Passing on the baton after 34 years

SCHÄFER’s Peter Bosbach retired at the end of October

The impressive development of SCHÄFER WERKE is closely linked to his own achievements as an accomplished executive and personality. The 64-year-old economics degree-holder Peter Bosbach has always had a special affinity for steel. After successfully graduating from university, he spent five years at the steel giant ESTEL, a merger bet-ween Hoesch and Hoogovens (NL), gaining valuable experience of the industry. In 1979, he moved to the steel processing SCHÄFER Group where he could apply his knowledge and was instrumental in writing a major part of the company’s success story.

In November 2012, Rainer Bröcher was appointed managing director of SCHÄFER WERKE GMBH. The 47-year-old took charge of SCHÄFER Container Systems, SCHÄFER Perforated Metal, SCHÄFER Interior Systems and SCHÄFER IT-Systems. All divisional sales managers and the central business divisions report to him. The university graduate in industrial engi-neering began his career at Buderus Heiz-technik AG in Wetzlar as the head of sales and marketing. After subsequently working for a number of years at the SCHÄFER WERKE sister company SSI SCHÄFER, he moved to

the firm LISTA GmbH. There, after around 15 years of management responsibility in sales and marketing, he became chairman of the management board. Rainer Bröcher retur-ned to the SCHÄFER Group in 2012.

Since November 2013, the EMW Steel Service Centre in Neunkirchen has also been under new management, with Michael Mocken-haupt (47) taking responsibility as managing director. Here, he has taken over from Peter Bosbach, who, besides his achievements at SCHÄFER WERKE GMBH, also did an outstan-ding job of making EMW Stahl Service GmbH so successful. With his long-standing experience at the side of Peter Bosbach, Michael Mockenhaupt, who has been with SCHÄFER WERKE since 1992, is the guarantee that the transition will run smoothly. After gaining his diploma in commerce, Michael Mockenhaupt initially worked as a management assistant, before becoming sales manager responsible for South Germany and export. A few years later, he was promoted to the position of division manager, where he ran EMW’s business processes with great skill and foresight. This internal solution will ensure some continuity is maintained.

Peter Bosbach (centre) passes on the EMW baton to Michael Mockenhaupt (left) and the SCHÄFER WERKE baton to Rainer Bröcher (right). Also present at the baton change, managing partner Theo Schäfer and his daughter and shareholder Beate Schäfer-Henrichs.

The transition from Bosbach to the next generation required careful long-term plan-ning. By successfully integrating other exe-cutives, Bröcher and Mockenhaupt will both be able to rely on a strong team. That’s why the SCHÄFER WERKE shareholders are con-fident that the company’s history of mean-while over 60 years can be supplemented by many successful chapters in the future.

The situation ahead looks promising and the company will continue to invest in its

location – important news for the region’s people in these challenging times. Commenting on the handover of responsi-bility, Theo Schäfer, the managing partner, said: “Peter Bosbach has accompanied me for many long years and, as the managing direc-tor of SCHÄFER WERKE and EMW, has always been one of the most important members of my staff. I would like to thank him for his tireless work, his energy and decisiveness and hope that he will now find more time for his hobbies. We are sure that in Michael

Sharing 120 square metres of stand space, EMW and SCHÄFER Perforated Metal performed very successfully at the Blech-expo in Stuttgart from 5th. to 8th. November. The spacious stand offered plenty of scope for demonstrating the countless services that provide the synergies between these two sister companies that are unique in the German steel industry. This combination of extensive thin sheet stocks and subsequent processing in one and the same company is a rarity in the German steel sector that has resulted in short distances and great flexibi-lity, from which the customers of both divi-sions reap the benefits. Their appearance together at the trade fair was intended to underline their combines expertise. Both EMW and SCHÄFER Perforated Metal supply customers in the automotive sector, among many others. EMW provides vehicle manufacturers with slit strips and cut-to-size blanks which are usually processed into body parts. Besides softer deep-drawing steels, EMW also supplies high-tensile steels

