Introduction
Thank you for downloading what is the third of my Rating Reports. If you have read one of my earlier
reports, you may have noticed that I’ve used a new title photo. Rich Cruse was kind enough to send
my one of his great photos for the title. Thanks, Rich – please have a look at his other photos at

This “summer” report looks forward to the July races that will decide the first wave of Kona PRO
qualifiers. For those not familiar with the “Kona Pro Rankings”, professional athletes can score points
in up to five Ironman and up to three 70.3 races during the year. The more “prestige” a race has the
more points are assigned, from 6.000 points for the winner (IM Hawaii) to 4.000 (regional
championships such as IM Melbourne, IM Germany and IM New York), down to only 2.000 or 1.000
points for the lower tier races. For 70.3s there are fewer points, from 3.000 (70.3 championship in Las
Vegas) down to 500 points for the winner. Points are assigned pretty far down the professional field, as
long as you finish a race you will score at least a few points. An athlete that wants to qualify for Kona
also has to validate his slot by finishing at least one full Ironman distance race outside of Kona. The
spots are assigned in two waves: At the end of July 40 male and 25 female slots are given out
(including a roll-down if athletes decline their slots), at the end of August another 10 male and 5
female spots.
The information is this report will help you get a better picture of how these July races are going to
influence the KPR standings. I have included the top 5 of all 2012 Kona qualifier races (starting with
IM Wales and IM Wisconsin in September 2011). Using race adjustments, I can compare results from
different courses, and I extracted the best 2012 performances and updated my TOP 10 ratings.
I also have a close look at the current KPR standings and discuss which athletes we can expect to
qualify for Kona, who needs results from the upcoming races and who probably will not make it this
year. The main contenders for Kona are already pretty obvious, so I also have a look at the winning
odds for Kona 2012 – there will probably be some movement after the summer races and you can find
updated versions on the website at trirating.com.
I hope that the material in this rating report is interesting for you and that it helps to make the July
races even more interesting. Enjoy this report and let me know if you any other analysis ideas!

The best performances are totally dominated by the race with the best field this year: IM Melbourne.
Men
Other than Melbourne athletes, only winners Dirk Bockel (IM Regensburg) and David Dellow (IM
Cairns) managed to sneak into the best performances.

KPR Standings
As discussed in the introduction, WTC will assign 40 slots for men and 25 for women at the end of
July based on KPR points. Last year, the July cutoff numbers were 3.115 for men and 5.035 for
women. There is a similar number of races to qualify this year – most of the new races such as IM
New York and IM Mont Tremblant are in August. However, it looks as if this year a higher number of
points will be needed for qualifying – at this point, with 3.100 points you are ranked 45th (Ronnie
Schildknecht), but that is before all the July races where a lot of points are for grabs. (Apparently,
athletes are racing a bit more strategic, focusing on big point races, or racing more often in 70.3s in
order to get some extra points.) The cutoff is not too easy to predict, but I’ll assume that athletes with
more than 3.800 points for the men will get a slot at the end of July. For the women, 5.100 points (as
last year) should be enough to get a July slot.

