I accepted the job as the new Director of Abbeyfield SA in November 2013. In the short time I have been with Abbeyfield I have seen many examples of the commitment and dedication of our staff and local committees, and of the exceptional good will of our stakeholders / funders. While this letter isn’t the best way to introduce myself, please allow me to tell you a bit about why I accepted the opportunity to become the Director of Abbeyfield, what my priorities are and what I expect to accomplish by working together local societies, residents and partners. Why did I join Abbeyfield SA? First and foremost, I joined Abbeyfield because this is a place with unparalleled potential. It is a common known fact that South Africa faces a massive housing provision crisis. Government is struggling to meet the demand for affordable housing in general, the situation being especially bleak for many older persons. The Abbeyfield model provides a proven alternative to the traditional institutionalization of seniors. This is also culturally appropriate given that seniors can remain within their communities for as long as they are able to do so. In my time as the National Coordinator of the South African Older Persons’ Forum (SAOPF) we lobbied very intensely for a better deal for older persons, however, so much more still needs to be done to better the lives of seniors’. I truly do believe that Abbeyfield have a big role to play in helping, in our small way, by providing that better life for seniors’ within the safety and security of Abbeyfield community homes. It is thanks to the hardwork of previous Directors such as Rose, Zoe and Wendy that Abbeyfield have grown into a formidable organisation. The biggest acknowledgement for the success of almost all societies, however, can be ascribed to the hard work of our local committees. Most committees work tirelessly to ensure that homes are run well and that the residents are happy. In time I hope to meet every committee member, and as the HO we are already busy looking at more ways in which we can support existing committees and also recruit new ones, where needed. I wish to thank all who so warmly welcomed me into the Abbeyfield family and I hope that our road together will be long and fruitful. DEAR ABBEYFIELDERS, I am proud to have been given the role of leading Abbeyfield South Africa, an organisation with a long and proud heritage and a future directed at meeting the growing housing and care needs of older persons and I look forward to continuing our tradition of serving communities by establishing new societies and upgrading existing ones. NEWS AND EVENTS

The Board of the Abbeyfield were deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the death of one of our much loved and respected colleagues and former Director of 20 years, Rose Stolze. Rose passed away on the 20th of February, she was 71 years old. In the last few years Rose had been fighting a battle against Alzheimer’s disease. Rose’s parents fled the Russian occupied East Germany in 1947 to West Germany and immigrated to South Africa in 1950. The family settled in German speaking Wartburg in Natal. In 1965 she accepted a transfer to Cape Town where she was employed until August 1967.

Rose obtained a B.A Degree, majoring in History and Languages from the University of Cape Town. Rose joined the Abbeyfield Society in 1987 as Director, she held the position until May 2007. She received an Honorary Life Membership of the Abbeyfield Society in 2007 and was awarded the Royal Patron’s Award for her work at Abbeyfield from HRH the Prince of Wales in 2008. Rose is survived by her Husband, Cedric and her two sisters,Linde and Gina.Rose made an outstanding contribution to establishment and growth of Abbeyfield in South Africa.

Atlantis Residents Celebrating at Spur!

We are very excited to announce that, if all goes well, construction on a brand new Abbeyfield Home will be kick off very soon. The new home will be located in PelicanPark in Cape Town and will house 13 older persons.

PelicanPark is the largest integrated development zone in South Africa. The community is very poor and the need for affordable housing for seniors is very high. This home will be based on a new and exciting model that will, in addition to senior residents, also house an After Care and Soup Kitchen that will be run by a local faith association. Needless to say, the costs associated with building this home is extremely high and we are appealing to all to consider a donation for this very important project. It is my pleasure to inform you that the new home will be named in honour of the first Director of Abbeyfield SA Ms Rose Stolze.

HELEN ESCTCOURT, the chairpersonof the Wyndover Manor committee resigned in December 2013, after serving on the committee for 25 years.

LYNN SCHREIBER who served on thecommittee as well, also resigned in December 2013.

Robin Harper was treasurer of The Abbeyfield Society of Hout Bay for many years. His connections to The Spinney, where Stein House is located, go back further than 2000. Before that he was doing the accounts for the Hout Bay and Llandudno Association (which gave birth to the Spinney) and he helped greatly to establish Stein House as an Abbeyfield home and thereafter York House in the harbour area of Hout Bay. After retiring from Abbeyfield he continued to do the accounts for the Spinney as he so loved working with figures. He and his wife Pam were both very involved in the day to day running of the Spinney. We will miss Robin and are grateful to him for his years of dedication.Marilyn Thomas
