President’s Report The 2009/10 had some terrific highs both on and off the field.

On the playing front we had a wonderful performance by our Under 17 team who were in the top two

sides for most of the season but slipped at the business end of the season when they were missing a

number of key players. To play finals cricket was a creditable effort and the players, parents and

coaches should be congratulated. The efforts of our whole junior network was outstanding and again

this year the performance has been outstanding.

The Colts had an outstanding year and capped it off with a great premiership. Well done to all the boys

involved and to the skipper Tim Monteleone. The only down side of the win was that the boys got to

burn my much loved Five Finger “toe” shoes.

The Third grade side played good cricket all season and capped it off by beating highly fancied

opponents to win the grand final. A terrific effort by the whole team and a tribute to the strong

leadership of the skipper Luke McShane.

Our First Grade finished outside the finals but only by one game. A couple of disappointing days during

the season cost us badly. The second grade started the season poorly but stormed home to make the

finals. Adam Bolton did an excellent job throughout the season and should be congratulated.

The Fourth Grade had a patchy season. They suffered from having to change captain during the season

and the usual high player rotation. The number of young players blooded should hold us in good stead

for next season.

By the end of the season it was clear that we will have a couple of very significant changes for

2010/2011. Don Weir indicated that he would be moving on after eight seasons. He has been a great

contributor to the Club and we wish him well in his future endeavours. Steve Glew has also indicated he

will not be seeking the captaincy of the First Grade. Another extraordinary contributor to our Club. We

still look forward to Steve’s continued contribution in a different role and still expecting lots of runs

from him.

These changes represent a significant challenge for the players and the Club as a whole. A new

approach and new personnel will be required. It should be taken as an opportunity to establish a new

chapter in a very proud Club history.

Jim Ryan’s efforts in attracting and servicing second eleven cricket at Floreat Oval were again at a high

level and appreciated both by the WACA and the Club. Thanks Jim. To all the other Committee members

and great helpers like the Sansalones and Joanne Bolton my sincere thanks.

Thank you also to our sponsors. We appreciate your support and indeed could not survive without it. I

particularly enjoyed you joining with us for an enjoyable function on the balcony at the Cheek Pavilion

and it was also fabulous that some of you could join us for the end of year function. This is a trend we

must continue into the future.

I look forward to celebrating our great club with you next year as we take on new challenges and

continue to develop both on and off the field.

Coach’s Report

The season past was a frustrating mixture of highs and lows. The highs being the Colts and Third Grade

grand final victories.

The Colt’s grand final win was especially pleasing in that half the side were playing their last Colts game.

The Colts did exactly what they should have done; won the Final. Tim and his side achieved the success

that the talent in the side dictated. Very well done Tim, Tony and the boys.

The 4’s lost too many games from winning positions.

The 3’s consistency as a group was a hallmark for me, thus it was no surprise that their finals campaign

was such a success; congratulations to Macca and the team. Your team ethic was outstanding, your

guts and determination second to none. Fantastic effort boys.

The 2’s would have underachieved had they not made a final but their ordinary application with the bat

in that final was a regrettable low.

The 1’s were inconsistent and most disappointing throughout the season; another low. The season was

a mixed bag performance wise and their final position on the ladder was an indictment to all; this

should not be acceptable; our standards should be set much higher; mediocrity is not in our vocabulary.

Generally many highs but too many lows.

My sincere thanks go to Tony for his tireless efforts in so many areas.

Thank you to Phil. I think we realised how valuable he really is to this Club when he was not available,

top effort Phil.

To Larry and his committee, thank you for your support. I greatly appreciated your efforts. Thank you

to Bolts; we have the only fully functioning scoreboard in the league thanks to you. Kerry as ever,

thanks for always being there. To Joanne a huge thank you, your efforts are outstanding.

Finally, thank you to all the Captains; it was a pleasure to work with you.

To the Club as a whole, it has been my honour to be Coach of this group for the last eight years; our

successes have been many; our enjoyment significant. I wish the Club every success going forward.

Don Weir - Club Coach

Season 2009/10 33rd Annual Report Page 9

1st Grade Report

Following successful season last year, the ‘A’ grade was again well poised to perform well especially

after the committee secured the services of WA all rounder David Bandy and Opening bowler Jason

Behrendorff from Canberra. This wasn’t to be the case as we only managed to finish 9th on the ladder

on the back of significant injuries to a number of our players, even though we only missed the finals by 1

game.