for crash-relevant safety components. State-of-the-art slitting lines and a constantly avai-lable, in-stock volume of around 100,000 tons of thin sheet in almost all current market grades ensure EMW can guarantee just-in-time delivery to customer specifications. Customers of SCHÄFER Perforated Metal are also beneficiaries of the short supply lines between these two Pfannenberg “next-door neighbours”, as their raw materials come directly from EMW. Important application fields for perforated metal include sound proofing/noise protection, retail design and architecture. With well over 400 perforation patterns available as standard, SCHÄFER Per-forated Metal can supply customised designs for facade cladding and noise protection bar-riers, but also for shelf systems and seating furniture. With its great variety of tools and machinery, SCHÄFER Perforated Metal gua-rantees an extensive range of possibilities for manufacturing perforated metal sheets in steel, stainless steel and aluminium. The syn-ergies between these two SCHÄFER WERKE

divisions lead to success on other levels, too. Since the DIN-ISO-14001 environmen-tal management certificate was awarded to EMW, the other SCHÄFER WERKE divisi-ons have been working on the certification of their own environmental management systems. An ISO 50001 energy management system was introduced at the Neunkirchen and Betzdorf sites and was certified in Sep-tember 2013. The first goal is increasing transparency in energy-relevant processes by systemati-cally uncovering areas where energy can be saved and implementing those savings. Initial projects have already led to conside-rable reductions being made. For instance, by modernising lighting at the Betzdorf pro-duction hall, a 52 % energy saving was made while increasing the level of illumination. This corresponds to a reduction of 180 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Since the beginning of the year, a new slit strip measuring device has been in opera-tion at EMW. The new width measurement control mechanism, installed in the Guida line, is an innovative, optical quality control device for slitting lines, which can be easily inte-grated into existing quality control systems. The process reliably documents the quality produced, thus making an important con-tribution to preventing complaints. To carry out the measurements, a camera travels at a maximum speed of 100 mm/s over the slit strips which are separated in the tension unit. The measuring time depends on the number of strips and takes from 10 to approx. 40 seconds. Moving at the same speed underneath the strips is an LED light source, which the camera has to capture to measure the width. The result is that the inspection system receives an exact image of the slits’ external edges, based on the following standardised levels of precision:

Slit strip measurement width precision 20 – 100 mm ± 0.01 mm 101 – 300 mm ± 0.02 mm 301 – 600 mm ± 0.025 mm 601 – 1,000 mm ± 0.03 mm 1,001 – 1,700 mm ± 0.04 mm

Measurements can be taken faster and more accurately, as human error can be ruled out. The problem of inaccuracies arising from setting and measuring many different strip widths on one single coil can also be elimina-ted. What makes this system so economical is the combination of time saved compared to manual control and the avoidance of errors. The strips’ automatic width measurement is then directly compared to the width toleran-ces specified by the customer. All results are then immediately and securely documen-ted and archived via SAP, which means that coupling this data to higher level control systems or master computers enables operation without any additional operator settings on the slitting line.

Circular blanks: EMW goes round!

The EMW Steel Service Centre is extending its range and is now supplying circular blanks.

These circular metal discs are needed in a variety of different sectors today.

Housings for brake boosters, contai-ners, satellite dishes, beer kegs, frying pans, traffic signs – all these very different products have one thing in common. They are made from flat, round discs made of steel, stainless steel or aluminium, known as circular blanks. As of now, circular blanks are also available from EMW. With a brand new circular blank cutting machine, the Steel Service Centre manufactures these blanks from all metal types, straight from the coil, no pre-slitting required. High stamping speeds enable the machine to produce large quantities in a very short time. This mechanical stamping with

a pressing force of 250 tons is far superior to laser cutting in terms of speed and econo-mic efficiency. EMW’s circular blank cutting machine can cut metal sheet of between 0.75 and 4 mm in thickness and produce blanks with diameters up to 750 mm. They are then packaged and dispatched in customized for-mats, exactly as the customer ordered. An essential pre-condition for high-quality finished products are, of course, blanks that meet the highest demands of flatness, mate-rial quality and surface quality. EMW’s manuf-acturing process can guarantee all this, as the elimination of pre-slitting prevents unneces-

sary strain on the material. In addition, EMW’s so-called scrap-optimised stamping not only contributes to a good price/performance ratio, but also to eco-friendly and sustainable production.

Machining

means added valuePunching holes in metal sheets is only the beginning. With its specialised machining service,

SCHÄFER Perforated Metal can implement countless customer-specific wishes.

