SUMMA HEALTH SYSTEM DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY
MEDICAL STUDENT OBJECTIVES
Purpose of elective: Medical students shall acquire general knowledge of the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal system and its alteration by congenital, degenerative, traumatic, neoplastic, inflammatory and infectious conditions.
This goal will be achieved by an organized educational program. A syllabus and a schedule are provided outlining the elective. We promise to teach you in the OR, the Clinic and in Didactic Settings. Objectives: Learn Orthopaedics, you should be smarter and more confident following your rotation. Specifically: Medical students will be expected to learn and demonstrate the ability to do: 1. A detailed pertinent history of a patient with an orthopaedic problem 2. A detailed pertinent physical exam of an orthopaedic patient 3. Formulate a basic treatment plan for a variety of orthopaedic problems (Traumatic, neoplastic, degenerative, inflammatory, and infectious) These goals will be achieved utilizing the following available orthopaedic resources:
1. Daily didactic lectures 2. Weekly junior resident/medical student case discussion conference 3. Outpatient clinic experience 4. Emergency room 5. Operating room 6. Every fourth night call 7. Orthopaedic textbooks in department library

Helpful Hints:
How to be useful on morning rounds. Rounds for residents start at 6 AM on Main 8 (“A” elevators or service elevators will get you there).
The call team from the night before and any rotating medical students will write vital signs and any
relevant lab work (usually just Hb/INR, but may include cultures, drain outputs, etc.) on chart prior to
resident rounding. The previous nights’ call team usually starts “doing vitals” by 05:45 so that all
vitals/labs are done before full team arrives to see patients. Students are expected to help with this
task.
Main 8 consists mainly of total joints patients (total knee arthroplasty =TKA, hip = THA, shoulder =TSA,
reverse TSA = RTSA)
The first resident/medical student to show up for team rounds will start at room 801, the second
resident will start at 802, the third at 803, and so on. There really are no service based rounds except
for the spine resident who sees patients on the 7th floor.
#1 Rule: You MUST have your notes cosigned by a resident.
What to tell patients
o Always introduce yourself as part of the orthopaedic team. Always let them know what you
are there to do - Let them know if you are going to take down the dressing or leave it. If their
incision looks good tell them. Tell them if they have a good pulse.
o Let the patients know that therapy will work with them (their appointment times are usually
up on the dry erase board, and usually BID)
o Joints patients usually leave POD#3, but many that are doing well will leave POD#2. TSAs
usually leave POD#1 or 2. When they ask when they can leave – let them know the key to
getting out of the hospital is passing PT and being only on oral pain meds. When they have
