Moving Forward

Entiat Parents and Community,

A little over twelve months ago when State Officials closed schools as a result of a new virus strain called COVID-19, none of us had any idea the twists and turns the subsequent year would take. Now a year later after dealing with the stress, emotional toll, and heartache this virus has caused we are finally starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The Entiat School District staff and administration have worked to provide our students with the best possible educational model allowed within the constraints that we had to work with. One of the key considerations in all of our decisions was taking into account how our decisions would affect families and what they were having to deal with.

Last week, Governor Inslee reduced the required spacing in Elementary classrooms from six feet to three feet. This was seen as the last barrier for many districts on the westside of the State that had not brought back any of their students. Fortunately, we have had our students in classrooms since the fall. Currently all of our students are attending at least three hours a day five days a week. Students and families have done an excellent job of adjusting to the schedule and developing a routine that is working smoothly. In looking at a possible expansion in light of last week’s announcement, administration started to put together scenarios. The result was the following conclusions:

• A change in the model would not take place until the first part of May to allow time to reset and prepare for changes to be made with facility, staffing, schedules etc.

• The three foot guidelines do not apply to Middle School or High School nor in common areas such as the lunch area. The six foot requirement would still be in place which would cause staffing and space issues.

• Quarantine protocols still remain in effect so if there is a positive case in a classroom, the close contacts would have to remain home 14 days. If there are two or more positive cases in a class the entire class would need to remain home 14 days.

• In order to meet the six foot requirement at lunch, ½ the class could eat in the Commons and the other ½ would need to eat in the classroom thus doubling staffing needs for supervision.

• Some students would have class schedule changes as well as a change in teachers in order to meet the requirements.

• Students and staff would be starting their third different learning model this school year. Based on these conclusions and the changes that expansion would cause students and families, the Entiat School District administration and the School Board have determined that it is in our community’s best interest to finish this school year in the current learning model and continue our planning for full day operation in the fall. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Miles Caples Superintendent [email protected] 509-888-5174

Avanzando

CHILD FIND Child Find is a federal program available through public schools that is designed to locate and evaluate children, age birth through age 21, who may have a disability that hinders educational development. Entiat School District offers this free screening to children who live within the district’s boundaries, including home-schooled and private school students. If your family is living in a temporary situation, you may contact the school district where you are staying to attend a screening, as all Washington school districts have Child Find screenings available. Children may qualify for special education and related health services if they have delays in speech, language, fine motor, gross motor, behavior skills, and/or learning, or if their learning is impacted by vision, hearing and mobility limitations. Please contact Elementary Secretary Marilyn Kamphaus at 784-1314 to schedule a Child Find screening appointment.

*Donate your old cell phones*

The pre-K class started out the year with 4 old

non-working cell phones but they have

disappeared (I’m sure they went home by

accident in someone’s pocket ). If you have

an old unused cell phone, please think about

donating it to our classroom. You could drop it by the

office and tell them it is for the pre-K class, it would be

much appreciated.

No meals will be served this week(4/5-9). They will resume Monday 4/12.
