to 14. Age eligibility is determined by the age of thecontestant as of January 1. Proof of age is required. Highschool-age athletes should be advised to check with theirschool athletic directors or their state high school athleticassociations regarding possible eligibility conflicts.

EntriesAll competitors must register using the official Knights ofColumbus Free Throw Championship Entry Form/ScoreSheet (#1598). Proof of age must accompany all entry forms.Preregistration is recommended, but it is not required. Theentry form/score sheet and proof of age must accompanyparticipants through all levels of competition. Your councilnumber must be clearly written on the form. Each youngstermay compete in only one council competition. Winners willprogress to the district, regional and state levels ofcompetition. International champions are chosen on thebasis of state-level results.

Court/EquipmentEach level of competition should be held on any localbasketball court or suitable facility approved by and underthe supervision of a participating Knights of Columbuscouncil.

AGE SPECIFICATIONS(NOTE: The suggested ball sizes for each age group arebased on national recommendations for youthbasketball teams.)

Ages 9, 10, 11 (Boys & Girls Competitions)Use a women’s regulation-size basketball and shootfrom a 12-foot foul line at a 10-foot-high basket.(NOTE: The normal foul line is 15 feet from the basket. Foul lines at 12 feet from the basket for 10-and 11-year-old divisions should be clearly markedwith athletic or masking tape prior to thecompetition.)

AUTHORITY The Knights of Columbus Free ThrowChampionship program will be under the authorityof the state deputy and state youth director. Anyquestions about this program not answered in thisguide should be directed to the appropriate stateofficials or to the Supreme Council Department ofFraternal Services, 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven,CT 06510-3326; Telephone (203) 752-4270, Fax (203) 752-4108.

Judges/Scorers/ReboundersJudges, scorers and rebounders will be selected by theFree Throw Championship chairman at the councillevel, by the district deputy at the district level, and bythe state deputy at the regional and state levels. Therecommended minimum is one judge, two scorers and arebounder at each basket. It is recommended thatvolunteer parents be utilized in age groups other thanthe group(s) in which their child (children) competes.The judge will ensure that each participant receives theproper warm-up tosses and will point out any foul-shooting violations (see Scoring section). All questionswill be resolved by the judges and Free ThrowChampionship chairman. Scorers should refer to thescoring instructions included on the entry form/scoresheet. The rebounder will catch the ball and give to thenext contestant.

ScoringNormal rules of basketball regarding free throws applyfor all levels of competition. Free Throw violationsinclude stepping on or over the line prior to the ballreaching the rim, or shots rebounding off the “out ofbounds” basket support and equipment. Scorers shouldrecord baskets made and missed on each attemptaccording to the instructions on the entry form/scoresheet. It is recommended that multiple scorers beassigned to each basket for scoring accuracy andcomparison. All scores should be verified before the next contestant is allowed to shoot. The use ofvideotape recording of the competition is notrecommended to resolve questions on scoring totals.The judges and scorers and actual entry form/scoresheets should determine final scores.

Competition Levels

Council Level Each contestant receives three warm-uptosses followed by 15 consecutive Free Throw attemptsfrom the appropriate age-designated foul line (see theCourt/Equipment/Age section for proper ball sizes andfoul line distances). To break a tie, contestants take asecond round of five free throws. No warm-up tosses arepermitted for the tie-breaker rounds. Successive roundsof five free throws each continue until a winner emerges.

District, Regional, State Levels Each contestantreceives three warm-up tosses followed by 25 consecutivefree throw attempts from the foul line. To break a tie,contestants take a second round of five free throws. No

Free Throw Championships arefun and easy to conduct. Hereare steps to follow to ensure asuccessful Free ThrowChampionship.

COUNCIL COMPETITION

• Free Throw Championshipsshould never be held on aschool day unless allparticipants are able to attend.

• This could be a goodmembership recruitmentopportunity. Some of the fathersattending your event are likelyto be practical Catholics whoare eligible to join a council.Have one of two Knights fromyour Membership Committeeset up a table for recruiting.Stock it with membershippamphlets and Form 100’s tohand out. To grab theirattention, use a poster such as#4355 E, “In Service To One, InService To All” (available fromin the supply catalog) or set upsome refreshments. Make sureyou get the phone number ofpotential recruits to performadequate follow-up procedures.

The council Free ThrowChampionship chairman should:

• Always use the program’sofficial name: Knights ofColumbus Free ThrowChampionship.

