It takes more than a few spots of rain to discourage our gardeners. We have been out there digging, planting and weeding, but not had to do much watering and things are looking good in the vegetable garden. We have also been building a new chicken run and have ordered four Silkie hens which we are hoping to breed from once they have settled in.
Things have not progressed as well in the Peace Garden. We may not be stopped by bad weather, but the arrival of a mallard duck which built a sort of nest, laid its eggs and sat there for what seemed like ages brought us to a halt. Nothing was allowed to disturb Mrs Duck and she finally hatched four chicks which caused great excitement. The pond is right in the middle of school and everyone can enviously watch the ducklings playing and sun bathing whilst they are having to work. Once the chicks have moved on, work will resume in this garden and hopefully we should soon have seating and a water feature finished. Once again I need to thank my trusty helpers, Caroline, Therese and Mike for all their hard work and also the Year 7 girls and members of staff who feed the hens on a regular basis. If anyone would like to join us they are more than welcome. Mrs A Jones
Plans are in place for our three week expedition, at the start of the Summer break, to Puno near Lake Titticaca where 16 Year 10s will build a fence around a nursery, to protect the children from the risk of abduction. During the expedition, the group will undertake a five day Salkantay Trek, visit Cusco and spend time at Macchu Picchu – one of the seven Wonders of the World. As part of the expedition, they will undertake a 16 hour, overnight coach trip.During the expedition, the students will be responsible for organising the food, transport and accommodation on the expedition. Unless there is a risk to safety, the staff will enable the students to make decisions and will then have to cope with the consequences of those decisions. Each student will have some responsibilities – day leader, accountant, cook, transport etc. They are expected to make the decisions and make the arrangements – I hope they have been practicing their Spanish!
