MH stated that the present team needed to distribute tasks and decide which terms to focus on. 2013-049-1-400 Terminology on the Separation of Macromolecules - Hess MH stated that there is not much to do this week and that the plan is for MH to go to South Korea (before the next SPT meeting in Brazil) to finish the project. 2013-001-1-800 Structure-based Nomenclature for Regular Linear Star, Comb and Brush Polymers - Chen JC introduced the project, stating that it concerns the nomenclature of regular polymers and irregular polymers. The team need to finalize the document and then send it to SPT. 2010-036-1-400 Keywords - Slomkowski SS introduced the project and stated that it was believed that the project was going to be simple and straightforward. However, through working on the project, it has become apparent that it is more difficult due to differences between journals. This was to be the main discussion of the week. 2015-050-1-400 Definition of Terms Relating to the Ultimate Mechanical Properties of Polymers - Adhikari RA explained that discussions had been going on for three years on this topic before obtaining IUPAC funding to go ahead just this year. Therefore the plan for the project would be updated. NS joined the project. 201x-xxx-1-400 (Project Committee) Development of a Multilingual Glossary of Polymer Terminology with New Languages - dos Santos CdS explained that the project was in a ‘transitional phase’, having translated terms into Western languages, the team was now to look at character-based languages (but this worked had not yet been started). CdS stated that he needs to find out the link within IUPAC to sort out the website issues that he has been having for this project. 2012-048-2-400 A Brief Guide to Polymer Terminology - Hiorns RCH explained that he wished to use the Task Group’s opinions to edit the first page and then move on to select terms for the next page of the manuscript. 1.4 Social Events Warm thanks were extended to YY for his and his team’s organization of the evening meals, and also for the tour planned for the Friday. RCH expressed his warm thanks to PDT for his efficient work with the local team. 1.5 Invited Lecture and Discussion Terminology Through the Looking Glass, MH RCH introduced MH. During the introduction, RCH discussed the importance of continuity, which has been raised by PK, but has also been discussed by others within SPT prior to this.

MH gave an excellent and well-received lecture to give history, guidance and advice on SPT and Division IV activities. Action: MH to send slides to PDT. Action: PDT to send slides to SPT members and observers. JH stated how important it is that we continue to strongly represent the polymer culture and community. The consideration of both terminology and nomenclature should reflect the cultural strengths of our world-wide community. x RCH mentioned that the recently accepted Source-Based Nomenclature (2003-042-1-800 Source-based nomenclature – Jones) document is very important to meet with the needs of the polymer community, it is a major document in terms of polymer nomenclature. It also meet the expectations of the Nomenclature Division (VIII), and indeed we should work with them as much as possible, in a constructive manner. JC mentioned that we could/should invite somebody from CAS (Division of the American Chemical Society, ACS). This was agreed on. Action: JC to get the name of somebody from CAS and send this to RCH so that he can invite them to Brazil in 2017. 2.0 Project Statuses and Actions following work in SPT 2015-014-1-400 Guide (and Brief Guide) to Polymer Semiconductors Michael Walter (via skype). MW gave a report on progress made during the meeting. The team first came up with 10 broad categories with which to associate the 248 terms. Accordingly, 80 terms were placed into these categories, with the team highlighting terms that caused difficulty in associating to a single category and require further discussion. The team have found overlap with other projects/documents, which needs to be addressed. ACTION: MW to split up the terms amongst the members, who will then find which terms are covered/addressed in other projects. This needs to be done before the end of Dec 2016. 2014-033-1-400 Nomenclature and terminology relevant to lactic acid-based polymers: synthesis, structure, properties, applications and degradation Jiazhong Chen. JC gave an informal report to SPT, with a formal report to come from MV. The team involved JC, Stan, MV and TN, who went over previous comments made in the document; discussion section of the project is too long and the introduction may need shortening. ACTION: MV wants each member to send comments to him on the document (in terms of making in more concise). Electronic report from MV in Appendix 4.