• Order the Knights of ColumbusFree Throw Championship Kit(#FT-KIT) using the order formon page 5 of the Council ReportForms Booklet (#1436) on page 9 of this booklet, or atwww.kofc.org/forms. Completeand submit the form to theDepartment of FraternalServices. Order as early aspossible.

• Set a time and place. Contactparks, schools, communitycenters or youth centers andreserve a basketball court. Asklocal sports teams, colleges oruniversities to work with yourcouncil on the Free ThrowChampionship as part of theircommunity outreach program.While January is the month forconducting a councilcompetition, councils can beflexible and work around theschedules of such teams. Alllocal competitions should bescheduled so that the winnerscan participate in the districtcompetitions.

• Contact the schools in your areato explain the program. Seekpermission of theprincipals/athleticdirectors/superintendents toconduct the program as part oftheir physical education orintramural program, or ask for anendorsement encouragingstudents to participate in thiscommunity sports program. Highschool athletes should bereminded to check with theirstate high school athleticassociation about possibleeligibility conflicts. Contactofficials from the town recreationdepartment or local youthbasketball leagues to promote thecompetition among their players.Teams and schools can holdpreliminary competitions todetermine winners by age groupsto advance to the councilcompetition. Make sure thatentry forms/score sheets aredistributed in advance to theofficials of the leagues or coachesof the teams.

• Display program postersprominently to generateattention and participation. Askto display posters in schools,youth centers, church halls,libraries, Boys & Girls Clubs,

skating rinks, shopping centers,YMCA and YWCA buildings andthe council home. On the posterindicate the name of the contactperson, the date, time andlocation of the competition, anda telephone number to call foradditional information on thecompetition. Supplement theseposters with newspaper ads,radio and TV spots and otherpublicity. Additional posters areavailable at no charge from theSupreme Council office.Preregister contestants wheneverpossible.

• Preregistration will boost thenumber of participants and savetime at the actual event bymaking the competition runquicker and smoother. Distributeentry forms/score sheets toaforementioned locations.Personally deliver entryforms/score sheets to physicaleducation teachers and coacheswhen possible. Try to collect

• Sew-on patches (#FT-P) bearingthe phrase “Knights of ColumbusFree Throw Championship” areavailable from the SupremeCouncil Supply Department.Patches can be ordered inpackages of 25 at a cost of $29 byusing a Requisition Form (#1) orthe coupon on page 9. Thesepatches may be presented toparticipants and/or champions.

• Personalize the sample pressrelease on page 6 by announcingthe council winners and sendcopies to local and diocesannewspapers and radio stations.

• Immediately following yourcouncil’s championship, the grandknight must complete and submitthe Free Throw ChampionshipParticipation Form (#FT-1) foundon page 7 of the Council ReportForms Booklet and included inthis guide as well as the FreeThrow Kit. This feedbackprovides valuable statistics forparticipation and an overallassessment of the program.Include the number ofparticipants in the council’scompetition as well as thenumber who participated in anypreliminary school or leaguecompetitions.

• Provide the entry forms/score sheetsand the proofs of age for the councilwinners to the district deputy forthe district competition. Make sureyour council number is filled in.Inform council competition winnersof the date, time and location of thedistrict competition and any otherlevels of competition to which theyadvance.

• Be sure that a council officialaccompanies council winners to allupcoming competitions as theyadvance. In the event that a winnerin any level cannot participate inthe next level of competition, thesecond-place winner shouldrepresent the area.

These plaquesinclude an engraving plateidentifying the “Knights ofColumbus Free ThrowChampionship” and space forthe winner’s name to beengraved. Plaques should beordered from the Department byusing the order coupon locatedon page 9 of this guide.

• Conduct the competition by therules covered in this booklet.Plan to open the doors an hourbefore the actual event to allowfor the registration of walk-inparticipants. If space allows, letearly visitors take warm-upshots if they wish to do so.Organize entry forms/scoresheets by age and gender. Makea final check of equipment andsee that the regulation-sizebasketballs are available andtemporary foul lines are clearlymarked with non-residue tape.Verify that judges and scorershave been properly advised oftheir duties and responsibilities.Use the entry form/score sheetto record each participant’sscore. This form, and proof ofage, must accompany eachchampion as he or sheprogresses through the higherlevels of competition. All council-level participantsshould shoot their free throwsduring the scheduled hours ofthe competition and under thesame conditions as all othercompetitors. Sample Press ReleaseCONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT

Local K of C to Sponsor Youth Free Throw Championship

All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the(year) Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held(competition date) at (time) at (location).

