OrganizationOverview

TheMr.OctoberFoundationforKids(MOFK)isa

Californianon-profitpublicbenefitcorporation,foundedby

ReginaldM.JacksononMarch20,1997withthemissionof

improvingeducationalopportunitiesforunderprivileged

youth.Itsprimarymissionistoproviderealisticandreachablegoalsforunderservedcommunities,

wherechildrenhavenotshownapredispositiontowardacademicachievement,eventhoughtheyare

capableofdoingso.Inthatregard,Mr.Jacksonutilizeshisfameasaformermajor-leaguebaseballplayer

togainaccesstoawidevarietyofaudienceswherehefocusesonachievementbydedicationandadesire

tolearn.Heusesbaseballasametaphorandcapturestheattentionofhisaudiencesasheinstills

conceptslike“Sportsaregreat,butyoureducationcanhelpyouforyourentirelife.Longafteryourlegs

giveout,youstillhaveyoureducation.”Withaphorismsandhumanisticapproachesthatcomefroma

careerinsports,hehasbeensuccessfulatgainingattentionatalllevels.Hecountsashissuccessesa

numberofinstitutionsthathehasbeenabletosupport,rangingfromasmallcharterschoolinEastPalo

Alto,Californiathatwillonlyenrollstudentswhoshowpromiseandarewillingtowork(andnoneof

whosefamilymembersreceivedacollegeeducation)totheDetroitPublicSchools,toMorehouseCollege

and,withinthelastseveralyearstoGeorgiaTechUniversity’sEngineeringDepartment.GeorgiaTech

successfullygraduatesmoreAfrican-Americanengineersthananyotherhigher-levelinstitutioninthe

U.S.WiththehelpofitsDean,Dr.GaryMay,Mr.Jacksonhaslearnedhowtorefinehisinterestsfromtheir

initialbeginningsof“bridgingthedigitaldivide”toanew,sophisticatedprogramofprovidingSTEM

educationtotheNation’spromisingyouth.Onlythrougheducationcanweempowerchildrentolead

moreproductivelives.Neitherpovertynorilliteracyindicatesalackofintellect.TheNewEconomy

thriveswiththeperspectivesbroughtbyourNation’smotivatedyouth,andSTEMisthefutureoftheNew

Economy.EarlyexposuretoSTEMiswherethemotivationbegins.

AnyonewhohasseentheprogramminganddedicationoftheMOFKknowsthatMr.Jacksonhas

beengoingtobatfortheNation’syouth.Hegainshisenergyfromhisspirituality,coupledwiththe

realityofhavingseenthousandsofyoungpeoplewhoselivesquicklybecameaimlessandwithout

purposeoncetheyrealizedthattheywerenotgoingtobethenextgreatathlete,theonein10,000who

canmakeitintoprofessionalsports.Mr.Jackson,nowturningtheripeyoungageof70,trulybelieves

thathislifewillbeincompleteuntilhecanhelpmoreyoungpeoplerealizethattheireducationiswhat

willmakethedifference–notthedistractionsandinfluencesofthestreet.Ashisfather’swords

continuallyremindhim,“Ain’tnobodycantakeawayyoureducation,son.”

TheSTEMAcademy,Inc.(STEM101)isanationalnon-

profitorganizationdedicatedtoadvancingeconomic

developmentbyimprovingSTEMliteracyforallstudents.

STEM101provides21stcenturySTEMcareerminded

curriculumandprofessionaldevelopmenttoinspire,engage,andpreparestudentsfortheSTEMjobsof

tomorrow.Ourapproachisdesignedtoimproveunder-representedminorityandlow-incomestudent

growth,closeachievementgaps,decreasedropoutrates,increasehighschoolgraduationrates,and

improveteacherandprincipaleffectiveness.

TheSTEMAcademyrepresentsanationalnext-generationhighimpactacademicmodelthattargetsall

schoolsandallstudents.STEMCurriculumwasdevelopedinresponsetotheNationalAcademyof

Engineeringstudy,“EngineeringinK-12Education:UnderstandingtheStatusandImprovingthe

Prospects”.Themeta-disciplinary,stateandnationalstandardsbasedSTEMcurriculumcreatesstudent

pathwaysforindustryandpost-secondaryadvancement.Instructorandschoolcompetenciesare

validatedthroughnationalstandardSTEMinstructorcertificationandSTEMschoolaccreditation

practices.

