After inserting the tube, back the tube out about 1/8" so that the end of the tube sits away from the pipe wall. (This step is only necessary for pipe sizes 18" and smaller.) Tighten the lock ring. 3. Hang the manometer in a vertical position above the head of the pitot tube, so there is no air trapped in the hoses. Turn the valves at the bottom of the manometer so that the valve handles are horizontal and pointing outward. (See Appendix F. This is the bleed position and helps vent trapped air when the pitot valves are opened.) Connect the rubber hoses to the manometer.

B) WELL/PUMP TESTING

1. Place a well sounder in the well access hole (in contact with the water) or install atest gauge in the air line and pressurize the line.

2. Install a test gauge on the pump discharge line. Also install a pressure gauge on thepump suction line when testing a booster pump with positive pressure.

C) TEST METHOD

1. Use the ID gauge through the tapped hole (when cold-testing) or through thecorporation stop (when live testing) to measure the inside diameter of the pumpdischarge line. (See Figure 2) Use the conversion chart (Appendix A) to convert thisto square inches.

2. Install the pitot tube in the pump discharge line. (See Appendix B) Use the extensiontip that most closely matches the inside diameter of the pipe. After inserting thetube, back the tube out about 1/8" so that the end of the tube sits away from the pipewall. (This step is only necessary for pipe sizes 18" and smaller.) Tighten the lockring.

3. Hang the manometer in a vertical position above the head of the pitot tube, so thereis no air trapped in the hoses. Turn the valves at the bottom of the manometer sothat the valve handles are horizontal and pointing outward. (See Appendix F. Thisis the bleed position and helps vent trapped air when the pitot valves are opened.) Connect the rubber hoses to the manometer.

4. Use the well sounder to measure and record the standing water level in the well. Close all valves on the pitot tube head. If testing in a cold line, turn on the pumpdrive motor. Once the motor is running, measure and record the running waterlevels until the water level in the well stabilizes.

5. With the motor running at normal speed, open valves “A” and “B” (See figure 1) torelease trapped air. Close valve “B” and move valve “A” to the bypass position. Release any additional air by opening valve “C”. After releasing air, close valve “C”. Connect manometer hoses to pitot tube.

6. Open pitot tube valves “A” and “B” simultaneously. Hold the manometer above thelevel of the discharge pipe, and allow air and water to bleed from the hoses. Thenturn the valve stems at the bottom of the manometer to a vertical position. If waterfills the glass tubes, it may be necessary to add air through the Schrader valve at thetop of the manometer. If the water level is too low, release air through this samevalve. After the water has settled in the tubes, tap or shake the hoses to release anytrapped air.

7. Turn the pitot tube 90° from the water flow. (The flow arrow on the pitot tube headshould be pointing to the side of the pipe.) Turn valve “A” to bypass. Add or releaseair from the manometer to bring the water levels near to the center of the tubes. Ifthe water in the tubes is not even, it is usually an indication of trapped air in thehoses. Tap and work the hoses to release this air. If the water levels are still noteven, the accuracy of the test may exceed the 5% error factor associated with thistest.

8. Rotate the pitot tube until the flow arrow on the head points directly down the centerof the pipe in the direction of the water flow. Open valve “A”.

9. Move the manometer slider to the lower water level and read the difference betweenthe two tubes.

10. Record the manometer readings at regular intervals for a minimum of 3 minutes. Average these readings to obtain a final reading.

Note: If the water volume exceeds the manometer capacity, add the extension tubeto the manometer. (See Appendix D) Attach the extension to either side ofthe manometer, and to the bypass side of the pitot tube. Then release or addair until the water columns are balanced approximately 6" from the bottom of

the manometer. When in the test position, measure the distance between thetwo columns with a tape measure. Using the chart (Appendix C), convert thereading from linear inches to a manometer reading.

11. Multiply the final reading by the number of square inches in the pipe ID to determinethe flowrate in gallons per minute.

D) WELL SOUNDING USING AN ELECTRIC WELL SOUNDER

1. Use the well sounder in situations where the well has a sounder access tube.

2. Connect the electric sounder ground wire to the access pipe. (When using a doublewire sounder, grounding is not necessary)

3. Turn the electric sounder switch on and touch the metal tip of the sounder wire to theaccess pipe. Observe the voltage meter. If the voltage registers on the meter, grounding can be considered satisfactory.

4. Slowly unreel wire into the sounder access pipe. Check periodically to assure thatthe wire is moving freely. Do not run more feet of wire down the well than the depthof the water column.

5. Observe the voltage meter as the wire is being unreeled. When the sinker tiptouches the water, voltage should register on the meter.

Note: If oil has collected on the top of the well water, the registered voltage may bevery low when the sinker tip touches the oil. As the wire passes through theoil and touches the water, the voltage should be higher.

6. After the voltage meter indicates that the sinker tip has contacted the water, retrievethe wire until no voltage measures.

7. Lower the wire again and stop at the point where the registered voltage indicatesthat the sinker tip has contacted the water.

8. Slowly rewind the wire from the access pipe after recording the depth measurement. If the wire gets stuck, attempt to free it by lowering the wire and giving it severalsharp pulls. If the wire breaks or cannot be retrieved, tie the wire around the accesspipe to indicate the obstruction.

E) ADDITIONAL DATA FOR HALL TUBE

To get flow velocity in feet per second (FT/SEC), multiply the manometer reading by 0.318.

Data conversions and power equations:

1 Acre ft = 43,560 Cubic Feet1 Acre Ft = 325,850 US Gallons1 Cubic foot/Sec = 448.83 Gallons per Minute (GPM)1 Cubic Foot = 7.48 US Gallons1 Cubic Foot = 62.4 lbs1 US Gallon = 231 Cubic Inches

DISKInput Horsepower = (4.82) x (K ) x (Disk Revolutions)Seconds

Water Horsepower = (Total Head in feet) x GPM3960

Overall efficiency = Water HP/Input HP

Water Head (ft) = (Pressure in psig) x 2.31

Pressure (psig) = (Water Head) x 0.433

The chart is just a guide. If you happen to fall between a maximum for one tip andthe minimum of another, either tip will suffice. We are aware that some values at theupper end of the size ranges are larger than the Outside Diameter of commerciallyavailable pipe. These numbers are included to clarify he upper end of the range, sothere are no questions.