400 different perforation patterns is the standard range of choice for SCHÄFER Perfo-rated Metal customers and when it comes to developing new customized patterns, there are scarcely any limits to our creativity. This doesn’t only apply to perforations for entire coils, but also for cut-to-size blanks. Sheets of up to 1,500 mm in width and 6,000 mm long can be manufactured on customer request with strip perforations, field perforations, a combination of both or with perforation-free edges. However, the practical demands placed on the sheets are just as varied as the range of design possibilities. So that they can be pro-cessed quickly without any delays, they must fulfil specific standards in each individual case. To name just two examples: stainless

steel perforated sheets for a screening line in food processing must be completely grease-free, whereas perforated facade sheets for a new football stadium in club colours need to be powder coated. For all the tasks besides perforation which are frequently in demand, SCHÄFER Perfora-ted Metal has built up its own highly efficient range of machines and equipment to enable the single source machining of perforated sheets to customer specifications. The skilled staff at SCHÄFER Perforated Metal can carry out laser cutting, notching, ben-ding, de-greasing, powder-coating, anodi-sing and a range of other machining services on request. This means customers can cut out unnecessary investment and utilize the space in their own production plants for more pro-

fitable activities. Due to the high production volume, the unit costs for the machining ser-vice at SCHÄFER are very low.SCHÄFER Perforated Metal attaches great importance to integrating the machined perforated sheet solutions precisely into its customers’ workflow and so provide them with optimal support in manufacturing high-quality finished products. So it’s not just in the field of perforation patterns, but also in its machining service that SCHÄFER Perforated Metal is keen to work together with custo-mers to develop new product design possi-bilities for realising solutions that are unique on the market.

Braunschweig fans show their

colours with SCHÄFER

Just in time for the start of the new Bundesliga season, newly promoted Eintracht Braunschweig has fitted their

stadium with anodised perforated metal sheets from SCHÄFER.

Braunschweig are back in the top flight for the first time since 1985 and the club is celebrating this new era in its history by giving its head office – and of course its sta-dium – a completely new look. For this, the architects Schulitz & Partner have developed their own colour scheme, based on the Eintracht club colours of blue and yellow. The 270 sun protection lamellas in zinc yellow, sapphire blue, signal blue and sky blue were supplied by SCHÄFER Perforated Metal by order of sun protection specialists H&J HARMS Sonnenschutztechnik GbR from Zwickau. For this unusually colourful project, requiring complex manufacturing proces-ses for the coating, SCHÄFER was very much able to prove its punctuality and customer-oriented approach. The 650 mm wide and 3.45 metre long aluminium sheet lamellas were perforated, bent, coated in the specified

colours and supplied directly to the construc-tion site in just-in-time deliveries. SCHÄFER Perforated Metal produced the lamellas on schedule by the end of July, just before the 2013/14 Bundesliga season was due to kick off. The contractor installed the lamellas at the Eintracht stadium above the entrance area to the west stand. In November, installation of another 188 lamellas in club

colours was completed above the Eintracht Braunschweig head office. The head office is also located in the sta-dium complex at Hamburger Straße in Braunschweig. As the new complex at the stadium was to be completed by the first day of the new season on 9th. August, there was only a short period available for installation. Reacting quickly to customers' special wishes, reliability and extraordinarily high quality are characteristics of SCHÄFER Perforated Metal which made a significant contribution to the project's success", says Jens-Uwe Harms, owner of the metal working company with the installa-tion contract. Thanks to its great variety of tools, SCHÄFER Perforated Metal has a great capacity for processing metal sheet, inclu-ding perforating coils and slit strips as well as slitting perforated coils. Efficient coil to coil processing can be carried out on coils

Positive feedback from the Blechexpo in Stuttgart

The last Blechexpo can be definitely be judged a success for SCHÄFER Perforated Metal, as its latest facade projects on residential buildings and sports aroused especially great interest. And, in this respect, the 20 m2 stand shared with EMW generated significant synergies.

For modern facade projects, steel is no longer the material of choice, as architects are now increasingly discovering the aesthetic potential of aluminium. The many different materials and great variety of perforation patterns mean highly individual designs can be realised by using perforated metal sheets as facade cladding.

