TRANSCRIPT

Suggested grade levels 7-12Students will explore strategies that promote personal safety when using the texting-based

social network, Twitter.

Learning Objectives

Students will:• use prior knowledge

about online personal safety to describe personal safety risks that Twitter users may encounter• develop safety strategies

for the use of Twitter

Talk About It

Do you use Twitter? • How? • Why?

Twitter Basics

Twitter is an information network made up of 140-character messages called tweets. It’s an easy way to keep in touch with friends and followers and to discover the latest news related to subjects you care about.

Twitter BasicsEvery time you tweet, the messages are sent to your followers, posted to your profile or via widget to your social network, Web site, or blog, and are searchable on Twitter search.

There are even apps that integrate GPS with Twitter to make a user’s location identifiable. You can also tweet photos.

Following

Following someone on Twitter means that you are subscribing to their tweets as a follower.

A timeline is a Twitter term used to describe a collected stream of tweets listed in real-time order.

Following

When you follow other users, their updates will appear in your home timeline (the view of your Twitter homepage when you logon to Twitter).

Following

Any person you follow also has permission to send you private tweets, called direct messages.

Sign-Up

When someone signs up for a Twitter account, the user provides an e-mail to be associated with the account and creates a representational profile.

Sign-Up

When someone signs up for a Twitter account, the user identifies a Twitter username and unique password.

At this time s/he may provide a profile picture known as an avatar image.

More Basics

Twitter is unlike other social networking sites because most of the communication taking place on it is public and viewable to everyone. (“Public” is the default account setting for tweets.)

More Basics

Most users want to maximize their followers and engagement with their tweets, and want more people to find and follow them.

Since the information posted is public, some of this data may be made available or republished on other Web sites.

Tweet ProtectionUsers have the option of protecting tweets.

• Accounts with protected tweets require manual approval of each and every person who may view that account’s tweets. • Only approved followers can view

tweets made on these accounts.

Activity For the most part, Twitter is fun and safe for its users. However, social media should never be used without exploring potential safety issues.

Now that you have learned some basics about Twitter, consider what you already know about online personal safety and describe at least 5 personal safety risks that Twitter users may encounter.

Activity – In Groups

Divide up into groups of 3-4 students.

Based on the lists of Twitter safety risks each of you developed, combine lists and create a master list of potential Twitter risks.

Activity

For each risk identified on your master list, create a strategy to counteract the risk.

Meet Back as a Class

As a class:• Share your Twitter risk lists

and your corresponding safety strategies.  • Compare the strategies you

developed to The i-SAFE Guide to Twitter Safety on the following slides.

If your account is compromised (i.e., your password is stolen or guessed and another user tweets from your account.)

Safety Strategies:• Regularly change your password.• Never share your password.• Ignore requests for your password or

account info.

Harassment and bullyingSafety Strategies:• When tweeting, think before you send.• Don’t be a bully.• Be courteous, even when you encounter

people you don’t like or disagree with.• Retaliation can reinforce bad behavior and

encourage bullies.• Don’t forward or re-tweet mean messages.• Realize that things meant as a joke can be

very hurtful.

If bullied by othersSafety Strategy: Block and ignoreIf you are receiving unwanted communications from a bully, block the user and end any communication.

Ending communication with bullies shows them that you are not willing to engage with them, and they often lose interest. It also demonstrates to others that you are not involved in similar behavior and that you are acting against bullying.

Tweeting inappropriate images Once sent images are not retrievable!Safety Strategy:• Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to

“undo” or “fix” the mistake of sending nude or inappropriate images. Make it a policy to NEVER send inappropriate images.

Identity theftSafety Strategies:• Limit personal identifying information on your

profile.

• Be cautious when tweeting your personal information, especially your private address, location, credit card number, or phone number.

Identity theftSafety Strategies:• Remember, tweets are public and can be

seen by anyone. If you want your tweets to be available only to approved followers, you can set your Twitter account to protected.

• People are not always who they claim to be on their Twitter profile. Be wary of communication asking for information and block suspicious followers.

Stalkers and predatorsPeople are not always who they claim to be – be wary of and ignore communication from unknown followers that is inappropriate or asks for too much information.

Safety Strategies:•Disable public GPS information.•Block suspicious followers.•Consider protecting your tweets, even for just a brief time to discourage an unwanted follower.

How to Protect Your Tweets

You can protect your tweets in your account settings page.

Follow these steps:1. Log in to your Twitter account.2. Visit your account settings page by

selecting “Settings” from the drop-down menu on the right hand side of your screen.

3. Scroll down and check the box next to “Protect my Tweets.”

4. Save your changes.

Protecting TweetsWhen you navigate to your homepage after protecting your tweets, you’ll see a notice reminding you that your tweets are now protected.

Accounts with protected tweets can always go public by un-checking the box in account settings.

Wrap-Up
