EXISTING L-861T FIXTURE, NEW ISOLATION TRANSFORMER AND NEW CABLES WITH
L-823 CONNECTORS FOR REINSTALLATION OF EXISTING LIGHT BASE.
3. TEMPORARY CABLING MAY BE USED TO MAINTAIN CIRCUIT CONTINUITY, IN
ACCORDANCE WITH SPECIFICATIONS. TEMPORARY CABLE INSTALLED ABOVE
GROUND SHALL BE IN RIGID GALVANIZED STEEL CONDUIT, FASTENED TO PAVEMENT
AT MAXIMUM 4’ SPACING. CABLE ACROSS SURFACES SHALL BE PLACED BEHIND
BARRICADES USED TO CLOSE PORTIONS OF T/Ws OR OTHER SURFACES. IN TURF
AREAS, TEMPORARY "JUMPER" CABLE SHALL BE DIRECT BURIED APPROXIMATELY
6" TO 12" BELOW SURFACE GRADE.
4. TEMPORARY CABLE CONNECTIONS SHALL BE MADE AT LIGHT BASES OR
HANDHOLES AS REQUIRED BY A PARTICULAR CONSTRUCTION PHASE OR
SEQUENCE. THE PLAN FOR TEMPORARY CONNECTIONS SHALL BE SUBMITTED
TO THE COTR FOR APPROVAL PRIOR TO INTERRUPTING A LIGHTING CIRCUIT.
ALL CONNECTIONS FOR AFL CIRCUITS SHALL BE MADE WITH APPROPRIATE
SIZE L-823 CONNECTORS. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TEMPORARY "JUMPER"
CABLE ARE SHOWN ON LAYOUT SHEETS WHERE APPLICABLE, AND ARE
BASED ON AVAILABLE CIRCUIT INFORMATION.
16. ALL ELECTRICAL WORK EITHER SHOWN OR PERFORMED DUE TO WORK SHOWN ON
THESE DRAWINGS SHALL CONFORM TO THE NEC, LATEST EDITION, AND ANY FEDERAL,
LOCAL, INDUSTRY OR AIRPORT REGULATIONS OR STANDARDS, GUIDELINES, STANDARD
PRACTICES OR AUTHORITY HAVING JURISDICTION. IN THE CASE OF OVERLAP, THE MOST
STRINGENT REQUIREMENTS SHALL PREVAIL.
17. COORDINATE ALL WORK PERFORMED ON AIRFIELD LIGHTING CIRCUITS WITH IAD EXTERIOR
ELECTRIC SHOP (703-572-2836) AND AIRPORT OPERATIONS A MINIMUM OF TEN WORKING
DAYS PRIOR TO THE START OF WORK. ACTIVITIES PERFORMED IN THE AIRFIELD LIGHTING
VAULT SHALL BE LIMITED TO CONTRACTOR PERFORMED LOCK-OUT/TAG-OUT OF AFFECTED
CIRCUITS AND SHALL BE SUPERVISED BY IAD EXTERIOR ELECTRIC SHOP.
18. ENSURE PROPER HANDLING OF LIGHT FIXTURES DURING REMOVAL, STORAGE AND
INSTALLATION.
19. EXISTING EDGE LIGHT FIXTURES SHALL BE REMOVED AND TURNED OVER TO THE EXTERIOR
ELECTRIC SHOP, UNLESS OTHERWISE DIRECTED BY THE COTR.
20. WHERE MEDIUM VOLTAGE DUCTBANK CROSSES EXISTING AIRFIELD LIGHTING DUCTBANK
OR CONDUIT, MEANS AND METHODS TO PROTECT THE EXISTING DUCTBANK AND CIRCUITING
SHALL BE USED. ANY DAMAGE TO CONDUIT, DUCTBANK OR CIRCUIT OPERATION SHALL BE
REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY BY THE CONTRACTOR, AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO THE AUTHORITY.
CONTRACTOR SHALL KEEP ON HAND AN ADEQUATE AMOUNT OF MATERIALS TO MAKE SUCH
REPAIRS IMMEDIATELY.
21. THE TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS "TAXIWAY (T/W)" AND "TAXILANE (T/L)" ARE USED
INTERCHANGEABLY THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS AND SHALL
BOTH REFER TO THE TAXILANE AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT INSTALLED..
