InstallationSafetyPerm-A-Barrier products must be handled prop-erly. Vapors from the mastic and solvent-basedprimer are harmful and flammable. For these prod-ucts, the best available information on safehandling, storage, personal protection, health andenvironmental considerations has been gathered.Refer to product label and Material Safety DataSheet before use. All users should acquaint them-selves with this information prior to working withthe material. Carefully read detailed precautionstatements on the product labels and MSDS beforeuse. MSDSs can be obtained from our web site atwww.graceconstruction.com or by contacting ustoll free at 866-333-3SBM (3726).Preparatory WorkApply Perm-A-Barrier Wall Flashing and acces-sories only in fair weather when air and surfacetemperatures are above 25°F (-4°C).Wherever wall flashing is to be applied, thesurface must be smooth, clean, dry and free ofvoids, spalled areas, loose substrate, loose nails,sharp protrusions or other matter that will hinderthe adhesion or uniformity of the wall flashinginstallation. Clean loose dust or dirt from thesurface by wiping with a clean dry cloth or abrush.Conditioning and PrimingUse Perm-A-Barrier WB Primer to enhance adhe-sion on dusty cementitious substrates.Perm-A-Barrier WB Primer is a water-basedprimer which imparts an aggressive, high tackfinish on the treated substrate. It is specificallydesigned to facilitate tenacious adhesion of Perm-A-Barrier Wall Flashing, Perm-A-Barrier WallMembrane, Grace underlayments and GraceVycor® Self-Adhered Flashings to varioussubstrates including DensGlass Gold® (refer torelevant product data sheets). It will cover approx-imately 250–350 ft2/gal (6–8 m2/L) when appliedwith a roller. A synthetic, 1⁄2 in. (13 mm) nap rollerhas been found to be very successful. A moder-ately thick coating should be applied and rolledout evenly. A properly applied coating will haveuniform coverage and leave a tacky finish to thesurface when dry.

Apply primer in dry weather with ambient andsubstrate temperatures above 25°F (-4°C). Surfacemust be dry and clean, free from frost, dirt, grease,oil or other contaminants. Failure to removeexcessive dust may result in compromised adhe-sion of the membrane. Allow primer to drycompletely before application of the flashing.In cooler or humid conditions, priming may bedone in advance. If primed surface is exposed formore than 7 days, or if significant dust or dirtaccumulates on the surface, re-prime with a thincoat of Perm-A-Barrier WB Primer.The drying time could vary from 15 minutes(<90°F (>32°C), windy, under the sun) to 3 hours(cold and no wind), depending on the weathercondition. For 90°F (32°C) or greater, 45 minutesto one hour; 50°F (10°C) to 90°F (32°C),1–3 hours; less than 50°F (10°C) 3 hours or more.Bituthene Primer B2 is used to prime greenconcrete or damp substrates. Apply to cleansurface at a coverage rate of 250–350 ft2/gal(6–8 m2/L). Allow primer to dry completely(approximately 1 hour dependent on weathercondition) before application of wall flashing.Flashing ApplicationPre-cut Perm-A-Barrier Wall Flashing to easilyhandled lengths. Peel release paper from roll toexpose rubberized asphalt and carefully positionflashing against substrate. Ripcord, a Split Releaseon Demand feature embedded in the membrane,also makes Perm-A-Barrier Wall Flashing easy toposition in detailed areas. Press firmly into placewith a steel hand roller or the back of a utilityknife as soon as possible, fully adhering the flash-ing to the substrate to prevent water frommigrating under the Perm-A-Barrier Wall Flash-ing. Form end dams at horizontal flashingterminations to prevent water entry. Overlap adja-cent pieces 2 in. (51 mm) and roll overlap with asteel hand roller.Apply a bead of Bituthene Mastic along all laps,seams, top edges, cuts and penetrations and trowelinto place. Lay or trim edges of Perm-A-BarrierWall Flashing 1⁄2 in. (13 mm) back from the faceof the masonry. No reglet is necessary wheninstalling Perm-A-Barrier Wall Flashing to verticalsurfaces. Complete installation instructions anddetails are available upon request.If wrinkles develop, carefully cut out affected areaand replace in similar procedure outlined above.The repair piece must be pressed into place with ahand roller as soon as possible to ensure continu-ous and intimate contact with the substrate.ProtectionPerm-A-Barrier Wall Flashing must be protectedfrom damage from other trades or constructionmaterials.