The German Consumer Ministry’s DLG* awards are the most prestigious in the German food industry. The awards for brewe-ries were presented for the 6th time in 2013 – and for the 6th time, the traditional brewers “Störtebeker Braumanufaktur” were among the winners. No other German brewery has won this award more often. The beer spe-cialities of these north German brewers are also have great appeal on the international market. Brewed with high quality ingredients according to old brewing traditions, their beers have already won awards at the Euro-pean Beer Star and the World Beer Cup.

On 216 m2 of exhibition stand space, SCHÄFER Container Systems put on an impressive show at the beverage industry’s leading international trade fair, drinktec, from 16th. to 20th. September in Munich. As the KEG sector's leading inno-vators, SCHÄFER was also the main spon-sor of this year's Beer Sommelier World Championships, which were held at the drinktec. The main focus of conversation at the stand was the great range of solutions for using beverage containers (KEGs) as brand ambassadors for brewers and other beve-rage producers. A further highlight from the extensive range were products from the ECO KEG family. ECO KEGs are fitted with top and bottom rings of UV stabilised polypropylene, which makes them up to 36 % lighter than 100 % steel KEGs and so allows a load increase of approximately 6 % in a 40 foot container. Another logi-

The motivated SCHÄFER trade fair team looking forward to welcoming visitors

stics benefit is the shock-absorber effect of the elastic polypropylene rings, which protects the KEGs from impact damage if they are dropped. The rings are produced in various colours and can be provided with embossed prin-ting and in-mould labelling on customer request, to put across the manufacturer’s or brewer’s brand identity. Using labels, stickers, silk screening, laser printing or electro-chemical signature, a logo can also be applied to the stainless steel body. The ECO KEG’s special design, for which it won the IF Design Award, means that much less material is used than for conven-tional 100 % steel KEGs. This sustainable system therefore makes a contribution to resource-saving manufacturing. Redu-cing energy and resource requirements through product innovations and opti-mised operating procedures also cuts operating costs at the same time.

on its flavour and quality, stringent qua-lity standards were applied in the choice of beer barrels. Marketing boss Karsten Triebe remembers: “After talks with a number of partners in the industry, our former technical manager Günther Lange made the decision to select one particular high-quality supplier – and that was SCHÄFER.“

At SCHÄFER, just like at Störtebeker Brauma-nufaktur, every single manufacturing stage is checked and tested right up to the final inspection. For both companies, consistent high quality is the top priority. The Stralsund enterprise has been a customer of SCHÄFER Container Systems since 1990 and has so far purchased a total of 11,460 KEGs. Both PLUS KEGs of 20, 30 and 50 litres as well as 30 and 50 litre steel KEGs are mainly used. A significant reason for this long term loyalty to SCHÄFER lies in the design possibilities the KEGs offer, reveals Karsten Triebe: ”They have given us the opportunity to make a clear brand differentiation in our draught beer containers. Being able to use the entire sur-face enabled us to put our design aspiration into effect.”For Karsten Triebe, the elaborately designed red PLUS-KEGs with the Störtebeker logo are the perfect supplement for their marketing concept: ”For us, branding doesn’t stop at the bottle. Containers like these barrels are not just load carriers that have to meet cer-tain technical standards. They actually come into contact with our sales agents, partners and customers and so have an important part to play in communicating our brand to the market.”

Stirring it well

Stirring units are not only used to mix different ingredients, but also where-ver media are homogenised or have to be kept homogenous. In the food and drinks and pharmaceuticals industries, in chemical and pharmaceutical process engineering and in the manufacturing of paints and lac-quers, primary products need to be stirred and mixed intensively. And the innovative Visco Jet stirring system does this particu-larly economically and efficiently. To achieve this, the system uses agitators in the form of open ended cones which mix the media thoroughly in a very short space of time. Due to the build up of dynamic pressure at the cone inflow and acceleration at the outflow, turbulent flows are generated which spread through the entire mixture by means of their own momentum. This way a low amount of energy is used at low speeds. This enables Visco Jet to mix fruit and grain mashes, natu-ral hops, flavourings, yeasts as well as liquid and powder concentrates highly efficiently, and yet at the same time very gently. Con-sequently, the system has proved very suc-cessful in the production of fruit juices, beer, lifestyle and convenience beverages, but also in the homogenisation of dairy drinks, milk-shakes and drinking yogurts.SCHÄFER Container Systems also installs Visco Jet stirring systems in its containers. The pro-ducts in question often have be kept at a certain temperature to prevent them from curdling, a requirement SCHÄFER Container Systems met some time ago with the launch of its heatable IBCs. And the stirring units from Visco Jet are an ideal supplement. By pooling their competencies in this partner-ship, these two highly specialised companies have opened up new sales potential in the food, beverage and pharmaceuticals sectors.

