Forward

Subby Meets The is based upon a bedtime

story that I told my daughter, Shelly, when she was very young.

Each episode about Subbys adventures was created and

improvised nightly. They incorporated lessons in values such asteamwork, kindness, independence, friendship, and helping out

our friends and neighbors.

Occasionally, while telling that nights Subby adventure, I would

fall asleep before Shelly did, at which time she would promptly

poke me until I awoke to finish the story.

The inspiration for the came during the

many times that I gazed out the windows of airplanes during

business flights, studied the cloud formations, let my

imagination go wild, and thought... wouldnt it be cool to walkand play on the clouds?

This is a story about Subby, an adventuresome bunny who

loves being outdoors in nature. Exploring the forest and

spending time with friends are two of Subby's favorite things

to do.

Subby's cottage in Tipitoe Forest stands next to a majestic

tree that has grown taller than all of the other trees in the

forest. This tree is known as The Enchanted Tree because it

has grown so tall that its top disappears into the clouds.

Subby often daydreams about what might be up above the

clouds and the adventures that might be waiting there.

One morning, Subby heard a familiar knock... knock-knock on

the door. Subby swung the door open and cheerfully said,

Good morning, my friend!

Standing there with a big smile on his face was Shy Teddy, a

timid yellow bear. He is one of Subby's best and most loyal

friends because they like to play and work together.

With a giggle, Shy Teddy replied, Good morning to you too,

Subby! Then they gave each other a big high-five hello!

Let's go visit Mary Alice, said Subby. She's probably

working in her garden today. Maybe we can help.

O.K.! said Shy Teddy.

Mary Alice is the hardest working and most generous person that

Subby knows in Tipitoe Forest. Nearly every day she wakes up, eats

her breakfast, and hurries outside to work in her garden. She grows

so many fruits and vegetables that she has enough to share with all

of her friends in Tipitoe Forest.

That morning Subby and Shy Teddy found Mary Alice, standing

among the rows of fruit trees, watering her garden.

Good day, Mary Alice, said Subby. Your garden is looking really

nice!

Mary Alice replied with cheer, Good morning, friends! Thank you

so much! I'm about to plant some pumpkin seeds so that we will

have pumpkins to make jack-o-lanterns for Halloween and pumpkin

pies for Thanksgiving.

I like pumpkins! said Shy Teddy. Can we help?

I would love your help, replied Mary Alice, happily. I still have to

finish watering. Would you two like to start planting without me?

Yes! Subby and Shy Teddy exclaimed.

Together, Shy Teddy and Subby began to plant the pumpkin

seeds. Shy Teddy dug holes in the dirt, then Subby dropped

several pumpkin seeds into each hole. Shy Teddy covered

the holes with dirt. Finally, Subby watered the area. Together

they planted three rows of pumpkin seeds.

When Mary Alice finished watering, she was surprised to see

how much work Shy Teddy and Subby had done. In an excited

voice, Mary Alice said, Thank you so much for your hard

work! By working together, we have finished todays

gardening in a jiffy.

Subby and Shy Teddy both told her that they were happy to

help anytime. Then Subby said, I have a great idea! Let's

gather some fresh fruit from the garden and have a tea party

at my cottage.

That sounds like fun! said Shy Teddy.

They gathered fruit from the garden and walked back through

Tipitoe Forest to Subby's cottage.

The three friends sat down to eat. Subby made a toast:

Here's to a great day working in the garden with my two best

friends! They all ate garden fresh fruit and drank tea until

their bellies were very full, and their eyes began to droop.

After the tea party, Mary Alice told Subby and Shy Teddy, I

should go home now and get some sleep. Tomorrow I have to

wake up early to water my garden.

I'm sleepy too, said Shy Teddy. I'll walk you home. Theyboth said good-bye to Subby and left.

Before bed, Subby looked out the window at The EnchantedTree. Thoughts swam through Subby's head about what

could be above the clouds at the top of the tree. Subby then

climbed under the snuggly covers and fell asleep.

After dozing for a while, Subby woke up and realized that thecottage lights were still on. Walking toward the light switch,

Subby looked out the window and saw The Enchanted Tree in

the bright moonlight. The tree was so beautiful that Subby

thought, Tonight I will find out what is at the top of my tree!

Overhead, the moon was high and white clouds werescattered across the deep blue sky. Stars twinkled in the

darkness. Subby looked up and could not see the top of The

Enchanted Tree.

Subby slowly and carefully began to climb the tree onebranch at a time. Up and up Subby climbed in the moonlight.

Climbing higher, Subby suddenly saw a shooting star and

stopped to make a special wish.

After climbing for what seemed like an hour, Subby's head

popped up above the clouds where another world could

finally be seen. Holding firmly onto the tree, Subby

carefully placed one foot on a cloud. It felt like stepping

onto a fluffy pillow. Then Subby let go of the tree and took

a gentle step forward onto another cloud.

After taking one more step Subby shouted, WOW! Look

at me! I'm walking on the clouds!

Subby kept walking and began to explore the exciting new

world above the clouds... a world very different from

Tipitoe Forest.

As Subby was walking on the clouds, a head suddenly

appeared. Subby was surprised to see a yellow dog with a

big smile and long, pointed ears hiding behind a cloud.

