SUBJECT CORRESPONDENCE SERIES, 1924-1983,69 cu. ft. ,128 boxes, folders 1-1232, 3 boxes of index cards, 1 oversize folder
Overall, the Subject Correspondence Series is arranged in alphabetical order by
folder title. Within folders, material is arranged in chronological order. It has
several subseries distinguished by an internal alphabetical filing system, A-Z,
separate from the overall series filing. These subseries are distinguished by the
subseries name in bold face. Of particular note are the extensive files related to
Camp's work with the United States Chamber of Commerce. Other subseries
include: Associated Farmers, Awards, Cotton, and Whittier College. There are
several cases where the alphabetical file order has become lost as older filing systems
were merged into the main files. Of particular note is the section at the end of this
series (boxes 126-128) which is a continuation of the "C" subject files including most
of the material related to Clemson. The material in this series consists of copies of
memos and correspondence to and from Camp, agendas, articles, brochures,
clippings, invitations, lists, maps, minutes, newsletters, postcards, reports,
schedules, statements, and telegrams. A variety of near print material related to
organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce can be found in some of the
folders. There are three boxes of index cards which list correspondents and subjects
found in this series. The index is comprehensive although there are a few
disparities with items either not listed or no longer in the collection.
The contents of the series relate Camp's activities as a businessman and
spokesman for agriculture such as his work on the National Potato Council. They
also document a wide variety of issues related to agriculture such as efforts to
unionize farm laborers, farm allotment and price controls, right-to-work laws, water
policy in the West, and improvements in cotton and potato crops. In addition to
documenting Camp's support of a number of organizations the series documents
his support a number of candidates such as Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon.
