Thank you to our special fundraisers!
Art Plate Fundraiser to Benefit H.O.R.S.E. In late winter, Carol Pelligra,(left), the Art Club advisor and Brian Neumeyer,(left), of the Culinary Department, at Newtown High spon-sored a fundraiser to benefit C.A.N.T.E.R. a club which does fundraisers for H.O.R.S.E. During the Fall of 2008, approximately 25 stu-dents in the art club, created and decorated a wide variety of ceramic plates. The Culinary Department provided a sandwich to go along with the plates. The plates were put up for sale to Faculty, Staff and students. H.O.R,S,E, thanks all involved, including student Alexandra Kennedy, (right), for their generous donation of $360.

H.O.R.S.E. would also like to thank our faithful volunteer, Deirdre Shea, of Litch-field, for her incredible fundraising abili-ties in donating over $700 to us this sea-son.
Romeo: Before
H.O.R.S.E. also thanks Darien High school student mentor, Lauren Littell and the Dawg program for their $300 contri-bution. Dawg is a club that is devoted to helping animals throughout Connecticut.
Special Thanks to Webster Bank for their donation of the ice cream truck for our upcoming picnic!!!!
H.O.R.S.E. would like to give a special thank you to Jessica Lynch of Shepaug Valley High school, Washington, CT. For her senior project, she organized and ran a horse show on May 9, 2009, at Red Horse Stables in Southbury. She raised $690.50 for H.O.R.S.E.! Great Job, Jessica!
Before/After Romeo, a 17 year old, Reg., TB, Gelding, came to us in March of 2009. In spite of a fractured spine and broken foot, he is recovering well.
5 “You are forever responsible for what you have tamed” Antoine de Saint- Exupery
Sometimes I think thirty years and 600 plus horses later, what has changed? First the judicial system for animals is slowly improving. People actually go to jail for abusing animals now. Second, the age of horses living has increased due to better feed, and awareness of their care. Third, the slaughter houses have all closed in the USA which means the 90,000 + horses that are thrown away each year now have to suffer a longer trip to Canada, or Mexico for slaughter. On the other hand, in 28 years of running H.O.R.S.E. of CT, I had the opportunity to work with some excellent professionals and the pleasure of knowing some terrific people who all share the love of horses. When I hear someone complain because I’m “unfriendly” or talk to my back, it’s not about you, it’s about the horses and that is what I am here for… It’s partly selfish, because I get to see them after what has happened, watch them fill out, both mentally and physically. The ones’ we know won’t make it deserve the time, (whether six days or six months), food, and love they didn’t get in the past. All animals deserve happy endings, and that’s my job!
Patty
President’s Message
A Tribute to Misty by Joan Cyrul
Misty, was in our lives for too short a time, but we are grateful for what we shared with her and what she taught us for the time he had her. Misty was always the boss, but she did it with grace, love, re-spect and dignity. She was a comfort to me when there was sad-ness, balanced me when it was a bad day, and she lit up my heart when we would play. I loved giving her kisses and hugs. She was Jim’s girl and she was always the perfect horse. Every time he would call her from the house, she would be very happy to bounce out of her stall to say hello and run up and down the pasture with her tail high and showing off her beautiful flowing mane of which she was so proud. For Lady, she was her beloved sister. She was a big part of our lives and will always remain in our hearts until we meet again. We love you Misty.

H.O.R.S.E of CT was established in 1982 and moved to its permanent home in1995. Volun-teers staff the organiza-tion and intervene on be-half of suffering equines by providing relief, recov-ery, shelter and rehabili-tation. Once a horse is physically and mentally rehabilitated, the process of seeking an adoptive home begins. All pro-spective adoptive homes are carefully screened. We require a contract
which requires that a horse shall not be bred or sold. Adoption is a lifetime commitment. H.O.R.S.E. receives no town, state or federal funding. Monies are raised through member-ships, sponsorships, charitable contributions and our own fundraising activities. The donations go directly to the horses. We investigate all cruelty complaints, (which are kept strictly confidential). If a prob-lem exists, cooperation is
first sought from the owner. Prosecution is pursued only when there is no other recourse. Horses placed in our custody are provided with immediate veteri-nary and farrier care. In addition we are available upon request to speak to interested groups to raise public awareness of our pur-pose and support.
