Program Description This four-day conference covers issues facing professionals concerned about SIDS and other sudden infant deaths. It is also for those providing care for infants at increased risk for sudden death. There are sessions on the latest research findings and practice guidelines. There are lectures, discussion sessions, panels and article reviews. This is truly a participant structured conference. Pre-Conference Research Session Wednesday September 26, 3:00-5:00 This accredited session is being held to discuss the current research projects in which AASPP is participating along with other’s research in progress. Everyone is welcomed to attend this accredited session. Target Audience This annual conference was developed for neonatologists, pediatric pulmonologists, pediatric neurologists, nurses, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals who have an interest in sudden infant death and sleep disorders. Banquet The banquet will be from 7-10 pm on Thursday night at the Naples Beach Hotel. A banquet ticket is included with each paid registration. Guest tickets can be purchased for an additional $75. A DJ will play for your listening and dancing pleasure. CMEs Accreditation This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of the NCH Healthcare System and The American Association of SIDS Prevention Physicians. The NCH Healthcare System is accredited by the Florida Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Credit Designation The NCH Healthcare System designates this live activity for a maximum of 17, AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. 2019 Alfred Steinschneider Memorial Lecturer Jan Marino “Nino” Ramirez, PhD Professor of Pathology, Physiology and Biophysics University of Washington School of Medicine

He is the Associate Director for the Center on Human Development and Disability at the University of Washington, and a member of the Council for Promotions and Appointments at the University of Washington. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Neurophysiology and a Reviewing Editor for the Journal eLife; and he is the Chair for the Hypoxia Interest Group of the American Physiological Society. Dr. Ramirez is an expert in the neuronal control of breathing and his work spans from bench to bedside. He has a specific interest in sudden infant death syndrome, Mitochondrial disease, Rett Syndrome, Familial Dysautonomia and epilepsy. His work combines animal models and clinical studies to gain a mechanistic understanding into the physiological events leading to sudden death, sleep disordered breathing and dysautonomia. He published more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and has continuously been funded by the National Institute of Health since 1996. Conference Learning Objectives 1. Discuss 2 studies linking the brainstem to SIDS. 2. Describe how scene investigations have changed diagnoses

of sleep related deaths. 3. Explain information used by Medical Examiners to help

distinguish SIDS/undetermined from suffocation. 4. Describe two projects whose aims are to increase safe sleep. 5. Discuss the changes in statistics of suffocation infant deaths. 6. Explain the predominant way co-sleeping infants differ

pathologically from other sudden infant deaths. 7. Describe how best to assure adequate oxygenation in the

premature infant. 8. Discuss how caffeine affects the outcome of severely

premature babies. 9. Discuss 2 ways maternity ward sudden infant deaths can be

reduced. 10. List 2 major SIDS issues facing nurses and RTs today.

Professor Ramirez is the Director of the Center for Integrative Brain Research at the Seattle Children’s Research Institute, and a Professor for Neurological Surgery and Pediatrics as well as an Adjunct Professor for Pathology, Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
