  • SUBMISSIONS FOR TALES OF CUTTLEFISH JOE.

The WHYALLA WRITERS GROUP invites submissions for stories and illustrations for future editions of the TALES OF CUTTLEFISH JOE series.

Hopefully you will already be familiar with the format and layout of the books. Each book contains twenty pages of content, and our preference is to publish two submissions (stories) each of ten pages for each edition, although shorter or longer stories are acceptable as long as the required twenty pages of content can be met. We may also publish a single story of twenty pages.

Preference will be given to stories featuring the wildlife of the Whyalla and Upper Spencer Gulf area. All finished stories will be a combination of art and text, but dont worry if you are only submitting text as we can suggest possible illustrators suitable for your story. Even if you have an illustrator in mind,

or can do this work yourself, it would be advisable not to do too much artistic work towards your story before the story is accepted and a page length finalized.

Initially, please approach the WWG with your proposal. The format we employ encourages the participation of several people (writers, photographers, illustrators etc) in each story. It would be best to initially submit the text, split into the number of pages you think you might need to tell the story. If possible try to have a similar word-count on each page. It would be helpful if you have in mind an age-range for readers of your story.

Once the text and number of pages is agreed on, the next stage is to produce a storyboard. This is a rough version of the layout of each page.

There are several ways of presenting your story. In our first book we used photographs for the backgrounds of each page with the characters superimposed over them (generally using two panels on each page with text beneath each photograph.). We are open to other types of layout.

When your story is accepted for publication you will be given an agreement to sign. A sample agreement is attached to this document. Separate documents must be signed by all parties if more than one person is involved in the production of your story.

With the text agreed on, your illustrator can now begin work on the drawings. They might produce full-page drawings or a number of individual panels, depending on the story. The finished size of each page is about 17x22cm. Illustrators should ideally present their work to us as a number of individually completed pages. We can accept original drawings on paper or suitable computer scans. It is recommended that the illustrator speak to the editor of the book prior to commencing work to confirm the acceptability of the method they are

  • proposing to use. We prefer illustrations at the finished page size. Large drawings (A3 size and above) will require scanning or reduction by other means and this may involve extra expense. At this point, the WWG has no contingency for such costs.

Illustrations will also be presented without text. The text will be added to the book after the illustrations are in place. The storyboard will be followed as to the placement of the illustrations and text on each page. It may be necessary however to slightly alter the wording should the number of words prove too many for placement on a particular page, but the author will be consulted as to any changes and given an opportunity to see the final result before the book is printed.

It should be pointed out that sometimes the text might need to be adjusted once the words and pictures come together for the first time. Often what is written is made redundant by the illustrations. (For example

a caption might say: Fifteen seagulls flew in formation over the lighthouse. But the illustrator might have only had room to draw ten seagulls. If the number of seagulls is not relevant to the story then the caption might be changed to: A gaggle of seagulls flew over the lighthouse, without compromising the story.)

A separate set of illustrations without text should be kept on file as sometimes it is necessary to return to the original drawings if changes need to be made.

At this stage it is proposed that the design for the cover of each book will be identical, except for a change in background colour and the names of the various writers/illustrators etc. Copyright will be held by the various contributors as outlined in the publishing agreement. Your active involvement in the promotion, distribution and sale of the book would be appreciated.
