Hilton Quest students celebrate Culture Day
Students and staff at Quest Elementary School in Hilton held their fi rst Culture Day on Mar. 27 and it was a resounding success. Primary student Luke Pisani, with the guidance of Greg Booth, REACH (gifted and talented) teacher, organized the morn-ing-long event.
Students rotated through sessions with their pass-ports to help them keep track of the countries they visited. Twenty-one countries in all were represented in 21 different rooms with presentations by teachers, Quest students, and students from Roberts Wesleyan College. Presentations included games and activities, such as learning a Spanish dance, food tasting, dem-onstrations and displays, but also included religions, literature, trading/bartering/paying for goods and services, communication and much more.
After spring break, Quest elementary-level students started a new planner (unit of study) entitled Around the World in Six Weeks. The Culture Day that took place on the last day before vacation was a great way to jump start the new planner. Students are learning how cultures share similarities and differences across the world. Classes are studying a variety of cultures and exploring some of the literature that exists in these cultures as well. Provided information

Buffalo Road safety project in Gates resumes
Construction work is resuming on a $3.6 million safety project to ease congestion and improve safety along Route 33 (Buffalo Road) between Trabold Road and Marway Circle in the town of Gates, Monroe County. Traffi c impacts are underway.
The project will widen Route 33 in the area of Home Depot/Tinseltown Access Road, Wegman Road and Pixley Road in order to provide space for an ad-ditional eastbound through lane, plus right-turn lanes to improve traffi c fl ow and safety. Sidewalks will be added along the south side of Route 33 from Trabold Road to Marway Circle. Space for bicyclists will be provided along the corridor and existing bicyclist and pedestrian amenities will be upgraded. The project will also include resurfacing the existing pavement, upgrading the drainage system and traffi c signals, and installing landscaping, signs, and pavement markings, according to the NYSDOT.
Beginning last week, motorists could expect daily lane closures along Buffalo Road between the I-490 interchange east towards the Gates Chili High School. Motorists should allow extra travel time to safely pass through the highway work zone. Highway crews will generally work weekdays from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Two-way travel will be maintained at all times along the Buffalo Road corridor. Short term closures at expressway entrance and exit ramps will occur this summer during milling and paving operations. Elec-tronic message boards will inform motorists before these closures occur. Access to all parking lots will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.
Utility relocation work took place during the 2014 season, along with the addition of new sidewalks to the west of the I-490 interchange.
The construction contractor for the project is CATCO, of Alden, Erie County. Work is expected to be complete by August 2015.
Motorists are reminded that fi nes are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individuals drivers license.

In this series of articles, Westside News Inc. asks own-ers of small businesses in the readership about their experiences, how they have adapted their business plan
to meet the needs of the marketplace and economy and what they have learned in the process. In coming install-ments, well interview other new and veteran business owners from around the Westside News Inc. delivery area. This weeks In Business features Spencerport Family Apothecary.
Evelyn DowEditor, Westside News Inc.
Know your business, have a plan, says Spencerport Family Apothecary owner
The Spencerport Family Apothecary opened its doors just last September and is located in the Village Woods Plaza in Spencerport.
An independent pharmacy, the business is owned and operated by Eric Schladebeck, who says that since open-ing, the business has had, ... nothing but growth.
Eric has been working in retail pharmacy for more than 15 years. He began his career after starting at Wal-Mart in 1998 and quickly becoming bored with stocking the shelves. A new pharmacy manager advised him to go to pharmacy school and thats just what he did. He now holds a doctorate degree in pharmacy from the State Uni-versity at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuti-cal Sciences. He continued his pharmacy work as a regis-tered pharmacy intern while in college and now has been a licensed, practicing pharmacist for more than eight years. Additionally, he is nationally certified in Medica-tion Therapy Management (MTM).
Q. Why did you decide to open your own pharmacy? Wal-Mart was great at the start, Eric says. But he said in some ways he felt like a part in the machine and began to ask himself, What am I going to do?
He decided to follow his dream of opening his own pharmacy and has never looked back. I didnt take no for an answer, he says of the process of starting his own business. Whatever it took, I just did it. Every door has opened for me.
His years of pharmacy experience have proved invalu-able. I knew exactly what to do, he says, and blazed forward.
Q: How did you end up locating in Spencerport?Eric says he was on the look-out for a good location, when he spotted a building for lease in Village Woods Plaza, located on the northwest corner of the busy intersection of Routes 259 and 31, just north of the Route 531 express-way interchange.
I found it a little prematurely, he admits - at the time he was working to develop his business plan and secure money. He did receive a loan and then, was involved in the work of renovating the building.
The interior is welcoming, spacious, warm and bright. There is a comfortable seating area and, in addition to state-of-the-art prescription filling services, Spencerport Family Apothecary is an authorized dealer of Revive Bath and Body all natural bath products; Bridgewater Can-dles; Bottles and Bonfires recycled wine bottle candles; J.R. Watkins personal products; Auric Blends perfume oils; and Grandmas Soap products.
The Spencerport Family Apothecary is also well-stocked with a full range of over-the-counter pharmacy items, du-rable medical equipment and a variety of personal care goods.
When you own your own business, you are invested, you take a greater interest, Eric says and adds he treats every patient as an individual, not a number.
Q: What advice would you give to those who would like to open their own business? Know your business, Eric advises. If it is your dream, go for it, but dont blindly blaze ahead. Make sure theres a market and use the skills you have.
Eric explains he was groomed into pharmacy, and re-members the elation of finally getting his degree.
I had a trade and a skill set. Its like the sun is brighter and the days are nicer. Owning your own business is the difference between having a job and having a career. Its awesome to get up and come to work and at the end of the day, it feels really good to get home at 6:30 ... its great to have a family again.
Q: What are your plans for the future?Maybe hire another pharmacist, Eric explains, grow the compounding side of the business, grow the (prescrip-tion) count. I would love to get people in here to get phar-macy the way it is supposed to be.
He adds that when time allows, he also hopes to become more involved in the community.
The Spencerport Family Apothecary is currently ac-cepting most prescription insurance plans. Pharmacy hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to transfer prescriptions call 585-349-3562.

