FROM THE PRESIDENT: YES, WE PLAY FOOTBALLBy John Guccion, SUCO Founder, President
During the Syracuse University basketball season, there is little
doubt that we are all united under one cloak of Otto-shaded
Orange. But an interesting dynamic happens in Columbus when
the incoming Scarlet and Gray autumn shades slowly, but surely,
eradicate the summer sun. When it comes to football, there is no
doubt in this town that The Ohio State University Football
Buckeyes are King. Even, sometimes, among our own Syracuse
alumni.
Sports fans overall are complex characters when it comes to
loyalty. Some stand by one team, no matter what. Others wear
half n' half shirts. Even our own leadership is divided. One of our
club officers openly vows that there is no other priority than Ohio
State on game day. Another pledges undying devotion to the
Orange, swearing off the Buckeyes. Orange football's place onone's priority scale here is often determined by whether the Ohio
State football culture is persuasive enough to sway you into its
possession.
No, we are not Ohio State in terms of the year in, year out
national title contention. We have had our ups and downs for

sure, most recently shifting from 6-3 in nine bowl games and four
Big East Conference titles during the 14-year Paul Pasqualoni
era (Remember that?) to opening at Akron just a few short years
ago after the Greg Robinson coaching debacle to get theprogram back on track.
During my college years ('92-'96), I watched Syracuse play Ohio State, Texas, Miami
(Fla.), and Oklahoma live in the Carrier Dome. I was also in the stands for the Orange's
2010 season opener AT Akron.
But always remember that SU does have real football history -
and don't let Buckeye Fan or anyone else tell you otherwise. A
catalog of great players have donned Syracuse Orange, includingErnie Davis, Jim Brown, John Mackey, Floyd Little, Larry Csonka,
Art Monk, Don McPherson, Donovan McNabb, Marvin Harrison,
and Dwight Freeney. High profile bowl appearances were a
regularity from the late 1980s through the early 2000s. And now
there are signs of resurgence with two respectable bowl wins in
the last three years and a share of the Big East regular season
title in our final season with the league. It's just easy to not care
about all of that when you live in Columbus.
Depending on when you attended SU, especially if it was duringthe Robinson atrocity, your appreciation for Orange tainted
pigskin may have little to no foundation. Or it may just be
secondary because of the mental and physical condition of your
current geographic residence or ties to an additional alma mater.
But as we step forward into this ACC era, I encourage you not to
forget your roots.
