Fundraising This year we are raising funds to redevelop and enhance our adventure playground equipment at the front of the school. The profits from the fundraising events shown below will all be directed to this project. We have collected quotations and concepts plans from various playground design companies. The Buildings and Grounds Committee, School Council and the Junior School Council have been discussing this topic including ideas and possibilities for some time. We anticipate that the redevelopment will cost approximately $120,000 to $150,000. In addition, Voluntary Contributions from 2019 and 2020 will also be directed to the playground redevelopment.

We have had terrific support from many in our community, whilst the key organisers listed above played a pivotal role; each event had numerous community members supporting and working tirelessly for our school. At this stage we plan to commence work on this project early next year.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Results NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skill in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals about student achievement which can be used to inform teaching and learning programs. NAPLAN tests provide point-in-time information regarding student progress across Australia in literacy and numeracy and are intended to complement teacher judgment and the wide range of formal and informal testing programs that are already used in schools. As with all single assessments, NAPLAN test results are not intended to be used in isolation from other school-based assessment programs. At Hampton, we ensure that, along with whole-school planning for delivery of the Victorian Curriculum, a variety of assessment tasks is used to assess student learning including: one-on-one Numeracy and Literacy Interviews Running Records computer based testing programs such as Essential Assessments standardised testing in both literacy and numeracy topic based pre and post-tests peer assessments written self-reflections construction and use of assessment rubrics anecdotal records presentations of learning in a variety of formats. The Education Committee, School Council and staff will review this data over the next couple of weeks and a summary of the findings will be included in the newsletter early in Term 4. Teachers will carefully analyse the NAPLAN data and compare the results both individually and collectively to previous NAPLAN results and other assessments utilised in the school. Individual NAPLAN reports have been distributed to children earlier this week. If parents have any queries regarding the results, please make a time to discuss these with the classroom teacher, Tom Prendergast the NAPLAN Coordinator or me. Initiative, Sustainable Practice and making a difference to our environment The Grade 4s have been learning about their carbon footprint and thinking about this from a philosophical and practical standpoint. They embarked on a joint venture on Tuesday with the 111 children making a concerted effort to clean the yard, analyse the type of rubbish collected and show a commitment to keeping our space free of litter.

Lily Smith and Tasha Nhean from 4D who are pictured above, enthusiastically led this process ad inspired their buddies to genuinely lend a hand. Well done to Lily and Tasha and all of the Grade 4 students! Sunsmart Policy Reminder We still have a small number of children who are not bringing their hats to school; this limits their play. Parents are asked to remind their children to bring their hats to school each day.

Assembly Thank you to 1A who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly last week. Congratulations go to Lily in 3A for playing ‘Rondo’ on the harp. Lily performed with confidence and really impressed the audience with her sensitive interpretation of this lovely piece of music. Willow Sutherland from 4A presented a well-crafted and persuasive speech on sustainable practice and specifically on reducing the use of plastic. Willow carefully researched and rehearsed her speech which the audience appreciated. Academic Excellence Congratulations go to the following students who received academic excellence awards at assembly this week. Ella Dumayne in FB for making excellent improvement in reading and writing and

showing a quiet determination to do her best in all areas of school life Jenson Docker in FB for showing an enthusiastic approach to all number activities,

demonstrating a capacity to think quickly in mathematical situations.

Practising Reading and Writing

Thomas Parker from 1C has made excellent progress with his reading lately. He has worked with Mrs Van Pelt earlier this term and has continued his learning trajectory by regularly reading his books at school and at home every night. He also likes to practise his writing and spelling at home and clearly shows a positive work ethic and a determination to be doing his best. Well done Thomas!

State Success Returns to Hampton Primary School

It certainly seems that Hampton Primary School has demonstrated continual strength in their interschool sports – especially when it comes to the round-ball version of football. On Friday September 6, 2019, the Hampton Primary School Boys Team won the SSV State Title for the second time in a row. More amazingly, over the course of 10 years, Hampton has visited the State championships on nine occasions, winning the state title an unprecedented eight times – five with the boys and three with the girls. No other primary school in Victoria has had such comparable success.