1. THE LOCATION OF UNDERGROUND UTILITIES AS INDICATED ON PLANS HAS BEEN
OBTAINED FROM EXISTING RECORDS. NEITHER THE AUTHORITY NOR THE ARCHITECT
/ENGINEER ASSUMES ANY RESPONSIBILITY WHATSOEVER IN RESPECT TO THE ACCURACY,
COMPLETENESS, OR SUFFICIENCY OF THE INFORMATION SHOWN. THERE IS NO
GUARANTEE, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, THAT THE LOCATIONS, SIZE AND TYPE
OF MATERIALS OF EXISTING UNDERGROUND UTILITIES INDICATED ARE REPRESENTATIVE
OF THOSE TO BE ENCOUNTERED IN THE CONSTRUCTION. IT SHALL BE THE CONTRACTOR’S
RESPONSIBILITY TO DETERMINE THE ACTUAL LOCATION OF ALL SUCH FACILITIES,
INCLUDING SERVICE CONNECTIONS TO UNDERGROUND UTILITIES. PRIOR TO
CONSTRUCTION, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY THE COTR OF HIS OPERATIONAL
PLANS. IN THE EVENT AN UNEXPECTED UTILITY INTERFERENCE IS ENCOUNTERED
DURING CONSTRUCTION, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY THE COTR.
ANY SUCH MAINS AND/OR SERVICES DISTURBED BY THE CONTRACTOR’S OPERATIONS
SHALL BE RESTORED IMMEDIATELY AT HIS EXPENSE.
2. THE LIGHTING CIRCUITS AND HOMERUN CABLES SHALL BE MARKED AND IDENTIFIED
AT ALL POINTS ACCESSIBLE TO THESE CIRCUITS IN ACCORDANCE WITH SPECIFICATION
SECTION L-108, PARA 108-3.5.
3. LOCATION SHOWN FOR EXISTING CABLES/DUCT IS APPROXIMATE. THE CONTRACTOR
SHALL EXERCISE CAUTION AND USE HAND EXCAVATION FOR ANY EXCAVATION IN THE
VICINITY OF EXISTING INSTALLATIONS. ANY DAMAGE SHALL BE REPAIRED BY THE
CONTRACTOR AT NO COST TO THE AUTHORITY. DISTURBED AREAS OUTSIDE PAVEMENT
AREAS SHALL BE RESTORED TO ORIGINAL SURFACE ELEVATION, RAKED SMOOTH AND
SEEDED.
4. TRENCHES SHALL NOT BE LEFT OPEN WHEN A T/W OR T/L IS OPERATIONAL AND CONDUCTOR
ENDS SHALL NOT REMAIN EXPOSED TO THE WEATHER.
5. EXISTING AIRFIELD LIGHTING SYSTEM SHALL BE KEPT IN OPERATION DURING THE
THE CONSTRUCTION UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED OR PRIOR APPROVAL HAS BEEN
OBTAINED FROM THE COTR. THIS INCLUDES ALL R/W AND T/W OR T/L LIGHTING ON ACTIVE
PORTIONS. PROVIDE PLAN FOR TEMPORARY SPLICES OF PRIMARY CABLE TO MAINTAIN
CIRCUIT CONTINUITY FOR COTR APPROVAL PRIOR TO INTERRUPTING ANY CIRCUIT.
COORDINATE WITH THE ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE SHOP FOR SHUTTING OFF LIGHTING
CIRCUITS IN AFL VAULTS.
6. ANY UNPROTECTED CABLE (DIRECT BURIED) ENCOUNTERED THAT IS VERIFIED AS NOT
ABANDONED IN PLACE SHALL BE PLACED IN SPLIT DUCT OF APPROPRIATE SIZE AND
CONCRETE ENCASED THROUGH THE AREA OF CONSTRUCTION. CONTRACTOR SHALL
TAKE ALL REASONABLE MEASURES TO AVOID HAVING TO CUT AND SPLICE DIRECT
BURIED CABLE. BE SURE TO NOTE SPLIT DUCT PORTIONS ON AS-BUILTS.
7. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL STAKE OUT THE ROUTE FOR NEW CONDUITS AND OBTAIN
COTR APPROVAL BEFORE STARTING THE TRENCHING AT EACH SITE.
8. SEE CIVIL SERIES DRAWINGS FOR CIVIL DEMOLITION AND CONSTRUCTION, STRIPING
AND OTHER CIVIL ITEMS OF WORK.
9. FOR ELECTRICAL DUCTBANK LAYOUTS, SEE DRAWINGS EL02.0004 THROUGH EL02.0007
AND FOR ELECTRICAL DUCTBANK AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT DETAILS, SEE
DETAILS SPECIFIC TO ELECTRIC DUCTBANK AND MANHOLE INSTALLATION.