On the playing front there were only 2 players that performed at a higher level than the season before.

Tim Montelone was the stand out performer winning the batting trophy and also took the most wickets

for the season. Dave Bandy was clearly the best bowler for the season winning the bowling award.

Special mention has to go to Jimmy Sansalone who cemented his spot in the ‘A’ Grade by taking 16

wickets at just over 20.

Our challenge next year will be to improve our performances to the same levels of the previous year, to

ensure we are finals contenders again. We definitely have the talent in our squad to ensure future

success if we can play to our potential.

Finally I would like to thank and pass on all our best wishes to Don who has stepped down as coach of

our club on behalf of the ‘A’ Grade side as well as Larry and his committee and support staff, for all their

efforts throughout the season. Special thanks to all our family and supporters for all their efforts

throughout the season.

Steven Glew -1st Grade Captain.

2nd Grade Report

The season for mine provided many highlights of a varying nature. We began the year with a side

consisting of 3 players playing their first second grade game, being Peter Farlie, Andrew Holder and

Simone Willis all of whom played a full year and performed in a manner that belied their relative

inexperience in this particular cricket league. And over the course of the year 3 more players also played

their first game. Added to this in total 16 players with A grade experience played in the 2nd grade

throughout the year and it was this blend of player experience that can help explain our performances

of both a good and not so good nature.

Given this relatively new mix of players within the side we did take a little longer than usual to click as a

team and perform to the level we all expected. Being in a position of 2 wins from seven games going

into round 8 our season was very much on the line and the prospect of heading down to Rocky Bay was

looking even less enticing than usual. However when we left Lark Hill victorious our season was back on

track.

This was the beginning of the last 8 rounds and during this time we knocked off 2 of the top 6 teams

and defeated 2 sides for whom we were competing for a finals spot and won 6 on these matches. But

without question our outright victory in the last round against Willetton at Burrendah to propel the 2nd

grade into the finals capped off a great last half of the season.

Season 2009/10 33rd Annual Report Page 10

2nd Grade Report – continued:

Our bowling this year performed in a manner in which allowed us to be in a position to win a majority if

not all of the games. Given we managed to win only 4 out of 15 coin tosses for the year, we found

ourselves bowling first on a majority of the occasions and no team scored more than 218 against us

since round 8.

During this time Aaron Lilly and Jim Sansalone were rewarded with A grade positions for their

performances not only this year but in the previous years with the ball, both taking 20 wickets at the

half way point in the year.

Our bowling strength was further underpinned by Chris Baker taking 28 polls from his 12 games and

Simone Heyting taking 38 wickets for the year from 14 matches to be the second leading wicket taker in

the competition and almost bowling us to victory by taking the first 6 wickets against South Perth in

round 12. Part of this dominance from our pace attack was due to the performance of Simon Willis who

took 21 wickets for the year, and in our elimination final produced a typical Simo performance bowling

19 overs with 14 maidens and taking 1 for 16.

Our batting was a little less consistent, with no centuries scored, however it was nothing if not

entertaining. Innings' of the calibre of Wes Ripper's 89 in round 1, Vinnie Sandhu's 80 in an hour down

in Freo in round 14 and Stef Collins's 90 made at Burrendah in round 15 were few in number but were

match winning performances in themselves. All of these guys also were rewarded with promotion into A

grade at various stages during the year.

Having made the finals on the back of some exceptional cricket the feeling of losing the elimination final

to eventual premiers in Bayswater Morley was nothing if not hollow. It did however provide a number

of our players a taste of finals cricket and the level at which we need to aspire to. Given how hard out

team worked to scrap into the finals it did provided further appreciation and respect for what Monty

and Macca managed to achieve with the colts boys and the 3rd grade in regards to the level of cricket

that was played by these teams throughout the year to win their respective premierships

As always I would like to thank a few people who made this year what it was. To the guys that stood

next to me in the lounge, Sarge, Wasti, Vinnie, Pez, Pro etc I am very much appreciative of the help and

assistance you guys gave me personally with the captaincy this year. Tony Cranstoun provided a level of

support that I can't explain, and given my ability to forget the essentials required to begin a game of

cricket, cricket balls, team sheets, coins etc Tony saved us on more than one occasion. Again I would like

to thank Larry and the committee for giving me this opportunity and providing an environment in which

we as players can all enjoy our cricket.

