DEAR FRIENDS, The past fiscal year has been filled with unexpected challenges, unparalleled opportunities and, above all, the unwavering reminder of how much can be ac- complished when our community comes together to achieve a common goal.
In August, we experienced one of the most horrific natural disasters in Tex- as history when Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the Gulf Coast. Even as homes and businesses—including vet-erinary clinics—were being damaged and in some cases utterly destroyed, Texas veterinarians, their staff and mem- bers of the public worked around the clock to ensure that as many animals as possible had a safe refuge from the storm and received necessary medical care. The out-pouring of generosity from you and animal lovers around the country enabled the Texas Veteri-nary Medical Foundation (TVMF) to provide aid and assist veterinarians as they cared for these displaced animals.
The past fiscal year also provided new opportunities for the expansion of the TVMF PALS (Pets Assisting the Lives of Seniors) program. We are pleased to report the TVMF PALS program ex-panded to two new metro areas—Abilene and Houston—during the past year. This program expansion is critical to meeting the growing needs of homebound community members and their companion animals. More than 1,000 pets remain on the wait list, but TVMF is commit-ted to growing this program to meet that need so that pets on the wait list will have access to the medical care and medicines they need to live long, happy and healthy lives.
In January, TVMF celebrated a milestone anniversary—40 years of service within our Texas community. It is difficult to put into words the impact this organization has had on the health and well-being of animals across Texas over the past four decades. The Foundation’s history is rich with impact, and I am deeply honored to be a part of its future. As we continue to expand our programs and face new challenges, our work—and your support—has never been more im-portant. I hope you enjoy reading about our shared achieve- ments in 2017-2018, and I look for-ward to what this new year will bring.

When Ms. Robinson, a TVMF PALS client, made the difficult decision to move back to California after her significant other died, she wanted to take her cat, Daisy, with her. But when she tried to board the bus with Daisy, her pet was denied, and Ms. Robinson had to leave her in the care of friends as she departed for Cali- fornia. Not knowing what to do, Ms. Robinson turned to the PALS pro- gram for help.
TVMF PALS partner veterinarian and TVMA member Dr. Palvino of Austin Vet Hospital (AVH) donated the cost
of the domestic travel certificate and Daisy’s boarding at AVH while travel arrangements were being made. One volunteer helped with Daisy’s travel arrangements and payment while another altered her travel plans to fly with Daisy on a direct flight to Los Angeles. On June 28, Daisy and Ms. Robinson were reunited! Daisy has settled in at her new home and enjoys sleeping on the couch and following Ms. Robinson everywhere. Ms. Rob- inson is thrilled to have Daisy back home and is so thankful for the TVMF and Meals on Wheels (MOW) veterinarians, volunteers and staff who went above and beyond to make this reunion possible!
Thank you to our corporate community partners Antech, Idexx and Boeh- ringer Ingelheim Animal Health for their continued support to help make this program possible.
TVMF PALS PROGRAM DISASTER RELIEF
When Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August 2017, veterinarians across the state immediately sprang into action to help their commu- nities. Dr. Kerry Cline of Dr. Kerry’s PETVET in Conroe, Texas, kayaked through a flooded Houston-area neighborhood to rescue stranded ani- mals. Dr. Dennis W. Jenkins of Santa Fe Equine Associates rescued and treated horses and ponies that were stranded or injured by the storm. In Houston, Dr. Tina Han of My Doorstep Vet traveled with her mobile clinic to treat pets that had evacuated to church shelters with their own- ers. These veterinarians, and many others, received grant funding from TVMF to assist them as they provided medical care to animals affected by Hurricane Harvey.
We know Texans are a resilient bunch, but the long-lasting impact of Hur- ricane Harvey has been lessened by the support and care our neighbors and the TVMF community continue to lend to hurricane victims—human and animal alike. At the very core of these efforts is the essence of what it means to be a community. Thank you for your part in helping us to pre- serve the human-animal bond within the community we all call home.
RUSK VETERINARY ASSISTANCE GRANTS
Jilly is a beloved toy poodle belonging to Gloria K. Last fall, Gloria no- ticed that Jilly wasn’t feeling well. She was eating less and had lost en- ergy. A visit to the vet confirmed that Jilly had lost weight and serious dental issues that were causing her extreme discomfort and affecting her quality of life. In order to resolve these issues, Jilly would need major dental surgery. Gloria lives on a fixed income and was already struggling to pay for her own medical bills. She could not afford dental surgery, but was unwilling to let Jilly suffer. Gloria’s daughter set up a GoFundMe for Jilly, and Jilly’s veterinarian – Dr. Sheffield of Wimberley Veterinary Clinic – helped Gloria apply for a Rusk Veterinary Assistance Grant. With the help of TVMF, Jilly was able to get the dental surgery that she desper- ately needed, and she is back to being a playful, happy, dog. Gloria is so thankful for the grant that she received, and describes Dr. Sheffield as “her and Jilly’s superhero!”