2016-xxx-1-400 (Project Committee) Development of a Multilingual Glossary of Polymer Terminology with New Languages Claudio dos Santos. CdS discussed how the multi-lingual project evolved, what had been done and what needs to be done. The IT (computing) group of IUPAC needs to be more involved (using their server for security, for example). The team were previously using a word document/table for use in this project, but maybe excel will be better. CdS stated that they only have one translator for each language, but a system is needed to allow access to more than one translator for each language, using date stamps, for example. This is an expensive project. This needs to be discussed with Dr. F. Meyer to find out if the site can be housed within IUPAC and whether or not internal web-engineers might help. A question that was raised: “Can we get DIV IV people to lobby this project to IUPAC?” CdS surmised that this is a really important project that has been shown to work. PT joined the group. The team met again later in the week and spent most time on the transfer to the excel spreadsheet. Some translation has already started. CdS thanked OP for good contribution, who also joined the group. RCH invited CdS to write to Dr. F. Meyer with respect to enabling IUPAC web-hosting and technical support to reduce costs, and that he would strongly support funding for this project which was a flagship for SPT with a follow-up mail. ACTIONS: CdS to email Dr. F. Meyer about in-house IUPAC hosting and engineering support RCH to mail Dr. F. Meyer giving support. CdS to look into creating a beta-version for the future of this project (e.g. apps etc.). 2015-013-1-400 Brief Chain: Brief Guide to Polymerization Terminology Christine Luscombe. The Task Group had a very productive session and she recommends having skype meetings throughout the year. They are focusing on polymerization mechanisms in this brief guide. The team came up with an outline and today the team were actually writing sections of the document. ACTION: CKL to write up the document and send to team members by the end of the year. 2016-018-1-400 Brief Guide to Polymer Microstructure Natalie Stingelin. The Task Group discussed the referee reports, which were positive, and worked out the responses. The team then kicked-off the project and collected 180 terms, focusing on terms that cause problems in multidisciplinary research. In the future, the team will plan a Brief Guide with hyperlinks (this could be a new project). ACTION: NS to list the terms alphabetically, whilst checking existing definitions by the end of the year. This will then be sent to the team for discussion. 2013-001-1-800 Structure-based nomenclature for regular linear star, comb and brush polymers

JC. AF sent detailed comments a few days ago and so the team went through the comments. Most of the comments were not consistent with existing examples, so much work was done in dealing with the points. Indeed, much work remained to be done. It was decided to add a short list of terms to complement understanding in this nomenclature project. ACTIONS: JC and Task Group to finalise the document by the end of the year, final check with the Chair, to send it to SPT, and then target a new IUPAC project. 2009-047-1-400 Definitions and notations relating to stereochemical aspects in polymer science Chris Fellows. The team that met were SVM, OP, TN (skype) and GM (skype). Definitions were resolved in the current document. It will be an addendum. The idea of a fuller document was considered, however, it was seen that this would lead to many other considerations beyond the current scope. Indeed, that should be done in a new project. Documents sent to other members of the team. Follow-up meeting on Friday morning to finalise the document. Stereochemistry is delicate and the Task Group needed to ensure that mistakes were at all costs avoided. ACTION: CF to produce a completed manuscript by Friday for circulation to the team. 2015-050-3-400 Definition of terms relating to the ultimate mechanical properties of polymers Ramesh Adhikari. Observers (GR, OP and PC) were present in the team meeting and GR decided to join the project. An action plan was decided upon and then the team started to collate terms. ACTIONS: RA to collate all terms by September and all definitions by December. A document will be prepared for July 2017 in Brazil. 2014-033-1-400 (Project Committee) Polymeric Carriers: Nomenclature for polymeric carriers bearing chemical entities with specific activities and names Jiazhong Chen. MV is the chair, JC the local chair. The Task Group went over the whole document and the notes. The Introduction is ok, while the second part took more time. They have a guideline of how to name different types of conjugates. PC joined the project. ACTION: MV will send a version of the document to the task force in the next couple of weeks. Electronic report from MV in Appendix 4. 2016-050-3-400 Definition of Terms Pertaining to Polymers in the Solid State: Molecular Arrangement from the Nano- to the Micrometer Scale Natalie Stingelin. NS gave a report on CKO’s project. The team finished the document after some amendments. ACTIONS: CKO to write the abstract and send the document to RCH for clearance for a month’s review in SPT, send it to Roger/SPT by the beginning of 2017. 2010-007-1-400 Terminology for Chain Polymerization

Graeme Moad (via skype). The team carefully checked through the document. ACTIONS: GM will tidy the document and send to the Task Group by the end of July. CKL will look at the last section in particular. The other members of the team will go through the whole document before GM sends it to RCH and then SPT for one month, and to external experts for comments. This will be done by the end of August. 2015-032-2-400 (Project Committee) Synchronizing Wikipedia: Polymer Definitions and Terminology Michael Hess. Three new members joined the team; PT, GR and JM. In-depth discussions concerning getting the terms onto Wikipedia. Here is a link to track wiki page statistics- https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews ACTIONS: Members to be trained in editing Wikipedia pages. PDT and CF to populate the shared google spreadsheet (containing a list of terms) by the end of August. MH to distribute the list of ‘stubs’ and ask members to respond by the end of the year. RCH to work on two new pages – source-based and structure-based nomenclature. 2010-036-1-400 Keywords Stan Slomkowski. Skype with CKL along with other present team members. It was decided by the team that all keywords should be given in singular. Small modifications were made to the abstract and introduction. Editorial work was done to references etc. ACTIONS: Stan to change terms into singular and to send a draft to SPT next week for the last chance to add a keyword. By September, the final draft will be circulated to SPT for final approval. 2014-014-1-400 Terminology for modeling and simulation of polymers Stefano (Valdo) Meille. SVM explained that the project is complicated because the people aren’t present until next week (they will meet next Tuesday at MACRO). The team that were present went through the document-which is a list of terms with some exemplary definitions- and looked at problems that will be encountered. The list was colour-coded to categorise the terms. They have a ‘nearly definitive’ list of terms. The group met for a second time in the week. This time, TN, GM and Kremer joined by Skype. PC to be added to the Task Group. ACTIONS: The team to meet next Tuesday and create the definitive list. Work to be sub-divided into smaller task groups and each group are to hand back definitions of their area by the beginning of March 2017. SVM will be assemble these to create a complete first draft by July 2017 SPT in Brazil. 2012-048-2-400 A Brief Guide to Polymer Terminology Roger Hiorns. OP, MC and PT were involved. The team went through the first column of the document and decided that it will be a two-page document, rather than four pages. The