ProjectOverview

Diversityisabusinessimperativethatdeliversbusinessandsocialvaluethatistremendouslyimportant.

ThisNYCSTEMProposalisfocusedonbuildingfemaleandunder-representedminoritiesSTEM

participation.

Knowledgeinscience,technology,engineering,andmath,or(STEM),canbethekeytoasuccessful

future.80%ofthefastestgrowingoccupationsintheUSdependonthemasteryofSTEMbased

education,howeverminoritystudentsaretypicallynotequippedtosatisfythisgrowingneed.

Providedtotheschoolsinthisprogramis:

• WorldclassSTEM101curriculumandLearningmanagementSystem

• OngoingProfessionaldevelopmentandbestpracticesforteachers.

• HandsonClassroomequipmentandsuppliesfortheactivitiesandexperiments

• Instructionalcoaches(1per4schools)whoworkonthegroundwiththeteachersand

studentsintheclassroom.

• QualityAssuranceManagerwhooverseestheproject,managestheinstructionalcoaches

andtheirschoolsaswellastheDataManager.

• DataManagerwhosupervisesallresearchanddatasurroundingtheprogram.Workswith

theQAMtominedataandimplementimprovementstrategiesforthefield.Responsible

StatementofPurpose

Thepurposeofthisprojectistoincreasethedisproportionatelylownumbersofwomenand

underrepresentedminoritiesintheSTEMworkforceandinpost-secondaryprograms.ThisworkinNew

YorkCitycanhelptocloseachievementgaps,decreasedropoutrates,increasehighschoolgraduation

rates,andimproveteacherandprincipaleffectiveness.

PopulationServedandhowtheywillbenefit

TheSTEMAcademy’sprovenscalablemodelcompletedapilotprogramintheNewYorkCitySchoolsin

2015andextendedthatpilotintoschoolsin2016(resultssectionisbelow).The2019Program

continuesintheBronxandinOakland.TheSTEMAcademyprogrammingcanincreasethe

disproportionatelylownumbersofwomenandunderrepresentedminoritiesintheSTEMworkforceand

inpostsecondaryprograms.StudentsacrossNewYorkCitycanbenefitby:

1. Bepreparedtopursueanyoptionafterhighschool

2. Haveanincreaseddispositionforpostsecondarytraining/college/university

3. Haveanideaofwhatcareertheywillpursuewhentheyaredonewithschool

4. HaveahigherinterestinpursuingSTEMcareersthantheirpeers.

NeedandJustification

ThereisashortageofSTEMprofessionalsthatisexpectedtoescalateasaresultoftheretiringofbaby-

boomers.AccordingtotheHealthEducationResearchInstitute,only31%ofallstudentswhoentered

collegein2009reportedplanstomajorinaSTEMdisciplineand35%ofhighschoolseniorsreported

aspiringtostudySTEMdisciplinesinapost-secondarysetting.Ina2009studyfromtheNational

AssessmentofEducationalProgress,43%ofHispanics,44%ofAmericanIndiansand50%ofAfrican-

Americansscores“below”basicinmathintheeighthgrade.AccordingtotheU.S.CensusBureau,in2008

morethan40%ofchildrenintheU.S.undertheageof5wereHispanic,African-AmericanorNative

American.

OurcountriesfailuretoprepareunderrepresentedyouthforSTEM-relatedcareerswillgreatlyimpact

America’scapacityforglobaleconomicleadership.IfwefailtodeveloparobustpipelineofSTEM

professionalscontainingwomenandthosefromunderrepresentedcommunities,therewillbeashortage

oftechnicalinnovation,lowereconomicgrowthandhigherunemploymentforallAmericans.

CorporatePartnerBenefitsOver600,000STEM-relatedtechnicaljobsintheUnitedStatesgounfilled.Preparingyoungpeoplewith

theskillsthatwillhelpmeetthatincredibledemandwillhelptheeconomy,aswellashelpkidsfinda

productivecareer,onethatclearlyknowsfewbounds.Inputfromamultidisciplinaryteamofemployers

andeducationprofessionalshasbeeninvaluableincreatingtheSTEMAcademyplatformthatdeliversthe

skillsneededtomeetthedemandsofthe21stcenturyjobmarket.