Lastly I would like to pass on my thanks to Don as club coach over the years and to Glewy as the

departing A grade skipper. These guys were around when I first got to play A grade cricket and I thank

them for giving me that opportunity but also for being the leaders of our clubs on field success in the

past years.

Thank you.

Adam Bolton – 2nd Grade Captain

Season 2009/10 33rd Annual Report Page 11

3rd Grade Report

The 2009-10 season was certainly one to remember for the SFCC 3rd grade side.

After 2 games we were 1 win and 1 draw. We then won our next 4 games against Perth, Scarborough,

Bayswater and Claremont. This really got our season going as a number of those teams have fielded

strong 3rd grade sides over a number of years. We finished the home and away season in second place

with 9 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Bayswater-Morley finished on top, with their only loss coming against

the Subi Lions in Round 5.

Our first final saw us meet Midland-Guilford at Alderbury St. We were sent in and despite being 4-57 at

one stage managed to compile an impressive 312. A tough ask at Alderbury St and it proved too much

for a Midland team who were just not all there – literally. Midland all out 157.

Fremantle were next. It was an eagerly anticipated clash following a spiteful home and away fixture a

few weeks earlier. They also sent us in and we got 324. I was fast learning that batting first in finals is

really important. Fremantle all out 160.

The final saw us meet Bayswater-Morley. I finally won a toss and, after much deliberation, elected to

bat. We got 347. With a top score of 59 it really was a team effort. With Bayswater the higher ranked

side, we still needed to take 10 wickets on the Sunday. After slumping to 6-126, they shut up shop and

played for a draw. Trapping the final 4 bears on a flat wicket proved difficult and the game went into the

final hour. However the second new ball caused some problems and we trapped our final bear in the

88th over. GM Dixon – LBW T Moscarda. Bayswater all out 232. Mayhem!

I would fill you in on the next fortnight but can’t for the life of me remember any of it. Things got cavey

back at the Cheek.

Some returning old faces this year saw our side nicknamed ‘Old Mates XI’. With the average age a tick

over 28 it wasn’t without its dues. In any event, this was a tight knit group and like none I had played

with before. Everyone wanted this a lot and it showed in our cricket. The focus was always on the group

not the individual. My thanks go to all players who played third grade in 2009-10. Thank you for your

support.

My sincere thanks go to departing coach Don Weir who helped us enormously throughout the season.

He was a terrific supporter of ours and I wish him all the best. Thank you to the cricket club for giving

me the opportunity to captain the side. I am very proud to have led this group of guys and we are

delighted to be able to present the club with a grade premiership.

Luke McShane – 3rd grade captain.

Season 2009/10 33rd Annual Report Page 12

4th Grade Report

The 2009/2010 4th grade season involved a total of 37 players representing the side from the age of 14

to 47 years with myself and John Stoykovski sharing the captaincy. Mixed results eventuated due to

injuries in the higher grades depleting the 4th grade side.

That being said the team was competitive beating last years premiers Joondalup in a last ball thriller,

Mount Lawley who made the six, a near outright victory against Claremont Nedlands (one wicket short)

and a thumping of Midland Guildford by 8 wickets in a one day fixture. The draw against Perth was

encouraging although the time lost by rain resulted in a meaningless draw.

The Subi 4’s were outplayed in two games, the first vs. Wanneroo and the second the 4’s nemesis

Bayswater Morley. All other games we were in winning positions our weakness this summer was our

batting. Not enough partnerships were built and wickets fell in clumps. Our bowling and fielding on the

other hand kept us in the hunt many times defending a small target.

The junior talent this season was impressive and the club needs to keep all these players at the club to

ensure its success in the future. Players such as (not in order): Emerson Walker, Joe Galati, Nick Syme,

Ben Moseley, Mitchell Debarro, Ben O’Regan and Calum How all have the talent I believe to play A-

grade one day in the near future. The hunger has to be drilled into these boys!

James Birchall was a great pick up for the club and he won the bowling award and was unplayable at 4 th

grade level. If I had a dollar for every play and miss Big Jim bowled, it was frustrating for us. Gianni

Di Rosso won the batting and although happy, he would have been happier had someone else won it

(he only played 8 games in the 4’s).