document was edited down carefully, working through the terms from the Purple Book to select the terms for the document. ACTIONS: RCH to distribute the next draft to the working party by October. RCH expects replies from the team by Feb 2017. RCH to look to tighten the participation of the project (the Task Group is getting too big). 2.1 Future Projects (Appendix 1) CdS is working on the 2016-xxx-1-400 Development of a Multilingual Glossary of Polymer Terminology with New Languages (Project Committee) project for submission. MH is passing leadership of the Characterization project to PDT. This will be a document of recommendations, rather than a Brief Guide. ACTION: RCH to discuss response to referees with PDT. 2.2 Project Extensions None to report. 2.3 Group participations (Appendix 3) The groups were updated in Appendix 3. ACTION: ALL- Going forward, project leaders should email PDT to add and remove members. New members: PC, OP, GR and PT joined SPT. JM was acknowledged for his work over the previous day and his presence is very much welcomed in Brazil next year. 2.4 Length of Chair of SPT RCH discussed the issue of the duration of the Chair of SPT. The Bureau decided that the Chair should stay as long as he/she has support from SPT. The Bureau recommended that there shouldn’t be a regular election, but there should be a monitoring process (collecting opinions across SPT). Discussion followed. It was agreed that a review every two years would be reasonable. MH commented that the Chair of the SPT should have a vote in the Division, that there should not be any rule that the Chair must come from a given part of the world and that the Chair should be selected as the best person for the job. RCH to take SPT’s proposal to the Bureau (RCH needs to define this proposal first). GTR commented that face-to-face skype meetings every six months for many projects should be brought in, as skype now works well. There was general agreement for this, however, it was noted that it only works when there are fewer coming in by skype than those actually

Appendix 4: Electronic Reports Received 2014-033-1-400 Nomenclature and terminology relevant to lactic acid-based polymers: synthesis, structure, properties, applications and degradation Electronic report from MV: ‘The « Lactic acid-based polymers » group was allowed to take place thanks to a SKYPE meeting attended by Jiazhong Chen, Tamaki Nakano, Stan Slomkowski and myself. The group looked carefully at the draft prepared for discussion on the basis of a few comments and questions received after that draft 6 was sent to all the members in advance. The major point to be discussed concerned the questioning of the long informative introduction by Stanislaw Penczek who found it not conformed to the way IUPAC recommendations are introduced. In particular we analyzed his short counter-proposition and found it not appropriate to help the future users understanding why naming this kind of chiral polymers is so complicated when one wants to take into account all the particularities found at different levels: number of monomers, number of synthesis routes, almost unlimited macromolecular structures, morphologies, material properties and especially degradation processes the latter affecting initial characteristics with time, including sometime on storage. These polymers are primarily applied to take advantage of their degradability and their biocompatibility and to some extent as biobased polymers. The recommendations will aim at being adopted by people of different disciplines including those of polymer science. If a user can find the right name easily a short introduction is enough. On the contrary, it will be difficult for him to find the information necessary for the selection of the suitable name from a literature too often confusing. Therefore, the group was in favor of keeping the long informative introduction. However, it was decided to test the feeling of a couple of non-specialist STP members present in Istanbul. All the minor points were considered and it was agreed that the participants will send further comments if any that may arise after the group discussion, this within a week or so. Submission of a final draft to the SPT was expected in Istanbul but this had to be postponed and will be done via Internet if this process is possible and agreed. The goal is to have the reviewing and publication processes completed before the end of 2017.’ 2014-033-1-400 (Project Committee) Polymeric Carriers: Nomenclature for polymeric carriers bearing chemical entities with specific activities and names Electronic report from MV ‘The group ‘Polymeric carriers’ met on Wednesday afternoon and on Thursday morning to discussed the draft 6 version complemented by written contributions supplied by Internet. The first part of the draft that includes abstract, introduction and a tentative glossary of terms of interest for this particular type of complex compounds was approved after a few minor modifications. The rest of the discussion was focused on tentative ruling and the application under the form of a general formula. Because of the large number of different cases (single or multifunctional active species and support or carriers) the different proposed formulas appeared much too complex and difficult to exploit by users of different disciplines. Finally, the group decided to test a solution that consists in issuing only one rule and the corresponding formula related to the case composed of one monofunctional active species bound to one monofunctional support or carrier with note saying that there are more complex systems whose names will be composed of complements based on the same law applied repeatedly. Examples will be provided together with three naming formats: a) IUPAC structure based name; b) IUPAC source based name when applicable; c) IUPAC generic conjugate name. The active
