Literacy Lists
Archdiocese of Hartford
Catholic Schools
Grades K through 12
2011
“Literacy allows the person to develop his possibilities, to broaden his talents, to enrich his relationships…
Literacy and education are an essential duty and investment for humanity's future…”
~Pope John Paul, II, 1995

May 2011
Dear Teachers,
The following lists of books were created as a guide for you in choosing reading material for your students.
The list does not pretend to be a complete inventory of all that is wonderful in children’s literature. It is, rather,
a collection of award winning titles, titles that teachers in our schools have used with success or that publishers
of approved texts have recommended. To it you should add those pieces of children’s literature that you and
your students treasure.
The books listed are arranged in general grade levels. The placement of a book in a particular grade had as
much to do with the subject matter of the material as the reading level. A book like A Taste of Blackberries is
readable for the average second grader. Its theme of a child dealing with the death of a friend, however, is
usually more appropriate to third or fourth grade.
With this list we make the following recommendations:
Read children’s books. Knowing the literature available to your students will help you find books that
appeal to them and aid in the education process.
Read aloud to your students every day. However old your students may be, they are never too old to
listen to a good story. Read aloud from children’s literature in all subject areas and wherever it is
appropriate in your school day and with your youngsters.
When putting together a reading list for your students, be sure you are familiar with every book you
include. If you haven’t read a particular piece of literature, make sure you know the content of the
material. Read book reviews and annotated bibliographies of children’s literature.
In any supplemental or summer reading list you create, be sure to include nonfiction, drama and poetry.
Never require your students to read a book that you have not read from cover to cover.
Sincerely,
ADH Curriculum Commission 2010
Valerie Mara, Director of Curriculum Design

encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.”
~Katherine Patterson