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winnersprogressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announcedby the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boysand girls 9 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective agedivisions. Last year more than 120,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,600 local competitions.

All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants arerequired to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. For entry forms or additionalinformation contact: (name and telephone number of contact person).

The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization withover 1.8 million members in 15,000 local councils. Last year, Knights donated over 70 millionvolunteer hours and $170 million to charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefittheir church, councils, communities, culture of life, families and youth.

PUBLICIZING YOUR EVENT

One of the best ways to make sure your council’s free throw program is a success is to publicize it. The program must always be referred to as the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

After reserving a basketball court and setting a date for the championship, use the sample press release onthis page to announce the event.

Retype it, double spaced, on council letterhead, filling in the necessary information giving the who, what,when and where of your council’s scheduled Free Throw Championship. Make sure to include the name and phone number of a contact person.

Ask editors to publish a reminder closer to the date of the championship or to list it in the community orweekend calendars. Talk with assignment editors and suggest the championship as a great opportunity for afeature story. Make arrangements for a story about your winners. Personally deliver or send their names,ages and stories, along with clipart logos (available at www.kofc.org/clipart), to the editors of both localnews and sports sections of secular and diocesan newspapers. Send press releases to radio and TV stationsand local cable-access news programs.

Contact local high schools and college athletic departments about the possibility of holding your Free Throw Championship competition prior to a game and then presenting the awards to the champions during halftime. If there is a professional or semiprofessional franchise in your area contact its public relationsoffice to see if arrangements can be made to honor winners of your competition during halftime. Also,approach teams about the possibility of getting players to present awards to your champions. Local sportsteams, including sports other than basketball, may also be willing to donate uniforms, autographed basketballs and other similar items as awards or prizes for your champions.

Knights of Columbus Crown Free Throw Champions

District Competition

(The district level competition is onlyrequired if more than one councilwithin the district participates in theKnights of Columbus Free ThrowChampionship).

Receive district championmedallions (provided at no cost)from the state council at the state’smid-year meeting. The SupremeCouncil provides 12 Olympic-stylemedallions for presentation to thedistrict winners.

Secure a court, select a date for theFebruary district championship andpass on the information to each ofthe councils in your district. Informcouncils of the date and locationwell in advance.

Conduct the district championshipaccording to the rules covered inthis booklet. Organize entryforms/score sheets by age and gender. Use the entry form/scoresheet to record each participant’sscore. This form, and proof of age,must accompany each champion ashe or she progresses through thehigher levels of competition.

Make a final check of equipmentand see that the regulation-sizebasketballs are available and temporary foul lines are clearlymarked with non-residue tape.Instruct the judges and scorers oftheir duties and responsibilities.

All district-level participants shouldshoot their free throws during the scheduled hours of thecompetition and under the sameconditions as all other competitors. No participants shouldbe allowed to attempt their freethrows at a special time, other thanthe scheduled and publicized hoursof competition. Under no

circumstances should a Free ThrowChampionship be held on a schoolday unless all participants are ableto attend. Use the original entryform/score sheet for eachparticipant to record districtcompetition scores. Present thedistrict medallions to thechampions at the end of the event.

Cash or bonds must not be awarded at any level of competition since that may compromise the amateur status ofthe contestant. Send a press releaseto local media sources announcingthe district winners.

Report the results of your districtcompetition to the regional/stateFree Throw Championship chairman and give him the entryforms/score sheets of your champions. Inform your champions of the date and location of the regional/state championship.

Regional/StateCompetition

The Regional/State Free Throw Chairman should:

Order regional/state awards usingthe coupon found on page 9 of thisbooklet, or contact a local supplierfor an appropriate award. Statecouncils are responsible for ordering and presenting awards tothe regional and state winners.

Secure a court, select a date andinform the district deputies andcouncils of the date, time andlocation of the regional/statecompetition. Post this informationon your state website and newsletter.

Conduct the competition accordingto the rules outlined in this booklet.

The state Free ThrowChampionship chairman shall provide the name, address andsponsoring council and state levelscoring information to theSupreme Council office in April onforms provided by the Departmentof Fraternal Services. This scoringinformation will be used to determine the international winners.

International champions are determined on the basis of the best scores from the state competitionssubmitted in each age category. The Supreme Council office will provide the forms to be completedby the state chairman listing the champions, their scores and other important information.

All international champions will be notified by a personal letter of congratulations from SupremeKnight Carl A. Anderson and will receive an international Free Throw Championship trophy commissioned by the Supreme Council and forwarded to the state deputy for presentation.
