Switch Position
1. Basic Diagnostics ProcedureA: BASIC PROCEDURES1. GENERAL
The m ost important purpose of diagnostics is to de-termine which part is malfunctioning quickly, tosave time and labor.

Determine what the problem is based on the sym p-tom.
3. PROBABLE CAUSE OF TROUBLE
Look at the wiring diagram and check the system scircuit. Then check the switch, relay, fuse, ground,etc.
4. LOCATION AND REPAIR OF TROUBLE1) Using the diagnostics narrow down the causes .2) If necessa ry, use a voltmeter, ohmm eter, etc.3) Before replacing certain component parts(switch, relay, etc.), check the power supply,ground, for open wiring harness, poor connectors,etc. If no problems are encountered, check thecomponent parts.

After repairing, ensure that the system operatesproperly.
B: BASIC INSPECTION1. VOLTAGE MEASUREMENT
1) Using a voltmeter, connect the negative lead to agood ground point or negative battery terminal andthe positive lead to the connector or component ter-minal.2) Contact the positive probe of the voltmeter onconnector (A).The voltme ter will indicate a voltage.3) Shift the positive probe to connector 6). hevoltmeter will indicate no voltage.

4) With the test set-up held as it is, turn the switchON. The vo ltmeter will indicate a voltage and, at thesame time, the light will come on.5 ) The c ircuit is in good orde r.If a problem such asa lamp failing to light occurs, use the proceduresoutlined above to track dow n the malfunction.
2. CIRCUIT CONTINUITY CHECKS
1) Disconnect the battery terminal or connectorsothere is no voltage between the check points.Contact the two leads of an ohmmeter to each ofthe check points.If the circuit has diodes, reverse the two leads andcheck again.2) Use an ohmmeter to check for diode continuity.When contacting the negative lead to the diodepositive side and the positive lead to the negativeside, there should be continuity.When contacting the two leads in reverse, thereshould be no continuity.

3) Symbol 0-0 ndicates that continuity existsbetween two points or terminals. For example,when a switch position is at3, ontinuity existsamong terminals 1, 3 and 6, as shown in the tablebelow.

3. HOW TO DETERMINE AN OPEN CIR-CUIT
1) Voltmeter Method:An open circuit is determined by measuring thevoltage between respective connectors and groundusing a voltmeter, starting with the connector clos-est to the power supply. The power supply mu st be
turned ON so that current flows in the circuit. If volt-age is not present between a particular connectorand ground, the circuit between that connector andthe previous connector is open.

2) Ohmmeter method:Disconnect all connectors affected, and check con-tinuity in the wiring between adjacent connectors.When the ohmmeter indicates infinite, the wiringis open.

4. HOW TO DETERMINE A SHORT CIR-CUIT
1) Test lamp method:Connect a test lamp (rated at approximately 3watts) in place of the blown fuse and allow currentto flow through the circuit. Disconnect one connec-tor at a time from the circuit, starting with the onelo-
cated farthest from the power supply. If the testlamp goes out whe n a conne ctor is disconnected,the wiring between that connection and the nextconnector (farther from the power supply) is short-ed.

2) Ohmmeter method:Disconnect all affected conne ctors, and check con-tinuity between each co nnector and ground. Whenthe ohm meter indicates continuity between a pa r-ticular connector and ground, that connector isshorted.

C: HOW TO READ WIRING DIAGRAMS1. WIRING DIAGRAMThe wiring diagram of eac h system is illustratedso that you can unde rstand he p ath through which the elec-tric current flows from the ba ttery.Sketches and c odes are used in the diagrams. They should read as follows:
Each connector and its terminal position are indicated by a sketch of the conne ctor in a discon nected statewhich is viewed from the front.

The number of poles or pins, presence of a lock, and pin number of each terminal are indicated in thesketch of each connector. Color code
When one set of connectors is viewed from thefront side, the po le numbers of one connec tor aresymmetricalto those of the other. Whe n these twoconnectors are connected as a unit, the poleswhich have the same number are joined.

Electrical wiring harness:The connectors are numbered along with the num-ber of poles, external colors, and mating connec-tions in the accom panying list.
The sketch of each connector in the wiring dia-gram usually shows the (A) side of the connector.The relationship between the wire color, terminalnumber and connector is described in the figure.NOTE:A wire which run s in one direction from a connectorterminal sometimes m ay have a different color fromthat which runs in the other direction from that ter-minal.

2. Working PrecautionsA: PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING
WITH THE PARTS MOUNTED ONTHE VEHICLE
1) When working under a vehicle which is jacked-up, always be sure to use sa fety stands.2) The parking brake must always be applied dur-ing working.Also, in automatic transmission vehi-cles, keep the select lever set to the P (Parking)range.3) Be sure the workshop is properly ventilatedwhen running the engine. Further, be careful not totouch the belt or fan while the engine is operating.4) Be careful not to touch hot m etal parts, especial-ly the radiator and exhaust system immediately af-ter the engine has been turned off.
B: PRECAUTIONS IN TROUBLE DI-AGNOSIS AND REPAIR OF ELEC-
1) The battery cable must b e disconnected from thebattery's (-) terminal, and the ignition switch mustbe set to the OFF position, unless otherwise re-quired by the diagnostics.2) Securely fasten the w iring harness with clampsand slips so that the harness does not interfere withthe body end parts or edges and bolts or screws.3) When installing parts, be careful not to catchthem on the wiring harness.4) When disconnecting a connector, do not pull thewires, but pull while ho lding the connector body.

5) Some connectors are provided with a lock. Onetype of such a connector is disconne cted by push-ing the lock, and the other, by m oving the lock up.In either type the lock shape mus t be identified be-fore attempting to disconnect the connector.To connect, insert the connector until it snaps andconfirm that it is tightly connected.
