2 RECOMMENDATION
Mitigation measures / design considerations Score
a) Development of the site would have minimal detrimental local ecological impact.
b) Development of the site would result in some adverse local ecological impact but there is scope for mitigation.
The majority of the site comprises amenity grassland, which is considered to have low ecological value. Although it includes a few non-native species, the woodland is fairly well structured with a diverse mix of broadleaved tree species. It is recommended that the woodland along the western and southern boundaries and part of the eastern boundary is retained and incorporated into any future development.

4 FURTHER INFORMATION
Brief Site Description
The site is an active recreation ground, the majority of which is mown amenity grassland. The site is bound by either rows of trees or thin strips of woodland with areas of unmown semi-improved neutral grassland. An active building is situated within the northwest corner of the site, with an associated car park. A track/road along the eastern edge of the site leads to a further building.
Additional comments / information
Figure 1 shows the Phase 1 Habitat map for the site. Figure 2 shows the areas with significant ecological value. The data search revealed three great crested newt records from the surrounding area. Two appear to be a significant distance from the site. However, one is from the Tankersley Common area and should be investigated further prior to any future development. A bat survey is recommended if either of the two buildings are to be demolished.

Site Description
The site lies to the west of Hoyland Common, close to junction 36 of the M1 motorway. Hoyland Common Primary School lies directly adjacent to the east of the site with an agricultural field directly to the west. The site is directly adjacent to roads to both the north and south.
The site is an active recreation ground and is dominated by amenity grassland. This grassland is closely mown and the sward is kept short for recreational purposes. Grasses dominate with perennial rye grass Lolium perenne and annual meadow grass Poa annua most common. Scattered herbs include greater plantain Plantago major, dandelion Taraxacum officinale, daisy Bellis perennis and common ragwort Senecio jacobaea.
An area of unmown rough grassland lies within the southern portion of the site, with a smaller area adjacent to the west. Within the western grassland is abundant Yorkshire fog Holcus lanatus and cock’s-foot Dactylis glomerata. Other grass species include red fescue Festuca rubra, perennial rye grass, common bent Agrostis capillaris and annual meadow grass. Herbs are abundant with dandelion Taraxacum officinale, ribwort plantain Plantago lanceolata, autumn hawkbit Scorzoneroides autumnalis, common vetch Vicia sativa, creeping buttercup Ranunculus repens, common cat’s-ear Hypocharis radicata and nettle Urtica dioica. The larger area of unmown rough grassland lies within the southern portion of the site and is slightly more species rich. It comprises the same species as above with additional species including abundant common century Centaurium erythraea, selfheal Prunella vulgaris and moss Brachythecium rutabulum. Other additional species are occasional including common bird’s-foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus, common mouse-ear Cerastium fontanum, bramble Rubus fruticosus, common sorrel Rumex acetosa, meadow buttercup Ranunculus acris, bush vetch Vicia sepium and created dog’s-tail Cynosurus cristatus. A small part of this area retains water creating marshy grassland. Species are indicative of this and include tufted hair grass Deschampsia cespitosa, glaucous sedge Carex flacca and compact rush Juncus conglomeratus. There is a building at the southern end of the field, which is a brick built lean-to and comprises three walls with an open front.
Three small pockets of woodland occur in two corners along the western edge and the south eastern corner. These are linked via strips of woodland or rows of trees. A small wooded area in the corner of the field along the western edge comprises a mix of moderately young trees and shrubs. Species within the canopy include grey willow Salix cinerea, plum Prunus sp. and horse chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum. Hawthorn Crataegus monogyna, elder Sambucus nigra and guelder rose Vibernum opulus are abundant within the shrub layer. The canopy is dense and so the field layer is sparse with nettle dominant and bramble thickets creating a dense understory. A small area of dense scrub along the western boundary is dominated by blackthorn Prunus spinosa with hawthorn, elder, goat willow Salix caprea and bramble occasional. The field layer comprises nettle, false oat grass Arrhenatherum elatius and creeping thistle Cirsium arvense.
A further area of woodland in the far southern corner of the site joins a strip along the southern boundary and about half the length of the eastern boundary. A dense canopy comprises a mix of species including ash Fraxinus excelsior, plum, Norway maple Acer platanoides, cherry Prunus avium and goat willow and oak Quercus sp. Shrub layer species include hawthorn, field maple Acer campestre, hazel Corylus avellana, rose Rosa sp. and cotoneaster Cotoneaster sp. Bramble is locally dominant within the understory. Although fairly young, with some non-native species, the woodland has good structure and a diverse mix of species.
A line of planted young trees bounds the remaining length along the east edge of the site. The tree species are mostly non-native including Swedish whitebeam Sorbus intermedia, Norway maple, cherry and some oak, rowan Sorbus aucuparia and field maple.
A building is located at the northern end of the site, adjacent to Sheffield Road, with an associated car park to the east. A smaller second building is located along the eastern edge of the site with a track leading to it from Sheffield Road. Both buildings have potential to support roosting bats and a bat survey is recommended if they are to be demolished or significantly altered.