Suburban News North and South Editions - April 12, 2015 5Tea at the Beach Ap. 26helps Petra Place
What has become an annual rite of spring, the Petra Place Counseling Center Tea at the Beach is set for Sun-day, April 26 at the Robach Community Center at Ontario Beach Park, from 2 to 5 p.m. The event features a high tea menu including freshly brewed teas and finger foods.
Guests will be inspired by a host of spirit-filled guest speakers who will share their personal stories about jour-neying towards improved mental health. A number of young performers will provide entertainment, and ven-dors will be on hand to show off their wares. Raffles will round out the event.
This years tea is being planned by the many volunteers who give of their time to help the Petra Place cause, as well as interns from Roberts Wesleyan College who spend time at the counseling center as part of their college pro-gram.
Located at 888 Long Pond Road in Greece, Petra Place is a 503(c) non-profit agency which offers mental health services on a sliding scale for the uninsured, as well as provides community outreach as needs are identified. The center relies heavily on donations and support from the community to provide these services.
Donation for the tea is $30. Reservations can be made by calling Petra Place at 739-7777. Guests can leave a message and calls for reservations will be returned.
For information about Petra Place services and future fund-raisers, like the organization on Facebook or join their mailing list by calling the center.

TEARS AMONGST THE FLOWERS
www.burgerfuneralhome.com
Sending flowers to the funeral home not only provides a fitting tribute to the deceased, but it also comforts the living. Because these arrangements are often large and formal, they are usually selected by the deceaseds family to incorporate into the graveside services. Sympathy flowers, on the other hand, can be sent directly to the homes of family members, friends, acquaintances, and business associates of the deceased. Arrangements of this sort are usually small- or medium-sized, which makes them suitable for placement on side tables and for use as centerpieces. Those interested in sending a more lasting form of condolence may want to consider
sending a plant, which will continue to grow and bloom in memory of the deceased.
Sending a floral tribute is an appropriate way of expressing sympathy to the family of the deceased. Flowers express a feeling of life and beauty and can offer much comfort. Their fragrant beauty and comforting qualities serve as a herald of hope reminding us of the spirit of life. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Strong Wests renovated second floor to houseoncology and other services; opens in Juneby Kristina Gabalski
Construction crews are busy at Strong West in Brockport as work is well under-way on a complete renovation of the sec-ond floor of the former Lakeside Memorial Hospital building.
Bryan ODonovan, Strong West Adminis-trator of Operations, says the space which formerly housed the ICU and in-patient beds is being converted to house the Wilm-ot Cancer Institute, Interlakes Oncology and Hematology and Brockport Medical Associates, a primary care provider.
Everything has been stripped, he says of the second floor, it will now be com-pletely modern and state of the art.
Both Interlakes Oncology, staffed by Robert Asbury, M.D., Jessica Kleiner, M.D., Alexander Solky, M.D., Lisa Acosta, P.A., and Cindy Ingalls, P.A., and Brock-port Medical Associates Primary Care,
staffed by Alex Fahoury, M.D., and Chris-tina William, M.D., are currently housed at 156 West Avenue on the ground floor of the Strong West complex.
The move will help Strong West con-tinue its commitment to patient-centered care, ODonovan says.
Primary Care will go from 1,960 sq. ft. and four small exam rooms to 7,350 sq. ft. with seven large exam rooms which for-merly served as in-patient rooms with two beds. Interlakes currently occupies 2,000 sq. ft. and has three exam rooms and six infusion chairs. The new location on the second floor encompasses 3,601 sq. ft. with four large exam rooms. The six infusion chairs will remain the same, but there will be much more space and brighter light from second-story windows. The new lo-cation will also feature one large private infusion room.
ODonovan explains the current Inter-
lakes location, .... is not efficient for infu-sion, patients can be there for hours, he says. The new location is, designed with patients in mind.
Much time and effort went into design-ing the new space which is roomy and bathed with natural light from the win-dows. O Donovan explains that the Inter-lakes space will be separate from the Pri-mary Care office space.
On the Primary Care side of the second floor, the waiting room/check-in/check-out have been designed, with efficiency for patients to get in and out, ODonovan says and emphasizes that with the oncol-ogy/primary care move to the second floor, Strong is continuing its commitment to, provide excellent access to health care services. The project, which has included a complete overhaul of the second floors infrastructure, has been a major invest-ment for Strong/UR Medicine, ODonovan says.
The building was never wired for elec-tronic medical records, he explains, ev-erything behind the walls and above the ceiling is new, - that includes HVAC and fireproofing.
The middle section of the second floor in-cludes a new nurses station, a locker room
for staff as well as a bright new staff break room that features a wall of windows. Its the best break room in all Strong Memo-rial Hospital, O Donovan says.
Former in-patient rooms along the north side of the floor outside the oncology space will be used for physician offices.
Everything has been designed with fu-ture expansion in mind, ODonovan adds and notes that with the renovation of the second floor, Strong West is now, using the entire property.
The target date for opening the second floor is June 1 and ODonovan says an open house for the public will be planned around that time. We love to have the community come back, he says, noting that many people remember what the up-per floors of the facility were like when it was Lakeside Memorial Hospital.
In the past 18 months since Strong West opened in Brockport, employment at the facility has grown from 30 to 115 full-time positions, he says.
Morale is very high, ODonovan ob-serves, and we are getting great patient feedback. We feel really good about what we have done to fulfill the promise we made to the community.

