Marshland Punch 2417-S born 6 March 1981

Imported from the U.K. to Ontario, Canada 13 Dec 1982 by Hugh Grant out of Rowhedge Prudence EM 28026 by Marshland Ben ES8493.Marshland Punch was one of the most influencial stallions on the modern North American Suffolk Punch horses. He was owned by three folks on three corners of the continent. Ontario, Washington State and Alabama. According to the ASHA studbook he sired 43 registered offspring with many different mares throughout his breeding career. He was in Ontario for 10 years, Washington state for 5 years and Alabama until his passing. He has many, many descendents in North America today. He was a very correct moving horse and of considerable substance at maturity and a good nature. “I owned and stood for stud one of his sons, Marshall of Arcadia Canada with good results as a sire, kind, correct moving, easily trained horse, dark chestnut whole colored red.” ~ Jason Rutledge

Rudy was born and died in the same field here at Ridgewind. He was hand bred until 9 year old and was turned out with mares at that age about the same time he went to work full time in the woods and on the farm with our teams. He was started single and did multiple jobs before being worked beside another horse. We used a jockey stick for about two logs and took it off and just made him mind. He sired several great mares that have produced wonderful offspring. He has one surviving entire son Red Cedar of Po Boy’s farm. Rudy was about 16/2 and weighed 1780 lbs. in working shape, wore a 26 inch collar and number 5 Anvil brand draft shoe front and rear. He wa our main horse in harness and at the breeding stanchion for many years. We pulled competitively with him, winning the State Fair of Virginia crossing 9,000 pounds. We used him for weddings, parades and lots of public events. He passed his kind and tractable disposition to his descendents. He was a very attractive horse with an exceptional head and eye. He was Grand Champion Draft Stallion over all breeds at the oldest continuous horse show in America at Upperville, Va. 2004

Ironside Jack 2293-SJunaiata’s Lee x Oakleaf Dee Dee - Foaled 4/10/69 - Deceased 1992

Ironside Jack was an incredibly well traveled stallion, he had owners from California to Maine and several states in between. An interesting piece of his travels is while in Maine he was owned by well known poet, Kate Barnes, of the historic Chimney Farm. A place with significant literary connections, as Kate’s parents were also award winning writers. Jack was reported to be a good looking horse, standing over 16 hands and weighing approximately 1950 pounds. Jason Rutledge described him as very well balanced, with good bone, and large black eyes. Jack sired 33 registered offspring. There is no recollection that he was every broke to work. Mr. Rodney Read does know that at some point he was shown in halter and won reserve champion, at the Western Idaho state fair. Mark Christman, of a representative of Poulin Grain, told me that 30 years ago he was invited by Parker Sanborn, a well known breeder of Percheron horses and Jersey cows at the time to go see a horse with “the best front end he had ever seen.” The horse Parker took Mark to see was Ironside Jack. - Leah Haney

Ashley Taylor Chaffin speaks of how as a kid she used to climb the fence and hang all over him, and he was happy to stand there and soak up the attention from a young girl. Mari Malyski Lintin-Leedy says he would walk down the fence line and follow her daughter to the bus stop in the morning and walk down to meet her when she got off the bus in the afternoon. Jason Rutledge says Jango would work where ever you needed him. He pulled logs as a single and pair, and could be used for pleasure driving. Cumberland’s Jango sired one registered offspring.