Beinginvolvedinthisprojectgoesfarbeyondmakinganinvestment.ThisSTEMprogramhasbuiltin

hundredsofskillsandcompetencies,howeverthreekeycomponentsgovernthedesign:

1. Creativeandinnovativethinkingpeoplewilluseandcreatetechnologyandsolutionsthatchange

ourlives.Studentsinschoolsshouldbelearningtobecreativeandinnovativewithout

boundaries.

2. Ultimately,everyonewillfindhimselforherselfseekingemployment.Studentsshouldbelearning

theemployabilityskillsthatwillevolvethemintodesiredemployees.

3. Therearemanywaystofindasolution.Studentsshouldbelearningtousetechnology,tools,and

theirownknowledgetosolveproblemsandgeneratenewideas.

Corporatepartnerscoulddirectlybenefitfromacapable,diversepipelineoftalentedyoungpeoplethat

havethesecharacteristicsbuiltintotheir“DNA”.Thisprogramcanbeanintegralpartoftheprocessto

ensurefutureemployeesarewellpreparedforproblemswecan’tpredicttoday.

TheCorporateConnectionsprogrambridgesthecareerawarenessgapbyconnectingstudent

experienceswithlocal,regionalandnationalcompanies.Theprograminspiresstudentstopursue21st

centurycareersviacorporatebrandedprojects.STEM101featuresover200studentprojectsthatcan

introducestudentsto16careerclusters,79careerpathwaysandhundredsofoccupations.

TheConnectionsprogramcanproduceacapable,diversepipelineoffutureemployeesthathavebuiltin

skillsandcapabilitiesrequiredbyemployers.Thisisanintegralpartoftheprocesstoensurefuture

employeesarewellpreparedforproblemswecan’tpredicttoday.Studentsandfutureemployeesare

equippedforcareers,collegeandtheirrolesinourcommunities.

Wepartnerwithcompaniestodevelopexciting,real-worldprojectswhichresultineffectiveeducation

outreach,communityrelationsandworkforcepipelinedevelopment.Projectresourcesaredesignedto

inspirestudentpursuitofadvancedSTEMeducationopportunitiesandqualifyadultsforpotential

employment.Resourcescanbeutilizedforin-school,after-school,summerprogramsandforworkforce

connectionservices.Inadditiontocompletingaprojectconnectedtoaparticipatingcompany,students

alsolearnaboutthecultureandimportantrolethecompanyplaysinthecommunity.Weworkwithstate

government,educationandindustryleaderstoensureprojectresourcesuseinsideofpubliceducation

andworkforceconnectionservices.

TheSTEMAcademyandMr.OctoberFoundationbegantheirworkwithNYCschoolsfundingthepilotin

2015.Fundsweresuccessfullyraisedfor2016withprogrammingin4schoolsintheBronxwithfunding

commitmentsfromtheBoothFerrisFoundation,TheNewYorkYankees,SAPandGeneralElectric.For

2019,thePinkertonFoundationandtheNewYorkYankeeshaveagainsponsoredtheprogram.

• Coaches:Eachofthe4schoolswillneedapaidInstructorCoachtobeintheclassroomsforthe

schoolyearatvarioustimes.TheInstructionalCoach,havingbothcontentandinstructional

expertise,willworkasacolleaguewithclassroomteacherstosupportstudentlearningand

teacherpractice.TheInstructionalCoachwillfocusonindividualandgroupprofessionallearning

thatwillexpandandrefinetheunderstandingaboutresearched-baseeffectiveinstructionfor

teachers.Inordertomeetthispurpose,theInstructionalCoachwillprovidepersonalized,1:1

Theexistingprogramminginfrastructureensureslimitedornoinvestmentfromoutsidefundingto

createsuchaninfrastructureandthattheframeworkbehindtheprogramsupportstheSummerSTEM

programsexistence.Someschoolsrequireeverystudenttoattendthesummerprogramandsome

schoolsprovidetheprogramasanoptiontostudents.Theseprogramsareprovidedatthestudent’s

responsibilityoftheschoolorschooldistrict.TheSTEMAcademyintendstocontinuetograntthe