Prudential Discover Real Estate joins Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Real Estate Brokerage Network
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, part of the HSF Affiliates LLC family of real estate brokerage franchise networks, has welcomed Prudential Discover Real Estate to the network operation as Berkshire Hathaway Home-Services Discover Real Estate.
We are excited about our future with Berkshire Hath-away HomeServices, said Broker/Owner Dennis Levan-
dowski, who operates the company with his sons, Marc and Matt. Its an honor to represent a brand inspired by Berkshire Hathaway, one of the worlds most trusted and respected companies.
Berkshire Hathaway Ho-meServices has grown rapid-ly since its launch 16 months ago, and now counts nearly 35,000 agents and 1,100 offic-
es operating in 47 states. Already, the network was named 2014 Real Estate Agency Brand of the Year by consum-ers in the 26th annual Harris Poll EquiTrend study and Startup of the Year among all U.S. indusries at the 2014 American Business Awards.
Levandowski said the compelling, new brand will ap-peal to consumers and real estate alike. Discover Real Estate is built on the values of trust, integrity, stabiliity and longevity, which are values our agents live every day, he said.
With the transition, Discover Real Estate agents gain access to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Global Net-work Platform - a suite of online tools, applications and services - plus ongoing business consultation, professional education and marketing support. Resources include pow-erful lead generation, a handy mobile app and other tools driven by the most accurate real estate data available. The Global Network Platform will be a powerful resource for our agents and consumers as we continually strive to enhance the quality of service we provide, Levandowski said.
Stephen Phillips, president of Berkshire-Hathaway Ho-meServices, welcomed the brokerage, Dennis, Marc, Matt and their expert team are well respected in the Rochester area, and were delighted theyve chosen to go forward with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, he said.
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices offices are located at 162 South Union Street, Spencerport, 352-4896.
Saints open with win over Spencerportby Warren Kozireski
Five players netted two or more goals with Mara Zimmerman, Jessica Hyde and Katie Cosgrove each scoring three or more to lead Churchville-Chili to a 17-3 win over Spencerport in the season lid-lifter for both girls lacrosse teams.
The Saints scored four times over the first three minutes of the contest on goals from Emily Hawryschuk, Olivia Kuter and two from Zimmerman.
With their pressure defense and dominance in the center circle on draws, the Saints allowed Spencerport just four possessions beyond midfield over the first 25 minutes.
Zimmerman added two more goals with Hyde and Kendall Skuse each scoring twice and Skylar Burlee, Cosgrove and Amy Sedita each adding one goal as the Saints built a 12-0 halftime lead.
The Rangers came out of the break and scored twice with Erin Coykendall getting the first off an assist from older sister Emily at 2:40 of the second half. Maliah
Benedetto scored the Rangers second goal - unassisted - four minutes later.
Churchville-Chili netted five of the next six tallies to ice the contest. Zimmerman scored her fourth of the game after a pass from Cosgrove and Hawryschuk scored just fifteen seconds apart.
After the Coykendalls teamed up again for the final Rangers goal, Cosgrove scored twice and Hyde once over the final ten minutes.
I was a little surprised with how we came out in the first half after just a couple of scrimmages, Saints head coach BJ Durham said. Our pressure and the work of Hawryschuk, Cosgrove and Hyde on the draws helped.
Zimmerman finished with six points on four goals and two assists, Cosgrove had a pair of assists to go with her hat trick and Hyde added one assist to her three goal effort. Hawryschuk and Skuse each had a pair of goals while Kuter had one goal with two assists for the 1-0 Saints.