All in all a moderate season but given the player turnover (37) it wasn’t easy to build a team which was

constantly changing and two captains didn’t add any stability either. I look forward to 2010/2011 which

will be on us before we know it. New Season, coach, players should build a strong future for the

Subiaco/Floreat Lions.

Gianni Di Rosso - 4th Grade Captain

Colts Report

For a number of years now, the Subiaco-Floreat Cricket Club has been blessed with a strong group of

junior cricketers, which, given the restricted zone base we have to choose from, is a credit to the club.

The young talent pool on offer has always allowed our colts sides to be extremely competitive in the

one-day Colts competition. Season 2009/2010 was no exception.

I have been lucky enough to lead the Colts side since the 2007/2008. In each of these seasons, I could

confidently say that we had a side that could win the colts flag. However most will know that it only

takes one slip-up in a finals series and it’s all over. Anyone who has played colts for Subi-Floreat over the

last ten years will probably understand this feeling.

Season 2009/10 33rd Annual Report Page 13

Colts Report – continued:

I honestly feel that it takes the disappointments of losing to realise exactly what it takes to have success.

Many of the playing group this year played in our semi-final defeat last season. The look in some of the

boys eyes at the start of this season assured me that we were going to make a mends for falling short

the year before. This desire to succeed, coupled with the fact

that it was for many of us this was our last season of colts cricket, ensured that mentally we wanted this

flag more than any other side.

The beauty of our group was that when we played well, we played as a team. And when we played well,

we would more often than not win the game. However there were a few individual defining moments

throughout the season.

The importance of James Sansalone’s cameo match-winning performance with the bat in the first game

at Joondalup was not fully realised until after the game. Jimmy’s 26 not out off nowhere near as many

balls saw us chase down 202 with one ball to spare and one wicket in hand. His innings and the win was

made so much sweeter when we were made aware after the match that only the top side from each

group would go through to the finals this year. Our season could almost have been over after round 1!

I was really impressed with the efforts of AJ Murphy this season. Although it is what we have come to

expect of such a talented player, his contributions with the bat AND the ball played a huge role in the

success of the side. His fantastic 10 over spell of deadly accurate slow-medium pace bowling in the semi

final against Perth and Claremont-Nedlands in the final, as well as his gutsy hundred in the same game

were some of his most memorable match-winning performances.

One of my favourite moments throughout the season came in the Final. We were in the field after

making a fairly modest 201. With Claremont-Nedlands cruising at 3/110, we were staring down the

barrel of a grand final defeat. Against the run of play, we made a breakthrough to end the main 74-run

partnership. I’ll never forget the celebrations after that wicket. Every player in the side had that belief

that we wanted this more than anyone. Looking back on the game after winning the Grand Final, I felt

that it was such a great team moment.

Some thankyous must go to Don Weir and Tony Cranstoun, who gave up their Sundays throughout the

year as well as their time at training to ensure the colts were the best prepared side in the competition.

I would also like to extend my congratulations to Don on the work he has done for this cricket club over

a number of years. I wish him all the very best in his future pursuits.

To Dom and Sue Sansalone, the work you both do to ensure that the boys are looked after all

throughout the day on the weekends really does lift the spirits of the players and we are very grateful

and appreciative of your efforts. It will be a long winter without some Sansalone cuisine!

Finally to the boys. To Jimmy, Kimba, Murph, Pez, Lilsa, who are joining me in retirement, I have

seriously enjoyed our time together both on and off the field during our colts days. I could not think of a

better group of lads to play with and I will miss the great times we have had together. To the boys that

remain, all I can say is make the most of your time playing colts cricket. They are some of the best times

I can remember and playing cricket with your mates will not happen forever.

Cheers Boys, It’s been an absolute pleasure.

Under 17’s Report

When assessing the success or otherwise of a junior season one must first consider the objectives at the

start. With this in mind our major focuses back in August 2009 were:

To provide a structured program

To improve discipline within the group

To ensure our graduating players were prepared for their introduction to seniors by

season’s end.

I am confident that we have succeeded on all accounts and, as a bonus, we also achieved considerable

on- field success, securing victory in 8 from 12 games and playing finals cricket for the first time in a

number of years. As a means of attending to our objectives, we necessarily asked a good deal more

from our players, introducing separate net and fielding sessions and post game recovery swimming

sessions on Sunday mornings at Claremont Pool. Our young players adapted very quickly and their

enthusiasm to the program virtually assured our season results.