Hampton lost all their key players from the 2018 State winning team who have moved on to high school. But the remaining players from that team picked up the slack and focused themselves on another tilt at the championship! The players worked hard and made commitment to do many extra training sessions and take as many opportunities to work as a team as they could muster. The season started and after going through the district level unbeaten, the team progressed to Divisional and Regional competition. The team’s ‘never-say-die’ attitude held them in good stead as they came back twice from being down a goal to win both the divisional and regional level – earning the right to represent the Southern Metropolitan Region at the State Finals. So Friday arrived and the team assembled at the Darebin International Sports Complex in Thornbury. The first game on Friday was played against a strong Shepparton school and after a very tight contest Hampton earned the three points with a 2-0 win. The second game was against Gippsland Grammar, who struggled against the Hampton team – who put together a wonderful, unrelenting team effort – winning 7-0. The third game was against the champions from the East – Pleasant Street Primary School, who were duly dispatched 4-0. This meant that for the second year in a row, Hampton would play off in the final. The opponent would be Aitken College – a large school from the West with a strong sporting culture. Aitken were a very strong and physical team, who also boasted state representatives. Within five minutes they had scored first, but being behind just made the Hampton students work harder. They managed a score from sheer persistence and the game, at half time, was locked at 1-1. The second half began and within minutes the fitness of the Hampton team started to shine through. Aitken started to struggle as Hampton kept to their structure. Eventually, after a brilliant left foot shot, Hampton forged ahead 2-1. Aitken became desperate to equalise and threw everything at Hampton, but the defence held firm until the final whistle – seeing Hampton PS become the 2019 State Winners! It was a great team effort and each player contributed throughout. This summary was written by Rob, the team’s coach. My sincere congratulations go the team: Kristoff Hoffman, Zac McKenna, Will Muller, Tristan Todman, Mitch Glass, Liam Kinnaird, Sorley Maxwell, Baxter Moss, Ollie Peat, Dylan Ricketts, Leon Scaunich, William Smith, Rocco Theuma, Paddy Wilson, Harry Wolfenden and Giddy Ziesing. The boys trained hard and followed the instructions and game plan provided by their very experienced coach. Our school is very fortunate indeed to have the passionate, highly skilled and inspirational Rob Giabardo who ensured the boys were thoroughly prepared, confident and ready for the challenges that a state championship affords. Spring Planting

Last week we had a visit from Woolworths from Hampton Street who were keen to create a connection with our school and promote greening our local area and protecting our environment. The group pictured worked with compressed soil and added water then planted 4 seeds in biodegradable packets. The children planted herbs and salad vegetables which will eventually be used in the canteen lunches. Once the seeds sprout the seedling will be transferred to garden beds out near the Snack Shack and watered regularly. We hope to be eating them later in Term 4. The garden box provided is made from 25,000 recycled plastic bags; this was provided by Woolworths and courtesy of Redcycle. We extend our thanks to Woolworths for their interest and support shown to our school.

Special thanks go to Mary Cole the Snack Shack Manager who organised this.

Last weekend Lara Unkles in 4C competed in the National Taekwondo Championships at the Gold Coast in Queensland. Lara competed in the 12 years and under category. In addition, weight was a factor; she competed in the Under 31 kilograms section. Lara had two fights against opponents from Canberra, she won both comfortably. Highlights from this special competition day for Lara included: I had an injury to my foot prior to the competition and was a little surprised on one level that I won. My foot was quite sore during both fights. I tried to ignore the pain and concentrate on doing my best. I did feel a bit special and proud because lots of people came up to support me on the championship day. Also, some of friends face timed and were able to watch both fights from Melbourne.

Winning and celebrating with my Club ‘Notorious’. Congratulations Lara! Sue Knight Principal

Child Safe Standards Continuing on from earlier newsletters I am providing a summary of another of the Child Safe Standards for our community. Child Safe Standard 3 is our Code of Conduct which the Education Sub Committee reviewed this week in order to distil the key elements of the Standard for staff and parents to be aware of and act upon in an appropriate manner. The key elements of the standard are to; state our commitment as a community to the safety and wellbeing of children protect children and reduce any opportunities for child abuse or harm. confirm we are all required to comply with the Code of Conduct in all school

situations. assist in understanding how to avoid or better manage risky behaviours and

situations listen and respond to the views and concerns of students, particularly if they are

telling you that they or another child has been abused or they are worried about their safety or the safety of another child.

Clarify that all volunteers, including parents are required to have working with children’s check with the exception of events held outside of school hours.

Make clear that photographing and videoing a child in a school environment takes place within school policy boundaries or where required for duty of care purposes
