• Short description of M. Phil. Dissertation:

The Dimuon Spectrometer of the ALICE detector consists 5 Stations of Track-

ing Chambers to detect the muons coming from the decay of heavy quarkonia

(J/ψ and Υ families). Each station is composed of two detection planes in

order to provide two-dimensional hit information. The chambers of Station 2

have a quadrant design and are Cathode Pad Chambers. One of the quad-

rants (zeroth chamber) had been fabricated at SINP, Kolkata and tested with

7 GeV proton beam at Proton Synchrotron at CERN, Geneva during Novem-

ber, 2003 and July, 2004. During these tests, the performance of the MANAS

chips were also found to be acceptable for Front End Electronics (FEE) of

tracking chambers.

Research Activity

1) Past:

• ALICE Collaboration

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a general purpose heavy - ion

experiment, designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter and

Quark - Gluon Plasma (QGP) at√s = 5.5 TeV (for Pb - Pb Collisions) and

14 TeV (for p - p Collisions) at Large Hadron Collider. Heavy quarkonia

suppression is believed to be one of the most important probes for examining

the occurrence of phase transition to QGP. In a de-confined state and over a

certain temperature they would melt through color screening. It may be inter-

esting to mention that the production of the quarkonia resonances belonging to

11

Page 12: Summary - amu.ac.in · production were also discussed thoroughly. An oral presentation on the report was given in M.Sc. nal examination. Schools/Workshops/Symposia attended: 13 International

J/ψ and Υ families can be detected via their decays into µ+µ−. The invariant

mass of the muon pair, which is the mass of the resonance, can be measured

by Forward Muon Spectrometer (FMS) of the ALICE detector. The tracking

system of FMS consists ten high gain (∼105) Cathode Pad Chambers (CPC)

grouped into 5 stations and a dedicated pad readout electronics chain. The

Multiplexed ANAlog Signal (MANAS) processor chips are used as the readout

device for FMS.

(i) Detector

– Design, fabrication, testing and validation of CPC at Saha Institute of

Nuclear Physics, India and CERN, Geneva, Switzerland.

– Installation and commissioning of CPC at the experimental site, Point 2

of Large Hadron Collider.

– Data taking and performance study of the detectors in Cosmic Ray and

Beam run at CERN.

(ii) Readout Electronics

– Testing and delivery of 108, 000 MANAS devices to the ALICE Collab-

oration.

– Testing and validation of Electronics Exit Boards of CPC at CERN.

– Integration of Readout Electronics over Cathode Pad Chambers.

– Performance study of all the channels of Readout Electronics during the

Cosmic Ray and Beam Run at CERN.

work called AliRoot.

– Mass Resolution of FMS with simulated events.

– Effect of HIJING background events on Mass Resolution of FMS.

– Effect of pT broadening on J/ψ mass resolution.

• CBM Collaboration

CBM is planned to create highest baryon densities in the Nucleus - Nucleus

collisions and to explore the properties of super - dense nuclear matter. It will

measure rare and penetrating probes such as dilepton pairs from light vector

mesons and charmonium, open charm, multistrange hyperons, together with

collective hadron flow and fluctuations in heavy - ion collisions at rates of up

to 10 million reactions per second.

12

Page 13: Summary - amu.ac.in · production were also discussed thoroughly. An oral presentation on the report was given in M.Sc. nal examination. Schools/Workshops/Symposia attended: 13 International

The measurements of dilepton pairs (µ+µ−) coming from J/ψ and low mass

vector mesons like ρ0, ω0 and φ0 in Au + Au collisions at 25A GeV have been

proposed, as a key probe to indication of in-medium modification of hadrons,

chiral symmetry restoration and de-confinement.

The current design of the muon system consists of 16 detector layers with

100 µm position resolution and 5 absorber layers made of tungsten, iron and

carbon of variable thickness.

(i) Detector

– Detector geometry simulation, its implementation and the physics sim-

ulation with realistic geometry in the analysis framework called CBM-

ROOT.

– Readout Pad size optimization and its implementation.

– Simulated study of shielding material for beam pipe.

(ii) Physics Simulation

– Reconstruction of generated J/ψ events with URQMD background events

in the MUON system of CBM.

2) Present leading Future:

• Phenomenology

– Tsallis Distribution at LHC Energies -

The ALICE Collaboration at CERN, Geneva has formally agreed

upon to use the proposed Tsallis distribution in describing the trans-

verse momentum spectra of produced particles measured in p - p

and p - Pb collisions at LHC energies.

The dynamics of colliding hadrons can be determined from the distri-

bution of the transverse momenta of produced particles. The available

range of transverse momenta has expanded considerably with the advent

of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Collider energies up to

7 TeV are now available in p - p collisions and transverse momenta of

hundreds of GeV are a common occurrence. This helps in testing and ap-

plying relativistic thermodynamics and hydrodynamics in a new energy

region. Thermal models are part of the standard set of tools to analyze

high-energy collisions. We have proposed a thermodynamically consistent

model based on the Tsallis distribution. The Tsallis distribution has the

advantage of being connected, via the entropy, to thermodynamics which

is not the case for other power law distributions. The Tsallis distribution

13

was first proposed about twenty-five years ago as a generalization of the

Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution, and is characterized by three parameters

q, T and dNdy

∣∣∣∣y=0

. Various versions of the Tsallis distribution have been

considered in the literature and were used by PHENIX, STAR, ATLAS,

ALICE and CMS collaborations. At mid-rapidity, y = 0, and for zero

chemical potential, the modified Tsallis distribution is given by:

– THERMUS Model: Particle yield measurement at LHC and

FAIR energies -

The statistical-thermal model has proved extremely successful in describ-

ing the hadron multiplicities observed in relativistic collisions of both

heavy-ions and elementary particles.