10. WATER MAY NEED TO BE PUMPED OUT OF EXISTING MANHOLES, HANDHOLES AND LIGHT
BASES. THIS IS CONTRACTOR’S RESPONSIBILITY AND SHALL BE INCIDENTAL TO THE
WORK, WITH NO SEPARATE PAYMENT. DISPOSAL SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH
APPLICABLE LAWS AND REGULATIONS.
11. ALL CIRCUITS AFFECTED BY THIS PROJECT SHALL BE MEGGERED PRIOR TO THE START
OF AND AT THE COMPLETION OF WORK. PORTIONS OF CIRCUITS INSTALLED NEW UNDER
THIS PROJECT SHALL BE MEGGERED SEPARATELY AND SHALL MEET A MINIMUM OF 50
MEGAOHMS. ANY CIRCUITS NOT MEETING THEIR ORIGINAL MEGGER READING OR NEW
PORTIONS NOT MEETING THE 50 MEGAOHMS MINIMUM SHALL BE REPAIRED BY THE
CONTRACTOR AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO THE AUTHORITY. REMEDIAL REPAIRS INCLUDE
REPLACEMENT OF SPLICES, TRANSFORMERS, L-824 CONDUCTOR, ETC.
12. COUNTERPOISE AND GROUND SYSTEMS ARE TWO SEPARATE SYSTEMS AND SHALL NOT BE
CONNECTED UNLESS SHOWN ON THESE PLANS.
13. UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, FURNISH AND INSTALL ALL EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR
CONTRACT COMPLETION. ALL EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS FURNISHED UNDER THIS CONTRACT
SHALL BE FACTORY TESTED WITH TEST RESULTS SUBMITTED TO THE COTR FOR APPROVAL.
PRIOR TO THE INSTALLATION OF ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, CONTRACTOR SHALL SUBMIT
SHOP DRAWINGS FOR APPROVAL AND PROVIDE A MANUFACTURER’S REPRESENTATIVE TO
TRAIN CONTRACTOR AND AIRPORT PERSONNEL ON APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION
(LIGHT BASE INSTALLATION, SIGN INSTALLATION, AND OTHERS AS APPLICABLE).
14. UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, DO NOT CUT, TRENCH, DEMOLISH OR MAR EXISTING PAVEMENT.
TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO PROTECT EXISTING PAVEMENT. ANY DAMAGE TO PAVEMENT

INSTALL. IF A COUPLING WITH NO INTERNAL STOP IS USED OR IF CONDUIT IS BENT

9. AFTER CONCRETE ENCASEMENT HAS CURED, EXTEND TOP SECTION TO GRADE
(MINIMUM 6" EXTENSION OF TOP SECTION) AND ADJUST TO PROPER ELEVATION (TOP
FLANGE OF BASE SHOULD BE APPROXIMATELY 1/2" ABOVE ADJACENT FINISHED
GRADE ) AND REPLACE COVER PLATE. FILL ANNULAR SPACE WITH CONCRETE,
SLOPING SURFACE SLIGHTLY TO DRAIN AWAY FROM THE LIGHT BASE, MATCHING

MIN. 3" ON ALL SIDES.
3. CONNECTING NEW CONDUIT TO EXISTING LIGHT BASE:
a. UNCOVER FACE OF LIGHT BASE TO BE PENETRATED. CAREFULLY REMOVE EXISTING
CONCRETE ENCASEMENT (SAW, CHIP, ETC.) AS REQUIRED FOR SAWING HOLE.
b. SAWCUT HOLE IN BASE, CAREFULLY SO AS NOT TO OTHERWISE DAMAGE INTEGRITY
OF LIGHT BASE. PAINT DAMAGED AND UNCOATED METAL SURFACES AT PENETRATION
WITH 95% PURE ZINC COATING. IF OIL WAS USED IN SAWCUTTING HOLE, OIL ON SURFACE
MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE APPLYING ZINC COATING. PERFORM ALL WORK IN
ACCORDANCE WITH MFG’S INSTRUCTIONS. INSTALL MANUFACTURER’S ADAPTER,
LOCK RINGS AND BUSHINGS TO ACCOMMODATE NEW CONDUIT. DO NOT USE GROMMETS.
c. GROUND #6 COUNTERPOISE WITH 3/4"x10’ COPPER CLAD GROUND ROD APPROX. 2’ FROM
LIGHT BASE. DO NOT CONNECT COUNTERPOISE TO LIGHT BASE.
d. INSTALL CONDUIT (PVC SCH 40). ENCASE CONNECTION WITH CONCRETE (P-610). BACKFILL
AND RESTORE SURFACE IN KIND. (SEE PAVEMENT RESTORATION DETAILS.)