Special mention should be made of our inspirational skipper Mitch DeBarro, who not only led the team

with great poise, but also provided many outstanding individual performances that set his team on

course to many wins. Ben O’Regan also performed outstandingly well when available and is to be

congratulated on representing the state in the title winning WA Under 18’s. Many of our boys also

made regular appearances in senior grades and all made valuable contributions.

As always, there are many people to thank for their assistance and often understated efforts:

Tim Monteleone and Anthony Murphy, both outstanding young men who gave up their extremely

limited spare time to assist with coaching the boys and their expertise has been so valuable in the

development of the players. Both mixed 1st Grade and University commitments with coaching and I

cannot stress how grateful we are as a group and as a club.

Jeff Flint, unflappable and always ready to do whatever is required in the often thankless task of

Manager. Many thanks Jeffrey, your efforts were very much appreciated.

Russ Mathanda, our strength and conditioning guru who gave up his time to help and guide the boys

especially in the important area of core strength and I know the boys learnt a great deal from his

expertise.

Richard and Erin DeBarro, always available to help the boys and ready to provide a shoulder, a coffee, a

beer or words of encouragement for me. Great people and great help all season.

Jen Rippey and all the parents who helped with morning teas and for their patience and understanding

with all the requirements placed on the boys.

In summary, a very successful season and hopefully, one that sees these young men go on to long and

fruitful careers at Subi- Floreat.

Under 15’s Report

Wow the season is over and it seems like a lot of the boys were just getting started. Cricket is a hard

game to get the opportunities you would always like and the results you sometimes deserve. The team

was hit during the year with player injuries and the demands of PSA and this resulted in our 15’s giving

opportunities to a lot of boys.

Highlights for the year included some great 50’s by Alex Bell, Gwyn Nielsen, Ryan Walker, Ryan

Williamson and a 100 by Jason Kessel. Our fielding continued to improve and our bowling stepped up

with the increased pace of the game.

Outstanding leadership was shown by Quinn Lee-Jones during the year and the maturity with which he

conducted himself and the selfless way he played for the team resulted in him winning the Coaches

Award for the year. Alex Bell received the batting award and the bowling award went to Jason Kessel.

Well done on significant improvements to:

Nick Stillman on his spin bowling

Matt Geldard-Ker showing some form with both bat and ball

Shaun Flack with some good slow bowling and batting at the top of the innings

Will Roe on tight bowling and solid batting

Apologies to Kim for again bearing the brunt of my frustrations during the year.

A big plus for the boys was the involvement of Stefan Collins at our training. Stef is an outstanding

young man who played in our juniors only a couple of years ago and was prepared to commit a

significant amount of time and effort to assist the 15’s whist trying to establish himself as a 1st Grade

cricketer. Thanks Stef and I know one of the highlights for the boys was working with you during the

season.

My objective to assess whether the boys continue to move in the right direction is if:

They have improved their technical skills;

They have developed their mental application for the game including their maturity to deal with success

and failure with equal measure; and

That their passion still burns bright for the game at the end of the year.

I believe these objectives were achieved and commend all squad members including the Under 14s

squad members who played for the 15s in the last few rounds.

Many thanks to Greg Bell as the Assistant Coach, Jane as the Manager and to all of the parents who

chipped in and helped out during the year. Thanks also to the SFCC Committee for their continued

support and involvement with the SFCC Junior teams.

I wish all of the boys well with their future cricket and hope to see you all back at SFCC soon.

Under 14’s Report (McKenzie Shield)

If we measure our success for the season by the number of games won (two from seven) and our final

position on the ladder it would be fair to say from afar that our results were a little disappointing.

If however we measure our achievement for the season by:

having seven new players join the club and experience district cricket for the first time;

creating an opportunity for fifteen young aspiring cricketers to test their skills against the

highest quality opposition;

displaying a high level of competitiveness in all contests which on most occasions went

down to the wire;

sharing the thrill of winning a game of cricket on the second last ball of the match;

experiencing the bonding and friendships developed amongst the boys which will put

them in good stead for seasons to come;

…… then I think the season was a tremendous success.

