for their personal use should call Rex Smith at 380-8544 for reser-vations. Reservations are available on a non-interference basis with existing teams’ playing schedules throughout the season.

Happy Easter/Happy Travels, Snowbirds!

February 11 was a fun day for all as the Canadians hosted couples golf. Rae and Donna Wallin and Larry and Susan Wood chaired the day which started with hosted Tim Horton’s coffee from Canada plus donuts served at the pro shop. After a nice day of golf with prizes, the evening social was “a sea of red and white” and wonderfully decorated by Rick and Mae Otto’s committee.

Thanks to our own Terry O’Rourke who is a retired RCMP from Canada we had an honor guard of two RCMP officers to greet the guests as they entered the auditorium. They also became our flag bearers later.

Complimentary beverages - many thanks to Mac Vinet, were served at the social by Canadians and over 50 door prizes were distributed courtesy of Canadian members.

After both US and Canadian anthems were sung and a prayer of thanks including thanking our US friends for their gracious welcome to Canadian citizens, a delicious roast beef dinner was catered under the direction of Bev and Brian Hyde. The evening finished up with a fun skit “farm against city” performed by Lois Mayor, Marion Keebaugh, Iris Huculak, Verita Van Diemen, Kathy Connolly, Susan Wood, Donna Wallin and Bev Hyde depicting the game of curling...a Canadian tradition!! Some wonderful pictures were taken by Verita Van Diemen and we have an album of an evening and day of memories! Thanks to all who helped out that day and preparing for it!!

Also in February couples golf celebrated two hole-in-ones. On February 18 Carolyn Pat-terson scored a hole-in-one on Superstition 2, 98 yards with a 7 iron. On February 25 Dennis Boyd scored a hole-in-one on Four Peaks 9, 165 yards with a 5 wood. Lots to celebrate!!

KArAoKe PArTY

By Lyn MineoDo you remember the gal’s poodle skirts,

colorful neck scarf’s, saddle shoes, rolled up jeans and cigarettes tucked in the sleeves of the guy’s tee shirts? As you looked around, it almost felt like being in the 50’s again.

Everybody took cover when Ronnie Co-hen and I sang “One Eyed One Horn Flying Purple People Eater” We were saved by the girl’s rendition of “Mr. Sandman.” The house

rocked as we all held on to our seats and sang “Rock Around The Clock.” During the night Doris Havelka challenged us with some 50’s trivia questions and gave 20-plus prizes.

Almost everyone dreams of being a star, here’s your chance…we’ll make you shine! Don’t know all the words? No problem, we have a book with thousands of great songs to choose from and the words are scrolled on a TV screen. Don’t want to sing by yourself or in a group. No problem, just sit in your chair, sing-a-long with the crowd or be entertained by others.

Our next Karaoke Party will be pure fun with those “Feel Good Vibes” as we feature some great Motown tunes. So come on down…Friday, April 8 in the Superstition Room from 7 – 9 PM. This is the last month to use your free coupons for the Karaoke Party (given to everyone who came to our Variety Show). Guests always welcome, and only $1.00 at the door. Bring your own drink and snack to share. See flyer for information.

Ladies LuncheonBy Jackie Muller and Darla Martin

The Sunland Springs gals again received the royal treatment at the San Tan Village. We began our March outing at the beautiful Brio restaurant. The 180 meals were served with precision by the pleasant staff and were a true taste delight. The Crème Brule was a fitting compliment to a great lunch.

After lunch many received gift certifi-cates to Brio and Macys. Of course, they were eager to spend their new found wealth, so off to Macys we went, where the friendly staff

greeted us at the door with gift bags. After a pleasant afternoon of shopping, we gathered at Macys’ Starbucks for frozen coffee samples and prizes that included facials by Shiseido, cosmetics by Clinique, several gift baskets, an overnight stay at Legado Hotel and more.

The way the Springs gals were busy visit-ing and giggling the entire afternoon, it’s safe to say that the outing was a hit.

We encourage your support of San Tan Macys and Brio. They were very gracious to our group.

“I had three previous hearing aids and became convinced that none of them would ever perform at a high level. This all changed when I tried Zounds. I no longer have to look at someone when they talk because I can hear everything. Besides the sound quality, all the added features are simply unbelievable. I actually made my brother get his own pair and he’s now a Zounds fan too.“ - Marshall S., Pennsylvania
