Abstract

The de ta on tapioca starch process i 1:g, process

water consumption, end amount of waste water efflue~t were

collected from 5 tapioca starch factories. A proceEs flow

diagram for the tapioca starch industry was established,

the det~iled material balance for each factory was

presented and compared. The starch losses from the process

were between 13-23% (total loss included starch content

unrecnvered in the residual pulp end fibre>. Total process

water consumptions were between 12-21 ma/ton starch, where

the maximum consumption was in the extractor u1dts. Total

combined waste water was between 15-23 m3/ton starch. The

waste water from the decanter had starch content in the

range of 1.6 2.4% 1 which

compared with effluent

the highest starch content

other units. Among the

factories

decanter

under investigation, 3 out of 5 factories had

units in the processes. However, only 2

factories operated the decanter during this investifation.

It was nontheless unconclusive that the decanter had any

effects on process water consumption end efficiency of

starch production.
