I have an idea!!!At the beginning of every

organization, of every business,of every invention, of every lifeis an idea: an idea that is good,an idea that is bad, an idea thatis yet to be proven, but still, anidea.

Look at your own life. Whoyou are is no magical accident. If you look closely, you will seethat your life represents ideasothers have had that influencedyou, for better or for worse, ideas you have had that haveinfluenced who you became, and even ideas you never evenknew had influenced you. Likethe idea of relativity. The ideaof gravity. The idea of human

equality. The idea oftime. The idea ofspace. The idea ofGod. The idea ofjustice. The idea ofmanagement.

Certainly everyone of these ideas hasinfluenced your lifeto some degree. Yethow many of these conceptshave you questioned? Perhapsin the early years of your life, you did. But as we know, theolder we get, the less time wehave for serious questions. Aswe get older, the most seriousof questions become unserious

answers; we've got ajob to do, and we doit. Yet it is these veryserious questions, these very ideas thatshape the work thatmen and women do. History teaches usthat an unchallengedidea can be a danger-

ous proposition. Still, everyday, tens of thousands ofpeople like us go to work doingsomething founded uponsomeone's idea and assume theresponsibility of makingsomething happen, whether ornot the idea is still viable, still

achievable and still sane. Here at Touro, founded on

someone's idea, we continue tocome up with new ideas. Wecontinue to repeat successfulprograms that were based onsomeone's ideas. But we arealways looking for new ideas.

It is my belief that Touro'scontinued success will comefrom you, our members. Getactive and participate in ourexisting programs. Come upwith new ideas for new pro-grams. Come and meet somenew people. See how the worldat Touro can enhance yourworld through Harmony,Friendship and Benevolence.

Kibitzing with the President

By Jeffrey Davis, Harmony Lodge

It can be safely said that Touro does notmake a move without Stevan Labush. That is because every time the Social

Committee plans an event that requirestransportation, Stevan is the person whoplans and supervises the details. Whetherit's the annual trip to Foxwoods, a trip toSix Flags or a ride to a sporting event, Stevanis the person who contracts with the buscompany and is usually standing by the doorof the bus checking the roster as membersboard.

It can also be said that Touro has grownwith Steven Labush. As a member of theBoard of Directors, Stevan held the posi-tion of Chairman of the Membership Com-mittee for several years. Under Stevan's lead-ership, the committee planned Open Houseevents and encouraged members to bringtheir friends and relatives to Touro. As aresult, Touro has had a steady stream of ini-tiates. One of the largest new memberclasses in 40 years was initiated duringStevan's tenure.

Stevan has served as a lodge vice presi-dent, a lodge president and now is in hissecond term as a Board Member. In addi-tion to serving on the Social Committee,Stevan puts his expertise as an accountantto good use by watching how Touro plansand spends its money. Stevan is currentlychairman of the Welfare Committee whichis the beneficiary of the profits from all the

raffles held at Touro events. The commit-tee decides which local charities will get do-nations from Touro. Stevan is also a mem-ber of the Budget and Finance Committeethat plans Touro's annual budget, and amember of the Community InvolvementCommittee that decides Touro's major giftgiving programs such as the recent dona-tion to Camp JORI.

Stevan and his wife Rhonda have onedaughter, Jenna, and together run BasketsGalore, a gift basket for all occasions busi-ness. Stevan is a graduate of Pilgrim HighSchool and Johnson and Wales Universityand currently is working on a masters de-gree in financial management.

Looking for some social opportunitieswith other young Jewish families, Stevanjoined Touro at the urging of some friends, including then-chairman, Art Poulten. Itwas Art who also got Stevan interested inrunning for office. Stevan noted that oneof his fondest Touro memories is that hewas initiated the same night as his father.

The Student Financial Aid Committee met on July 19,2003 to select Touro Fraternal Association’s two grantrecipients for the 2003-2004 academic year. This year

we received 11 applications for our grant program, so thetask of selecting two proved to be difficult. I am pleased toannounce that the committee chose the following individu-als to receive our annual grants.

Allison Rappoport, a 2003 Cranston West graduate anddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. Barry Rappoport, will be attendingNortheastern University in the fall and Touro member Jef-frey Horovitz, who is pursuing, full time, his master’s degreein social work at Rhode Island College. Each will be awardeda $2,500 educational grant for the upcoming academic year.

In addition, the committee awarded to nine children ofour members, interest-free student loans of $2,000 each.

I want to thank the committee members for their excel-lent work in selecting this year’s recipients. Please look for-ward to information regarding next year’s program in up-coming editions of the Tourogram.

Shalom Brothers! For those who do not know me, I am

Jeff Davis, the newly installed president of Harmony Lodge. It is a pleasureto take over the presidency from Brother Richard Glucksman. He andBrother Aaron Sherman have helped me attain the position of HarmonyLodge President.

I hope you all had a great summer and look forward to more excitingprograms from Touro. If you missed the Steak Fry, with our guest speaker,Mayor of Providence David Cicilline, you missed a great time.

Please take advantage of all that Touro has to offer. If you have an idea, seek out a lodge officer or a board member – or better yet, attend a SocialCommittee meeting, which usually meets the first Wednesday of the month.

As the summer comes to a close and the fall rapidly approaches, look forexciting new programs. We will start the fall season off with the Mayor ofCranston, Steve Laffey. It is sure to be a great night. Cranston residents:here’s your opportunity to talk about your TAX INCREASE with the Man.

On behalf of the officers of Harmony Lodge, Barry Schiff, vice presi-dent, Peter Hodosh, treasurer, and Steve Waldman, secretary, I would liketo wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year.
