The City of Greater Sudbury’s Children Services Section, in partnership with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS), Collège Boréal, Cambrian College and Child Care Resources (CCR) are very pleased to welcome you to the 1st Sudbury Early Learning & Child Care Symposium.

The theme of the symposium is “Power Up” with Energize, Connect and Move being the sub-themes. The intent is to energize child care programs, create an opportunity to share with others, and motivate child care professionals.

The symposium is a token of our appreciation for all the hard work the Early Learning & Child Care Practioners/Educators in our communities do on a daily basis.

We look forward to seeing you at the symposium, and we hope to see you at the Black and White Gala and be inspired by our keynote speaker Gisèle Guénard during a social evening and an opportunity to network with your peers.

Workshops Session 1 INFANT DEVELOPMENT - NEWBORN TO 18 MONTHSDevelopmental milestones from newborn to 18 months; when to refer to specialized services and communicating with parents throughout the process.■ Presenter: Brenda Miller■ Capacity: unlimited

STORYTELLING, PUPPETRY AND SONGIn this experiential session, participants will explore some basic drama principles and discuss how to infuse “make believe” into the classroom setting easily. We’ll also manipulate puppets, enacting songs and movement while exploring the potential for this incredible creative piece to be implemented in the daily teaching repertoire. Everyone will be set up for success and an extensive booklet of resources will be given to each puppeteer/musician as part of this workshop.■ Presenter: Dr. Jan Buley■ Capacity: Max 30

ABORIGINAL NATIVE CULTURE AND PROGRAMMINGThe medicine wheel is a basic tool that can be used in our daily life. There are many different aspects to the wheel such as four directions, seasons, colors, medicines, stages of life and races of mankind. The presentation will explain how to incorporate the medicine wheel in a daycare environment.■ Presenter 1: Sandie Manitowabi■ Presenter 2: Liz Hamilton■ Capacity: unlimited

ERGONOMICS, CHILDREN AND WORKWorking in a daycare is physically, emotionally and mentally challenging. Many workers simply work their shift and go home not realizing that any pain and discomfort that they feel is related to their work tasks. This presentation will teach about ergonomics, common injuries in daycares, and risk factors in the workplace. The presentation will then discuss safe work practices and proper lifting so that playing and educating children can be done safely. ■ Presenter: Steve MacDonald■ Capacity: unlimited

THE WORKING GENERATIONSThe Gaia and Echo generations are the tribal generations; the Bust and X generations are the contract generations and the Boomer and Senior generations the tenured generations. Why might this be? Do you think the work ethic of these three broad cohort groups is the same? Why or why not?■ Presenter: Michael Kelly■ Capacity: unlimited

CHARACTER, SPIRIT AND PASSION WELLNESS / SELF-CAREDespite the obvious differences in all of our physical natures, we possess amazingly similar spiritual plights. What people are on the inside reflects what you see on the outside and vice versa. This workshop session will focus on the spirituality ("self") and physicality ("care") of people – that part of the brain where your character, your spirit and your passions live.■ Presenter: Dr. Chris Mazzuchin■ Capacity: unlimited

PROFESSIONALISM IN ECEA representative from the College of ECE Transitional Council will share with participants timely information on how to register for the College and voting procedures. A representative from the Association of Early Childhood Educators Ontario will discuss the important supporting role your professional association will play now that a regulatory body is in place.■ Presenter 1: Christine Forsyth ■ Presenter 2: Kelly Massaro-Joblin■ Capacity: unlimited