Within the statistical-thermal model there is a freedom regarding the

ensemble with which to treat the quantum numbers B (baryon number),

S (strangeness) and Q (charge), which are conserved in strong interac-

tions. The introduction of chemical potentials for each of these quantum

numbers (i. e. a grand-canonical description) allows fluctuations about

conserved averages. In order to calculate the thermal properties of a sys-

tem, one starts with an evaluation of its partition function. The form of

the partition function obviously depends on the choice of ensemble.

The success of statistical-thermal models has led to the creation of several

software codes that use experimental particle yields as input and calcu-

late the corresponding chemical freeze-out temperature (T ) and baryon

chemical potential (µB).

THERMUS is a package of C++ classes and functions allowing statistical-

thermal model analyses of particle production in relativistic heavy-ion

collisions to be performed within the ROOT framework. Calculations

are possible within three statistical ensembles; a grand-canonical treat-

ment of the conserved quantum numbers B, S and Q, a fully canoni-

cal treatment of the conserved charges, and a mixed-canonical ensemble

combining a canonical treatment of strangeness with a grand-canonical

treatment of baryon number and electric charges. THERMUS allows

the assignment of decay chains and detector efficiencies specific to each

particle yield, which enables sensible fitting of model parameters to ex-

perimental data.

– Mean pT fluctuations in J/ψ and identified particle production

measured with ALICE detector at LHC energies

Measurements of particle production in nucleus - nucleus collisions at the

Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies allow the study of fundamental

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) properties at low parton fractional

momentum x and high gluon densities. Additionally, they provide an

important reference measurement for studies of the properties of the QCD

matter created in nucleus - nucleus collisions.

• CBM Collaboration - Detector Design Simulation

Simulation for the detector design of the Muon Chambers for CBM has been

done and the physics performance with simulated design is being carried out.

3) Future:

• ALICE - Data Analysis and Detector Upgradation

– Fluctuations in Multiplicity and higher order moments -

Multiplicity of produced particles is an important quantity to character-

ize the evolving system in a heavy - ion collision. Fluctuation of particle

multiplicity from event to event may provide a distinct signal of the QGP

phase transition.

Since the multiplicity distributions for narrow bins in centrality can be

15

described by Gaussian distributions, the SPS experiment, WA98 and

NA49 used the normalized variance to quantify multiplicity fluctuations.

Multiplicity fluctuations can be studied and higher order moments can

be calculated more precisely with ALICE data.

For studying multiplicity fluctuations in detail, the distributions are made

for various centrality and pT bins and compared to the results from mixed

events as well as participant and other model predictions in order to make

any conclusions about the presence or absence of fluctuations.

– Upgrade of the Muon Tracking of ALICE Detector

Quarkonium, open heavy flavour and vector meson production in heavy-

ion collisions at the LHC are the main physics topics addressed by the

ALICE Muon Spectrometer. In the next years, J/ψ production will be

studied in detail, in particular the nuclear modification factor and az-

imuthal asymmetry as a function of the rapidity and transverse momen-

tum will be measured.

In order to cope with the increased collision rate, an upgrade of the front-

end and readout electronics for the muon detectors is needed.

The design of the tracking system electronics was driven by two main

requirements: to read 1.08 millions channels at a rate up to 1 kHz and

to allow a spatial resolution of better than 100 µm in each tracking sta-

tion. This electronics is divided in three parts: the front-end board

called MANU (MAnas NUmerique), the readout system called CROCUS

(Cluster Read Out Concentrator Unit System) and the interface with the

ALICE central trigger called TCI (Trigger Crocus Interface).

(i) Front-End Electronics Upgrade

The goal of the upgrade consists in increasing the readout rate to a min-

imum of 5 kHz while keeping the dead-time below 10%. This means that

the total readout time will have to be reduced below 20 µs in case no

multi-event buffering is implemented in the front-end electronics. This

will anyway require a replacement of the MANU card. The baseline op-

tion is to develop a new MANU card with an architecture similar to the

present one. The ADCs, which in the present version work at 1 MHz,

and therefore take 32 µs for the digitisation, will be replaced by10MHz

ADCs. This will reduce the digitization time to 3.2 µs. It should be

noted that also the MANAS and MARC chips will have to be replaced

by new ASICs with the same or similar functionalities.

16

Page 17: Summary - amu.ac.in · production were also discussed thoroughly. An oral presentation on the report was given in M.Sc. nal examination. Schools/Workshops/Symposia attended: 13 International

(ii) Read-Out Electronics Upgrade

In order to achieve the goal of a maximum readout time below 20 µs, also

the CROCUS readout system has to be replaced. Preliminary studies in-

dicate that the upgrade requirements could be fulfilled by a new readout

system based on state-of-the-art FPGAs. The design of the new readout

system will benefit from the work which is being done for the develop-

ment of a similar readout unit for another experiment. The general idea

is to keep the same readout scheme and cabling infrastructure between

the detectors and the CROCUS. Therefore, the new CROCUS will have

also 5 readout boards based on a SPARTAN FPGA. These 5 boards will

be read out by a concentrator board (CRT) based on a VIRTEX 6 FPGA.

In order to de-randomize the data transferred to the DAQ, this system

will implement a multievent buffering able to store several central Pb-Pb

collisions. The trigger signals will be still managed by the TCI. The new

CROCUS system combined to the new MANU will allow readout times

below 20 µs.

• CBM Collaboration - Detector Fabrication, Testing, Installation and

Commissioning

The prototypes for Muon Chambers using thick GEM technology have been

fabricated and tested in beam runs at GSI. Thick GEM detectors will be

fabricated, tested, installed and commissioned at the Experimental site of

CBM Experiment at FAIR accelerator at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany.