As always there are many people to thank, not least assistant coach Tony Murphy, particularly for his

wise counsel, and our team manager Deborah Clifton who ensured all we needed to do was turn up.

Finally a very big thank you to Glyn and Jane O’Brien for their tremendous contribution which provides

these opportunities for the club’s juniors.

Paul Newman – U14s Coach

Under 13’s Report (Inverarity Shield)

After selecting 19 boys from more than 40 who trialed we got off to a slow start .There is a big leap from

community cricket and Bayswater Morley had the advantage of a few seasoned batsmen who enjoyed

the line and length of our young players in October. We conceded our largest total (3/207) and only

managed 8/124 in reply. The batting was solid with Ben Bartley (26) top scoring. History notes that

Inverarity Shield games tend to be won by restricting other teams with tight bowling and after this game

the team proved to be quick learners and tightened up considerably.

Against Wanneroo the bowlers were much improved but we still struggled to get an early breakthrough.

Their total of 5/132 was in our range –with the back bone of our attack Nick Marsh ,Cameron Green ,

Ben Massey and Bailey Rogers all doing well. Liam Kessel who scored the most runs for the year scored

26 and Captain Matt Blake kept us in the game with a well made 32 but we fell 13 runs short of a

winning total.

Our first home game at Alderbury St was against traditional rivals Scarborough. Batting first at this

level is definitely an advantage and for the first time this season we did. Michael Ninkov (28) and

Hamish Donovan (17) had a partnership of 39 for the first wicket wish set up the whole innings.

The wide open spaces of Alderbury St are a bit daunting for 12 year olds but they kept the score moving

along. Matt Blake and Ben Bartley had a partnership of 41 at the end and a quick 20 from Josh Richards

gave us a competitive 7/144.

Season 2009/10 33rd Annual Report Page 17

U13s Report – continued:

Ben Massey and Cameron Green each took 2 wickets restricting Scarborough to 7/126 but Josh

Richards’ 0/24 from 8 overs kept the pressure on .The boys were starting to gain confidence in their

ability and the fielding was excellent resulting in their first win.

The pre Christmas fixture was against Centurions and batting first we struggled to score. Liam Kessel

(30) was the only batsman to look fluent against very good bowling. Michael Ninkov opened and held up

one end but 8/118 was not enough. Tight bowling from James Gibson and Bailey Rogers kept the

pressure on and a 4 wicket haul from Ben Massey gave us a chance.2/20 from Josh Richards (another

tight 8 overs) set up a nail biting finish. Add a five run penalty for over officious umpiring (running on

the wicket) and we won by one run.

Australia Day weekend was spent out at Lilac Hill against the undefeated Midland Guildford .Batting

first again suited us until we were 3/5.An innings saving partnership between Liam Kessel and Tom

Gajewski settled us down. Tom’s innings of 47 was the best of the season and showed great maturity

under pressure and will be a sign of the future. Ryan Crisp (18) featured in 2 good partnerships and we

battled to 8/126. MG had a steady start to reach 2/70 but everybody bowled exceptionally to frustrate

their batsmen resulting in a collapse. It was not enough to win but to restrict them to 136 was a

fabulous effort –they reached the Inverarity Shield final.

We were privileged to be able to play Mt Lawley at Floreat Oval-another strong team with finals

aspirations. Again batting first the extra bounce and fast outfield made a nice change in conditions.

Ninkov (42) and Kessel (45) enjoying themselves in an 82 run partnership in good time. A bit of hitting

by the middle order got us to our highest score of the summer -6/152. The usual suspects bowled well

with the new ball and ML were well behind the run rate with the final 10 overs to be bowled. Hamish

Mackenzie bamboozled their batsmen and our keeper with his Chinamen and was unlucky not to take a

wicket .Josh Richards saved the day with a fantastic catch and great off spin bowling at the “death” –he

is the player who always wants to be in the action –even when we could lose. There was a lot of space

on the field that afternoon and the pressure from all showed how far we had come in a few short

months. The enthusiasm was fantastic and the boys were well rewarded by keeping ML to 7/145.

