Notes from Supervisor Runions O ceTh e folks at Our Towne Guilderland recently asked me to do a little column in their paper to help keep residents updated on things that are going on in the community. Ive agreed to give it a try, so in this and future issues of the paper, Ill be letting you know some of the things that are happening in Guilderland. I hope you nd the information useful.Basement and back-yard ooding has hit residents in a couple of areas of the Town pretty signi cantly in recent years, and we have initiated an e ort to respond to the problem. I have asked the Town Board to approve retaining an engineering rm to perform detailed engineering studies of the McKownville area, and of the Blackberry Estates area o of Curry Road to provide us with a full understanding of what the issues are, what steps need to be taken to remedy the problem, and to provide an informed estimate of the costs involved. I will also be asking the Board to approve a bonding resolution that would allow the Town to begin the actual work that would be involved in resolving the problem, starting with McKownville, where the situation has been a problem for many years.Flooding in the area along Western Avenue in front of Stuyvesant Plaza is another issue that has confronted the Town for a long time. Working with a number of other people and organizations- Assemblyman

McEnenys o ce, the NY State Transportation Department, the NY State O ce of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and Stuyvesant Plaza, we have been able to devise a plan that will provide a meaningful reduction in the frequency and severity of ooding at the location (based on average weather, whatever that may be), and will also allow for the area around the body of water once used as the McKownville Reservoir to be converted into a pocket park. In the area of communications, we have just enhanced the Town website to add the capacity for Town residents to access video of Town Board meetings on-line. We have a grant application pending that we led jointly with the Village of Altamont that will, if approved, allow for even further expansion of our ability to o er video-on-demand of the meetings of major Town boards. Residents unfamiliar with the Town website should take a few minutes to check it out, since it has experienced signi cant upgrades over the past year or two. Log on to www.townofguilderland.org for a wealth of information about current events and the workings of various parts of Town government. A wide range of forms are available in downloadable form, you can sign up to be included in e-mail contact lists for a variety or Town events, and there are links to a broad range of local and regional resources available to you.On the environmental front, I have determined that the issues surrounding the operation and future prospects of the Rapp Road land ll, not to mention its negative e ect on the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, are matters too signi cant to be ignored. I have therefore received the Town Boards approval to send trash from the Guilderland Transfer Station to the Colonie Town Land ll instead of to the Rapp Road facility. Th is change will not increase the Towns solid waste disposal costs, and I feel that the change is an environmentally responsible action.A summertime update wouldnt be complete if I didnt remind you about some of the great things that Guilderland has to o er at this time of year. Western Turnpike Golf Course is enjoying another busy season, and continues to o er an interesting and challenging gol ng experience at a moderate cost, especially for Town residents, who enjoy a discounted rate, even as we continue to operate the course at no cost to Town taxpayers. Our Summer Recreation Program continues to experience a strong response from residents, as it has for many years. We have a very limited number of openings still available for our programs, so call the Parks O ce at 456-3150 if youre interested. Th e Town Pool, the GRAB Barn, and the hiking trails in Tawasentha Park and the Pine Bush Preserve are busy this summer, as usual. Stop by and give them a look. Also, remember that every Th ursday at 7:30 Th e Guilderland Performing Arts Center is o ering its 30th season of free concerts in Tawasentha Park.Th ats quite a bit thats going on here in Guilderland this summer. ROGUE SECURITY PROGRAMS The most common computer issue that brings customers into ourstore is virus infection. Many times, people attempt to remove or clean the infection themselves and only end up making it worse.Most of these issues are caused by software labeled Rogue SecurityPrograms. They pose as ocial or legitimate antivirus & antispywareprograms, but in reality they ARE viruses & spyware! Usually theyappear without notice to the computer user. An icon placed on the desktop or a popup window from the system tray (near the clock)indicates that an infection has been detected! and encourages youto take immediate action by scanning your system with the antivirus or antispyware. The problem is that the scan results indicating that youre infectedwith multiple viruses is bogus. The program will direct you to remove the threats by paying $69.99 for full functionality of the program.Doing so will not only be the fastest $69.99 youve ever lost, but it will put your credit card number at risk of theft, and your computer will STILL be infected! These Rogue Security Programs often have a simple naming scheme such as Antivirus 2009. Some look an awful lot like portionsof Windows and may even claim to be part of Windows (such as WinAntivirus 2009). To be very clear, Microsoft never includes antivirus software built-in to Windows and Windows will never tell you that youre infected, since it does not have that functionality. Most commonly, the actual infection started silently in the background. Perhaps you downloaded some infected free music from a le sharing program such as LimeWire, or perhaps you clicked on an ad on a website. Alternatively, you may have just stumbled upon a website that infected your computer WITHOUT your interaction atall. There are multiple ways of getting these infections. Here are somekeys to keeping your computer safe:

1) MAKE SURE your computer is current with both Windowsand antivirus software updates. Visit http://update.microsoft.comfor Windows updates, and be sure to update your security software with the newest virus & spyware denitions at least weekly. 2) DO NOT use le sharing programs such as LimeWire. Free music sounds great but youll pay later to have the infection professionally removed from your computer. 3) DO NOT click on any window that indicates youre infected unless youre 100% sure its from your installed security software. 4) Visit only reputable websites ones youre heard about fromothers. So-called warez websites that oer illegal copies of software, and those oering free screensavers & background wallpapers are to be avoided.

If you do nd yourself infected with one of these rogue securityprograms your best bet is to disconnect the computer from the Internet right away and bring it to a trusted local computer service shop. Leaving it connected to the Internet will allow the rogue program to download more viruses & spyware, which could destroyyour data. On April 18- Earth Day Weekend- members of Boy Scout Troop 50 (Scoutmaster Larry Vincent) and Troop 83 (Scoutmaster Dan Travers) worked in the park. On April 25- Arbor Day Weekend- members of Boy Scout Troop 24 (Scoutmaster George Pafumi) and Cub Scout Pack 24 (Cub Leader Ed OBrian) were on hand. These scouts and their leaders provided a total of several hundred hours of community service, and their e orts will be appreciated by the growing number of people who make use of the lovely trail system in the park. (there should be a picture att ached-email if it does not come through)

The Town of Guilderland gratefully acknowledges the community service provided by several local scout troops in helping to maintain and improve the pedestrian trail system in Tawasentha Park.