Visco Jet stirring units in stainless steel IBCs from SCHÄFER Container Systems guarantee highest quality

For the best possible taste!

Under the name SLC, SCHÄFER Con-tainer Systems supply aseptic stainless steel containers of up to 1000 litres in volume. On request, customer specific volumes can also be supplied. The containers have an easy-to-clean design and are also vacuum resistant. Their high level of pressure resistance enable the containers to be steam-sterilises, making them completely germ-free. Food ingredients, such as fruit purees, beverage bases, liquid seasonings, sauces, whey and liquid egg pro-ducts can therefore be filled, transported and stored aseptically. These stainless steel contai-ners (500-1,000 litres) are ideally suited to use in the beverage and brewery environment as bung containers or storage tanks, dosing or mixing containers. The use of high-grade stain-less steel 1.4301 / 1.4404 makes these contai-ners extremely durable and corrosion resistant. SLCs can be supplied with either a bayonet or

a bolted (screw) top, can be transported with all usual forklift vehicles and are stackable. For this, customers can choose between profile

and round-tube base frames. The manhole cover is fitted with a TÜV-approved excess pressure valve and a CO2 valve.

There’s scarcely another field in which training is as important as in the fire ser-vice. Regular practice is needed to ensure that when there is a fire, every single move is perfect. However, it is extremely difficult to simulate a large large-scale blaze realisti-cally. At the end of 2012, the city of Frankfurt am Main opened one of the most innovative centres for fire simulation. In future, the Fire and Rescue Training Centre (FRTC) is to pro-vide important impulses for fire fighting and civil protection in the Frankfurt region and beyond. The new facility was erected on the site of the Frankfurt fire department according to the plans of the Siegen company kplan AG. With seminar rooms, a “real fire” training hall, and a tunnel simulation unit, the FRTC has very realistic training facilities for fire fighters. For training in the tunnel, there are even two genuine underground train wagons available. Due to flood damage in the rolling stock manufacturing works in Bautzen, two of the latest generation underground train carriages

were damaged. These have now been put to good use for real-life training purposes. In the assessment of Frankfurt City Council, the number of fires is falling, but those that do break out are increasingly complex and difficult to bring under control. The growing dependence of all walks of life on computers and telecommunications is playing a signi-ficant role in this development. A blaze that takes out a data centre can quickly become a full-scale catastrophe as networks fail – espe-cially as the control centre of the fire brigade itself is also reliant on these means of com-munication. With this new FRTC building, constructed by the general contractors Faber & Schnepp GmbH & Co. KG from Gießen, Frankfurt is therefore pursuing a multi-track strategy. The building not only improves training for fire service personnel but also houses a data centre for the city council administration that was designed by LSPlan in Siegen. Here, the entire city council IT system is mirrored so that all functions remain in operation, if there’s

ever a malfunction in the main data centre. Contributing to the reliable and economical operation of the data centre are 20 LOOPUS side coolers from SCHÄFER IT-Systems, coo-ling 50 server racks. All additional equip-ment, such as power strips and cable guiding clamps were supplied by SCHÄFER, too. The scope of the contract, which SCHÄFER won in a public tender, also included three aisle enclosures, which ensure the strict separation of the warm and cold air streams inside the data centre. This guarantees energy-efficient cooling for the servers to prevent things in the data centre on the new fire brigade facilities from hotting up too much.

Today, failsafe IT infrastructure is essential for civil protection programmes.

That's why the city of Frankfurt am Main has integrated a second data centre in

its new fire service training complex.

Storing the sun

The sun provides clean energy, but can’t simply be switched on and off. The surplus energy generated on sunny days (summer), must be stored so that it can be used when needed, such as at night or in the winter. Fin-ding such storage solutions are an essential pre-condition to covering our entire energy needs from renewable sources. There are a range of companies supplying battery, buffer or storage cabinets that store

Today, photovoltaic systems are a good way of generating electricity privately. Unfortunately, solar electricity

is often generated when no-one can use it, so large amounts go unused in the private households that generate it:

during the day, there’s no-one at home and in the evenings when demand is highest, it’s no longer available.

