A subject pronoun tells who is the subject of the sentence.

You use tú when talking to friends or people who you are on a FIRST NAME basis with.

You use tú when you talk to each other, your friends or casual people.

Usted refers to only one person.

Usted is abbreviated as Ud.

Ustedes refers to more than one person. Can be a formal and informal person.

Ustedes is abbreviated as Uds.

Vosotros and VosotrasVosotros and Vosotras

These are plural and familiar ways of saying you to a group. These are not used everywhere only in Spain.

In Spain a teacher would refer to her students as “Vosotros” instead of “ustedes”. In Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries there isn’t a difference between the plural you. Ustedes is used in both situations.

In Spanish a verb can tell the subject of the sentence all by itself! This happens when you conjugate the verb.

However, it is often times necessary to use a subject pronoun to help clarify the conjugation of the verb.