Storage and Handling InformationAll materials must be protected from rain andphysical damage. Pallets of Perm-A-Barrier WallFlashing must not be double stacked on the jobsite. Provide cover on top and all sides, allowingfor adequate ventilation. Store wall flashing wheretemperatures will not exceed 90°F (32°C) forextended periods. All products must be stored in adry area away from high heat, flames or sparks.At point of use, store only as much material as isrequired for each day’s work.

Emergency Overview: Warning! Eye contact with rubberized asphalt residue on hands can cause irritation. Skin contact with rubberized asphalt can cause irritation. May be harmful if ingested. May be harmful if absorbed through skin. May cause teratogenic effects. May produce local skin tumors. Removal of release liner may generate a static electrical discharge (spark). Release liners are slippery. Remove from work area immediately.

Potential Health Effects:

Inhalation: Due to the physical nature of this product, inhalation is unlikely. If heated, inhalation of vapor causes irritation, sore throat, coughing and breathing difficulty. Effects include: Nausea, headache, dizziness and irritation. Eye Contact: Eye contact with rubberized asphalt residue on hands can cause irritation Skin Contact: Skin contact causes irritation. Prolonged skin contact can result in dermatitis. Contact with petroleum oils in this product, may produce serious toxic effects including skin cancer, liver damage, blood effects and effects on the unborn based on tests with laboratory animals. Animal tests indicate that prolonged and repeated skin contact to the oils in this product may produce local skin tumors. Individuals with pre-existing skin disorders may be at increased risk for worsening their condition from exposure to this product.

Skin Absorption: Product can be absorbed through the skin upon prolonged contact resulting in systemic effects such as nausea, headache, and general discomfort. Ingestion: Due to the physical nature of this product, ingestion is unlikely. If ingested, causes burns to the linings of the mouth, esophagus and stomach. Effects include: Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Wash hands before eating.

SECTION 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES: Skin Contact: In case of skin contact, clean fingernails and wash skin with soap and water. If residue remains, clean with waterless hand-cream or abrasive soap. Never use solvents. If discomfort or irritation persists, consult a physician. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Eye Contact: Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelids open. Get immediate medical attention. Ingestion: If swallowed, contact a physician immediately. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. The decision to induce vomiting should only be made by a physician. Inhalation: If symptoms develop, get fresh air. If symptoms persist, consult a physician. If breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration then oxygen if needed.

Incidental ingestion of residue on hands can be avoided by using good personal hygiene practices. This product contains compounds subject to exposure guidelines and/or identified as carcinogens. ACGIH TLV: The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists established Threshold Limit Values for the substances potentially present as components of concrete masonry dust for 8-hour time-weighted average exposures. The ACGIH TLVs are exposure standards recommended as a matter of good safety and health practice.

NIOSH REL: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Recommended

Exposure Limits established standard maximum permissible concentrations as determined by a full-shift sample up to a 10-hour work day, 40-hour work week.

Note: The addition of Flyash and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag cement may introduce trace metal contaminants. Exclusive use of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag Cements in a typical concrete or masonry product mixture may add metallic oxides of Aluminum and Calcium in excess of the 1% hazard ingredient reporting threshold by OSHA. It should be noted that some states have State operated OSHA programs with exposure standards that may be more stringent than the Federal OSHA PELs reported. oxygen that should produce no significant hazard under normal operating conditions. Under extreme conditions in an enclosed environment, it could possibly produce an oxygen deficient environment unsuitable for continuous human occupancy. In an enclosed environment, adequate fresh air should be provided and suitable atmospheric testing should be conducted to verify the oxygen content is suitable.

Inhalation is the primary route of entry for substances present in concrete masonry products.