Storing solar energy is one of the greatest challenges posed by Germany's change in energy policy.

Industrial housings from SCHÄFER support innovative solutions for this problem.

the electricity generated by solar plants during the day, so that it can be made avai-lable in the mornings and evenings. These are compact cabinet systems which not only accommodate the actual batteries, but also a great deal of electronic equipment, which checks and controls the PV system on the roof and the energy consumption in the house. This way, the electricity is not only produced ecologically but also used efficiently, making

it possible to operate a house self-sufficiently, in terms of its electricity use. Besides small, lightweight cabinets for private households, which are nevertheless very resi-lient due to their robust design, there are also larger systems for companies. Industrial com-panies in particular need very strong storage cabinets for large battery capacities because of their high energy needs. SCHÄFER Industrial Solutions manufactures cabinets that provide a secure housing for these intelligent storage components. The cabinet design is so compact that they can be transported in one piece and only have to be fitted with the electrical components and wiring once they arrive on site. Compared to a frame design sent as a flat-pack (i.e. in pieces), this approach not only makes handling more convenient, it’s also better value for money as it saves a lot of assembly time. This way SCHÄFER Industrial Solutions is helping to advance the transition to renewable energies. It is of course possible to order the flat pack version on request, which is often the choice of customers who need to assemble the cabi-net in limited spaces or locations which are not easily accessible.

New: PC cabinet from SCHÄFER

Clever and compact

In our private and business lives, the triumphant advance of smartphones and tablets continues unabated. The first mobile-based solutions for controlling production machines and monitoring warehouse logi-stics are already available. But for many appli-cations, the good old PC is still indispensible. The benefits include displaying complex con-tents on a large screen, the convenience of entering information by keyboard and, above all, the protection of the device from outside influences on production lines, for instance. The SCHÄFER PC cabinet combines optimum protection with maximum operating com-fort. The SCHÄFER cabinet has a particularly space-saving design, with a depth of only 40 cm, as the PC is installed sideways. This enables classical PCs to be accommodated in small spaces. The monitor housing is big enough for 21 inch flat screen monitors and the cabinet's height of 1.70 metres enables operators to work comfortably standing.

Robust, space-saving and often mobile. This is what computers for use in production

and storage facilities have to be. The PC cabinet from SCHÄFER helps to meet these

demands.

As less metal is used for the PC cabinet com-pared with conventional solutions, it has all the benefits of a robust steel cabinet with an excellent price/performance ratio. Strong castors give it the required mobility and the passive venting system ensures the PC can work perfectly, even in an “unpleasant atmosphere”. The cabinet is available in two versions: with a keyboard tray or with a durable melamine-coated work top. At SCHÄFER SHOP, custo-mers can choose from a range of table tops and accessories to put together their own individual solution.

Social commitment

Aid for Romania from the Siegerland Mid November saw the members of

the Schäfer family coming together for a special kind of family gathering on the Pfan-nenberg: packing packages was the order of the day! The background is a tradition the owner families of the SCHÄFER GRUPPE have kept up for years. Together, donations are collected and used to buy food, toys, clothes and school things for Romania's children in homes and for other people in need. Wrap-

ped as Christmas presents, the packages are then transported to Romania by a haulage firm close to Neunkirchen, which has been actively involved in helping Romania for many years, and then distributed on arrival by aid workers. In addition, the family sup-ports a child care home, which provides a great number of children and teenagers with a happy home.

On August 1st. 2013, the SCHÄFER WERKE were very pleased to welcome the new trainees and apprentices to the Pfan-nenberg site. Six commercial trainees and eight industrial apprentices were selected from numerous applicants and they can now start their training at SCHÄFER. There had already been a very informative meeting with the trainees on July 31st. 2013, to which parents were also warmly invited, which gave everyone the opportunity to get to know each other. The day was a great suc-cess and both parents and prospective trai-nees really enjoyed the guided tour of the production facilities, as this helped to free them of their understandable nerves before taking their first steps into a new future.