Pete Jacobs

, 6.425 points
Was injured, but recently
started and won the 70.3 in Cairns. Plans to race IM
Lake Placid.
Chris Lieto
29th, 3.310 points
Had a DNF in Coeur
d’Alene, in a recent interview he indicated he
will probably focus on the
Las Vegas 70.3
championships.
Rasmus Henning
14th, 3.440 points
I’m sure Rasmus is burning
to get back to Kona and improve on his results. A
few points from a 70.3
should be enough for him to
get enough points.
David Dellow
5.000 points
He certainly has the
potential to crack the TOP10 in Kona, but I’m not
sure if he’ll be able to do
better on his first try.
Andreas Raelert
3rd, 5.560 points
Scheduled to start in IM
Germany, has had a pretty
solid build up so far
Andy Potts
17th, 2.840 points
Andy was racing a lot of
shorter races in the first half
of the year, but now he’s on
the start list for IM Lake
Placid. Maybe he wants to
focus on Kona in the second
half of the year.
Marino Vanhoenacker
DNF, 3.230 points
Is on the startlist for IM
Germany, unless things go
wrong he will make it into
the July qualifiers.
Paul Matthews
4.500 points
Joshua Rix
4.095 points
I don’t know much about
these athletes.
Andi Boecherer
8th, 3.650 points
Had a DNF in South Africa,
wanted to start in Lanzarote
but withdrew before the
start. As far as I know, no
summer race scheduled.
Tom Lowe
11th, 2.690 points
Tom is on the start list for
Austria – a fifth place there
would give him another
1.200 points which should
be enough for him to make
it into the July qualifiers.
Sebastian Kienle
-, 3.070 points
I’m pretty sure Sebastian
hoped to have enough
points by now. He will need
another solid result, and I’m
not sure a 70.3 win will be
enough for him.
Michael Raelert
3.830 points
He’s right on the edge of the
“qualifying bubble” as I see
it. His premier race in Kona
will be anticipated, but I
think he’s in a similar
position to David Dellow:
TOP10, but probably not a
candidate to win.
Faris Al-Sultan
10th, 3.589 points
He’s on the start list for
Austria, so as long he
finishes, he’ll make it to Kona. It remains to be seen
how fresh he’s going to be
in October – in 2011 he was
cooked after winning IM
Germany.
Matty Reed
27th, 2.215
Not sure if Kona 2011 was
his one try on the Ironman
distance. Couldn’t find him on any IM start list.
Justin Daerr
-, 3.020 points
“JD” has a great result in
Texas and would probably
race well in the Kona heat. Not sure if he’s interested to
qualify and what his plans
are.
Daniel Fontana
12th, 3.520 points
Also on the Austria start
list.
Maik Twelsiek
22nd
, 2.430
On the list for Lake Placid,
but even a win there will
probably not be enough to
qualify.

Kona Predictions
Even if the Kona field is not “official” yet, based on the KPR standings and my rating system, I can
put together a start list based on the results so far and my rating system. There may be some movement
on the cut-off-line, but the names of the main players are already quite certain. Based on the field and
their previous results, I can then calculate the odds for winning in Kona.
Men
Based on his recent results in Kona and Melbourne,
Crowie is the clear favorite. Here are the current
winning odds:
Craig Alexander 34%
Andreas Raelert 12%
Mario Vanhoenacker 12%
ChrisMcCormack 9%
Pete Jacobs 7%
Eneko Llanos 7%
Cameron Brown 6%
Paul Amey 2%
The graph shows how these winning odds have changed over time. Main events that lead to changes:
IM Melbourne
This lead to the “jump” in Crowie’s odds and the inclusion of Cameron Brown.
IM Cairns
The move of the Cairns race from Challenge to Ironman gave Macca a way of validating his
spot. His actual result was okay considering he raced mainly on Olympic distance training, but
was a bit sub-par for him and lead to lowering his statistical odds.
The summer races will probably lead to some shifts in the odds. I’m very interested how the athletes
that have not yet validated their spots are going to do (Andreas, Marino, Pete).
Women
After Chrissie decided she’s not going to race an IM
in 2012, Rinnie took over the frontrunner role:
Mirinda Carfrae 31%
Caroline Steffen 18%
Rachel Joyce 14%
Leanda Cave 12%
Mary Beth Ellis 9%
Catriona Morrison 5%
The main events that produced changes:
Chrissie’s decision not to race
IM Melbourne
Increasing the chances of Caroline while decreasing the chances of Rinnie.
IM Texas
with good performances by Mary Beth Ellis and Rachel Joyce

For each of these races, I will list the athletes on the start list with their current ratings and expected
finishing times, and I will also show who the athletes with the best winning odds are. The rating is a
weighted average of the adjusted finishing times, so if an athlete has only a few but good races he will
have a pretty good rating. But his winning chances may be smaller compared to an experienced athlete
with a slower rating, but with a small number of great races and a few slower ones.
One constant frustration for me is the quality of the start lists:
Often, they are very difficult to find.
When they exist, they are not quite up-to-date. Athletes that are injured and have decided not to
race are not taken off the list.
With the Ironman Pro Membership, athletes can race as many IMs as they like. To be on the
safe side, some athletes register for every IM race, even if they are just a week or two apart.
Some athletes decide to enter a race just a few days before the start.
I’m sure that I’m not the only one who sees this as a problem. I think race directors and/or WTC
should put some effort into providing up-to-date start lists and minimize the changes after a certain
cut-off point (say two weeks before a race). Also, there should be a standard way of finding a list of
Pros registered for a certain race.