Wet concrete products may cause irritation of the skin after direct skin contact due to the alkaline nature of components blended into the wet concrete slurry. Trace amounts of hexavalent chromium have also been associated with chromate sensitive contact dermatitis in workers exposed to wet cement or concrete. Dry concrete dusts are unlikely to produce skin irritation under expected conditions of exposure; however, if skin irritation is experienced, efforts should be made to prevent skin contact using good hygiene and protective equipment practices. Handling finished concrete masonry products can be abrasive to the skin.

Ingestion is an unlikely route of entry in most occupational settings.

Health Hazards (Acute and Chronic): Under normal conditions of handling and use, dust exposures from concrete masonry products should be minimal. Finishing processes such as sanding or cutting may release dusts containing respirable crystalline silica. Prolonged exposure to dusts containing respirable crystalline silica may cause delayed (chronic) lung injury (silicosis). Acute or rapidly developing silicosis may occur in a short period of time after heavy exposure. Silicosis is a form of disabling pulmonary fibrosis, which can be progressive and may lead to death. Bronchitis and tuberculosis are also diseases associated with inhalation of dusts containing respirable silica. Some studies indicate an association with lung cancer from exposure to silica. Carcinogenicity: Finished concrete masonry products are not considered to be carcinogenic. Concrete dusts created by mechanical finishing processes such as sawing and sanding may contain concentrations of respirable crystalline silica-quartz with carcinogenic classifications by the organizations listed below: NTP: Yes

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) published its Eleventh Annual Report on Carcinogens which concludes that “silica, crystalline (respirable)” is known to be a human carcinogen. The NTP conclusion is based on sufficient evidence for the carcinogenicty of respirable crystalline silica from studies in humans indicates a causal relationship between exposure and increasing lung cancer rates in workers exposed to crystalline silica was reviewed in IARC, 1997; Brown et. al., Horizdot, et. al., 1997

IARC Monographs? Yes IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risk of Chemicals to Humans (volume 68, 1997) concludes that there is sufficient evidence for the carcinogenicity of crystalline silica to experimental animals, and that there is limited evidence of the carcinogenicity of crystalline silica to humans. IARC Group 1 Carcinogenic to humans.

Signs and Symptoms of Exposure: Shortness of breath following physical exertion, severe cough, fatigue, loss of appetite, chest pains and fever. (Source NIOSH/DOL Factsheet – “Preventing Silicosis”)

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing lung diseases such as emphysema or asthma: Pulmonary function may be reduced by inhalation of respirable crystalline silica. Also lung scarring produced by such inhalation may lead to a progressive massive fibrosis of the lung which may aggravate other pulmonary conditions and diseases and which increases susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis. Progressive massive fibrosis may be accompanied by right heart enlargement, heart failure, and pulmonary failure. Smoking may aggravate the effects of exposure.

Emergency and First Aid Procedures: For sand in eyes during dry sawing or grinding operations, immediately flush generously with water for 15 minutes. If irritation persists, seek medical attention. For gross inhalation, remove person immediately to fresh air, give artificial respiration as needed, seek medical attention as needed.

SECTION VII – PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE

Steps to be taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:

Utilize wet methods to minimize airborne dust concentrations whenever feasible. When dry sawing or grinding, use dustless systems for handling, storage, and cleaning so that airborne dust does not exceed the PEL. Use adequate ventilation and dust control/suppression equipment. Practice good housekeeping. Do not permit dust to collect on walls, floors, sills, ledges, machinery, or equipment. Maintain, clean, and fit test respirators in accordance with OSHA regulations. Maintain and test ventilation and dust collection equipment. Wash or vacuum clothing which has become dusty. See also control measures in Section VIII.

Waste Disposal Method: Normal breakage may be picked up and discarded as common waste. Residue from dry sawing and grinding operations should be disposed of in accordance with Federal, State, and Local regulations.