Our last game was against Joondalup at Iluka on what was a green and two paced pitch-testing

environment for boys this age. Matt Blake won another toss and batted in a gentle 60 knot breeze. We

struggled to 8/113 with Ryan Crisp (24) and Liam Kessel (27) keeping us on track. Jacob Marsh held up

the tail ensuring we batted the 40 overs. Joondalup only made 95 – Bailey Rogers bowled his best spell

of swing bowling for the season – batsmen and slips not coping with the movement – Nick Marsh (2/15)

battled into the breeze and the spin twins of Jacob Marsh and Josh Richards were too good for their

middle order. But just as Joondalup looked like scoring an unlikely win Cameron Green chimed in with a

match winning 4/9.A good result leaving us in 4th place overall.

I would like to thank assistant coach Gary Green and wish him luck with the 13’s next season. Also we

are the best organized cricket team in WA with Glenys Walsh ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

Thanks to all the parents who do all the work behind the scenes as well as scoring and never ending

support for the boys – especially the afternoon tea - the best part of the game - or so I’m told.

It has been a pleasure to coach this group of boys and hope everyone continues to enjoy their cricket

into the future.

SUBIACO FLOREAT CRICKET CLUB (Inc)

Season 2009/10 33rd Annual Report Page 32

Club History

The Subiaco Cricket Club was admitted to the Western Australian Cricket Association in 1907 and was

formed from the remnants of a mercantile cricket club based at Whittaker's timber mill in Subiaco. The

Club played originally at Subiaco Oval before re-locating to Rosalie Park in the 1960’s. Some of the

better-known Subiaco players were Johnny Rutherford, Jim Hubble, Des Hoare and former Prime

Minister Bob Hawke.

The Floreat Park Cricket Club was founded in 1956 and admitted to the Western Australian Cricket

Association as a 2nd Grade Club. The most famous players to be produced by the Floreat Park Club

were Australian Test players Kim Hughes and Terry Alderman who both went to the Subiaco Club to play

1st grade cricket before returning to Floreat Oval when the two clubs merged.

The Subiaco-Floreat Cricket Club was founded in 1977 as a result of the amalgamation between the

Subiaco Cricket Club and the Floreat Park Cricket Club and commenced playing in the 1977/78 season.

Ray Young was the inaugural President and Paul Nicholls the inaugural 1st Grade Captain.

Since the amalgamation the Club has produced from within its own ranks, many 1st class

representatives including Glenn Hughes, Giles Bush, Todd Breman, Gavin Swan, Michael Clark, Steven

Glew and Murray Goodwin.

In season 2000/01, the Club won the Club Championship by a margin of 300 points. This was the largest

winning margin on record. In 2001/02, the Club became the first club since 1982/83 to win successive

1st Grade Premierships, the first club since 1986/87 to win successive Club Championships and the only

club in the history of the WACA competition to win successive 1st Grade Premierships and Club

Championships and at the same time.

In season 2002/03 the Club won a third successive 1st Grade Premiership. This was only the third time

in WACA history that a club has won three successive 1st Grade Premiership; the previous occurrence

was back in 1924/25. In 2004/05, the club won the Sunday League one-day competition for the first

time since it began in 1978/79.

In 2005/06, the club had a distinguished season, being the only club with all four grades making the

semi-finals and, in what is probably a national first, all four captains losing the toss on rain-affected

wickets (Richie Benaud would receive a frosty welcome if he was to repeat the quote below). The club

was also the runner-up in the club championship and we were semi-finalists in both the Sunday League

and Colts competitions, whilst our Juniors took the flag in the U/17 competition.

In addition, the umpires awarded champion bowler Sam Howman the prestigious Olly Cooley Medal as

fairest and best in the WACA competition and awarded the club the Lords Taverners’ Spririt of Cricket

Award on the basis of points for each match in every grade throughout the season. Previous Subiaco-

Floreat Olly Cooley medallists since it was first awarded in 1976-77 have been Kevin Sharp, who won it

in 1980-81, and Brian 'Big Bird' Raven, who won it in 1989-90.

Also in 2005/06, Chris Hansberry was awarded the 2005/06 WA Media Guild prize as State U/19

Cricketer of the Year and Adam Bolton was awarded the JP Robbins Medal as the Second Grade

Cricketer of the Year, determined by umpires’ votes in a similar manner to the Olly Cooley medal. In the

Juniors, Tim Monteleone took the WACA Junior Cricketer of the Year Award and Jimmy Sansalone won

the WACA U/17’s Cricketer of the Year and WACA bowling aggregate and averages trophies.