Hello, said the yellow dog. My name is Billy Dingo, Idon't think Ive seen you in the clouds before. What is your

name?

Hi! My name is Subby. This is my first time to walk on the

clouds. Before tonight, I never knew that I could!

Billy Dingo replied, Welcome! I can show you around if

youd like? There are a lot of fun things to do up here in the

clouds. I'll take you to meet one of my

friends.

Thank you, Billy Dingo, said Subby. That sounds like a

great idea!

As Billy Dingo and Subby began to walk, Subby asked, BillyDingo, what is a ?

Billy Dingo laughed and answered, Silly Bunny! We all are!

Everyone who comes up to play in the clouds is a

! Now you are a ,too!

Billy Dingo and Subby walked hand-in-hand. Subby felt that

the two had already become friends. All around them the

clouds were glowing in the moonlight. Subby was excited andfilled with delight.

After walking through the clouds for a few minutes, Billy Dingo

spotted his friend. He whispered to Subby,

My friend is sleeping on a bed of clouds. You wait here, I want to

wake my friend up with a surprise.

Subby watched nervously as Billy Dingo tiptoed closer and closer to

the bed of clouds. BOO! shouted Billy Dingo. Clancy jumped up

and they all laughed.

Clancy gave a big clown smile and said, Billy Dingo, you jokester! I

should have known it was you! Clancy was a big clown! He had onclown make-up, huge clown shoes, and goofy clown clothes.

Hi Clancy, Billy Dingo giggled. I have a new

friend for you to meet! This is Subby, and it's Subby's first time to

visit us in the clouds.

Clancy smiled and said, Nice to meet you, Subby. You are going to

have a great time up here! I know the perfect place to take you.

Clancy, Billy Dingo and Subby all walked together to go cloud

watching. When they arrived, Clancy and Billy Dingo showed

Subby how to float on the clouds. They laid there together

and watched the clouds float by.

Look over there! shouted Billy Dingo. That cloud looks like

a whale!

Subby pointed and exclaimed, That cloud looks like abuffalo!

Clancy giggled and said, Looks like a sheep to me!

After gazing at the clouds for a while, Clancy said, Let's go toCloudy Bay. I want to show Subby the bouncing clouds!

The three then walked to Cloudy Bay.

When they got to Cloudy Bay the clouds lifted them up highinto the sky. Clancy said, Watch me! and he jumped up

very high. Subby bounced even higher!

We are the bouncing ! exclaimed

Billy Dingo. The three of them jumped and somersaulted andhad a great time bouncing.

After a lot of bouncing fun, Subby got a little worried and told

Clancy and Billy Dingo, It's getting late. I must go back to my

cottage in Tipitoe Forest, but I'm upside down and turnedaround. I'm not sure where my Enchanted Tree is, how will I

find my way home?

Billy Dingo said, Don't worry Subby, I'll help you. Let's go

look for your tree together.

Clancy said, I don't know where your tree is, but I'll go find

Peggy Sis. She knows where everything is up here. She will

be able to help you get home. Next time you come to visit I

will take you cloud surfing. Subby and Clancy shook handsand said good-bye.

As Subby and Billy Dingo walked together, the clouds turned

gray and it began to rain. Billy Dingo gave Subby his extra

umbrella. Subby wondered how long it would take to find TheEnchanted Tree in the rain.

Suddenly, a rainbow appeared and they could see Subbys

tree next to it. Subby exclaimed with joy, We have found my

tree! I can go home now! Subby turned to Billy Dingo andadded, Thank you for helping me find my tree. Its so

beautiful in the clouds! This is a wonderful place to explore. I

will be back to play with you another day.

The new friends hugged each otherand said good-bye.

As Subby walked toward The Enchanted Tree to climb back

down to Tipitoe Forest, a beautiful black and white horsewith pink wings landed next to Subby and said, Hello, I'm

Peggy Sis, you must be Subby! Clancy sent me to help take

you home. Would you like a ride?

Yes, Im Subby. It's nice to meet you. I would love a ride.Could you please take me to my cottage in Tipitoe Forest?

No problem! Hop on my back, said Peggy Sis. We'll be

there in no time.

After Subby hopped on, Peggy Sis spread her wings and took

off. Subby had to hold on tight as they zoomed down through

a hole in the clouds.

As they flew below the clouds, Subby was surprised to see it

was already morning. Subby had spent the whole night with

the and the time had flown by.

When Peggy Sis landed beside Subby's cottage in Tipitoe

Forest, Subby got off and said, Thank you for the ride, Peggy

Sis. I hope to see you again soon.

You're welcome, Subby. See you again in the clouds, saidPeggy Sis. She said good-bye and flew high into the sky to be

with the other .

Back in Tipitoe Forest, Subby sat down on the bed and

thought, I had a fun time last night with my new friends, Billy

Dingo, Clancy and Peggy Sis. But, it sure is nice to be home in

my own cozy cottage.

Subby's wish on the shooting star... to be brave enough to

climb to the top of The Enchanted Tree... had come true.

Subby was a very brave bunny. Subby also thought, I am so

happy to finally know what is at the top of my tree, and I can'twait to go to visit the again!

Subby also couldn't wait to tell Shy Teddy and Mary Alice

about the . Someday, maybe they too

would become .