Other Precautions:

See OSHA Hazard Communication Rule 29 CFR Sections 1910.1200, 1915.99, 1917.28, 1918.90, 1926.59, and 1928.21, and state and local worker or community “right to know” laws and regulations. We recommend that smoking be prohibited in all areas where respirators must be used. WARN YOUR EMPLOYEES (AND YOUR CUSTOMERS – USERS IN CASE OF RESALE) BY POSTING, AND OTHER MEANS, OF THE HAZARD AND OSHA PRECAUTIONS TO BE USED. PROVIDE TRAINING FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES ABOUT THE OSHA PRECAUTIONS. See also American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Practice E1132-86, “Standard Practice for Health Requirements Relating to Occupational Exposure to Quartz Dust.”

SECTION VIII – CONTROL MEASURES Respiratory Protection Utilize suitable NIOSH approved respiratory protection devices whenever finished concrete or masonry products are used in a manner that produces dusts in excess of applicable exposure standards. Respirators should be selected based upon the exposure level encountered using industrial hygiene data and accepted respiratory protection practices. Since it is the respirable fraction of primary medical concern for dusts containing crystalline silica, it is advisable to utilize respiratory protection devices with High Efficiency Particulate Arresting capabilities (HEPA filtered). Consult a trained safety and health professional for assistance with proper selection of respiratory protection devices based upon your exposure situation.

All use of respiratory protection devices should be done consistent with requirements in the OSHA Respiratory Protection standard, 1910.134.

Ventilation: Local Exhaust: When finishing tasks produce concrete dusts in excess of applicable exposure standards, use

addition to those specified. These small quantities (less than 0.1%) may exist as intentional additions, or as “trace” or “residual” elements that generally originate in the raw materials used. These elements may include: antimony, arsenic, boron, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, columbium, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin, titanium, vanadium, and zirconium. 1 OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) are 8-hour TWA (time-weighted average) concentrations unless otherwise noted. A (“C”) designation denotes a ceiling limit, which should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure unless otherwise noted. A Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL) is defined as a 15-minute exposure, which should not be exceeded at any time during a workday. 2 Threshold Limit Values (TLV) established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) are 8-hour TWA concentrations unless otherwise noted. 3 PNOR (Particulates Not Otherwise Regulated). Section 3 - Hazards Identification Emergency Overview This formed solid metal product poses little or no immediate health or fire hazard. When product is subjected to welding, burning, grinding, melting, sawing, brazing, or other similar machining activities, potentially hazardous airborne particulate and fumes may be generated and should be evaluated by an industrial hygienist. Avoid inhalation of metal dusts and fumes. Operations having the potential to generate airborne particulates should be performed in well ventilated areas and, if it is impossible, respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment should be used. The presence of nonmetallic coatings (for example, oils, paints, epoxies, laminates, etc.) on steel products should be considered when evaluating potential employee health hazards during handling, welding, grinding, sanding or other fume/dust generating activities. Potential Health Effects Primary Entry Routes: Inhalation. Steel products in the natural state do not present an inhalation, ingestion or contact hazard. However, operations such as burning, welding, sawing, brazing, machining and grinding may result in the following effects if exposures exceed recommended limits as listed in Section 2. Target Organs: Respiratory system Acute Effects: . Inhalation: Excessive exposure to high concentrations of dust may cause irritation to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. Excessive inhalation of fumes of freshly formed metal oxide particles sized below 1.5 microns and usually between 0.02-0.05 microns from many metals can produce an acute reaction known as “metal fume fever”. Symptoms consist of chills and fever (very similar to and easily confused with flu symptoms), metallic taste in the mouth, dryness and irritation of the throat followed by weakness and muscle pain. The symptoms come on in a few

hours after excessive exposures and usually last from 12 to 48 hours. Long-term effects from metal fume fever have not been noted. Freshly formed oxide fumes of manganese and copper have been associated with causing metal fume fever. . Eye: Excessive exposure to high concentrations of dust may cause irritation to the eyes. Particles of iron or iron compounds, which become imbedded in the eye, may cause rust stains unless removed fairly promptly. Torching or burning operations on steel products with oil coatings may produce emissions that can be irritating to the eyes. . Skin: Skin contact with dusts may cause irritation or sensitization, possibly leading to dermatitis. Repeated or prolonged contact with oil residue may cause skin irritation, dermatitis or allergic reactions in sensitized individuals. . Ingestion: Ingestion of harmful amounts of this product as distributed is unlikely due to its solid insoluble form. Ingestion of dust may cause nausea or vomiting. Chronic Effects: Presented below are the potential health effects that have been identified for the ingredients listed that are of industrial hygiene significance. . IRON OXIDE: Chronic inhalation of excessive concentrations of iron oxide fumes or dusts may result in the development of a benign lung conditions known as pneumoconiosis, called siderosis, which is observable as an X-ray change. But, no physical impairment of lung function has been associated with siderosis. . ALUMINUM: Aluminum dusts/fines are a low health risk by inhalation and should be treated as a nuisance dust. . CHROMIUM: The health hazards associated with exposure to chromium are dependent upon its oxidation state. The metal form (chromium as it exists in this product) is of relatively low toxicity. Long term excessive inhalation of ferrochromium dusts and fumes may cause lung changes in exposed workers. Exposure to chromium metal does not give rise to pulmonary fibrosis or pneumoconiosis. The hexavalent form (Cr+6), unlike chromium metal is very toxic. Repeated or prolonged exposure to hexavalent chromium compounds may cause respiratory irritation, nosebleed, ulceration and perforation of the nasal septum. Industrial exposure to certain forms of hexavalent chromium has been related to an increased incidence of respiratory cancer. . COPPER: Chronic exposure to copper dusts may result in runny nose, irritation of mucous membranes, and atrophic changes with resultant dementia. Chronic inhalation of copper dust has caused, in animals, hemolysis of the red blood cells, deposition of hemofuscin in the liver and pancreas, injury to lung cells and gastrointestinal symptoms. . MANGANESE: Manganese dust and fume can act as minor irritants to the eyes and respiratory tract. Excessive inhalation exposure to manganese fume may result in a flu-like illness termed metal fume fever. Chronic exposure to high concentrations of manganese fumes and dusts may adversely affect the central nervous system (CNS) with symptoms including languor, sleepiness, weakness, emotional disturbances, spastic gait, mask-like facial expression and paralysis. Animal studies indicate that manganese exposure may increase susceptibility to bacterial and viral infections. . PHOSPHOROUS: Inhalation of dusts and fumes of ferrophosphorus and phosphorous oxides may cause respiratory irritation. . SILICON: Silicon dusts are a low health risk by inhalation and should be treated as a nuisance dust. . SULFUR: Sulfur compounds, present in the fumes, may irritate the skin, eyes, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Long-term inhalation exposure to high concentrations (over-exposure) to pneumoconiotic agents may act synergistically with inhalation of oxides, fumes or dusts of this product to cause toxic effects. Carcinogenicity: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and OSHA do not list steel products as carcinogens. IARC identifies nickel compounds as Group 1 (sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity in humans) and metallic nickel as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic for humans). NTP lists nickel as Group 2 (reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen). The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) lists insoluble nickel compounds as A1 (confirmed human carcinogen) and elemental/metallic nickel as A5 (not suspected as a

human carcinogen). IARC lists chromium metal and trivalent chromium compounds as Group 3 (not classifiable as to their human carcinogenicity). ACGIH lists chromium metal and trivalent compounds as A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen). IARC identifies welding fumes as a Group 2B carcinogen, a mixture that is possibly carcinogenic to fumans. Medical Conditions Aggravated by Long-Term Exposure: Individuals with chronic respiratory disorders (i.e., asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, etc.) may be adversely affected by any fume or airborne particulate matter exposure. Section 4 - First Aid Measures Inhalation: For over-exposure to airborne fumes and particulate, remove exposed person to fresh air. If breathing is difficult or has stopped, administer artificial respiration or oxygen as indicated. Seek medical attention promptly. Metal fume fever may be treated by bed rest, and administering a pain and fever reducing medication. Eye Contact: Treat for foreign body in the eye. Flush with large amounts of clean water to remove particles. Seek medical attention if irritation persists. Skin Contact: Not anticipated to pose a significant skin hazard.
