Letter from Bernie

Dear Friends,

As I write this letter I sense sounds emanating from the parish: shiftings and mutterings, sighing and giggling, sombre tones and light laughter. Something is afoot! These low frequency murmurings are of course the force behind the Parish Fête.

Yes, it’s that time of year again and while the heroic planning team is in the process of drawing their preparations to a point of readiness, we are all grateful for their commitment. Anyone who has been involved in the Parish Fête on previous occasions will be aware of the herculean effort it takes to make the fête such a popular success. Please do support the event by donating items for the stalls and if you have a few hours to spare on the day, your help would be invaluable. Items for sale can be left at the reception area in TPC and details of stallholders and phone numbers can be found in the magazine.

Last week the BBC announced that winter will last until the end of May. Never mind – the sun will then have eight days to practise being where it is required to be on 9th June when people from across our local community will gather here for a great family day of fun and feasting.

On a more serious note, as we go to print, the preparations for our Parish Confirmation are being finalized. The service will be held on Sunday 20th May in Christ Church and Archbishop Michael Jackson will confirm fifteen candidates. As these young people gather to confirm the vows made on their behalf at baptism, we pray that they will feel supported and encouraged by our parish and that their lives will be enriched by their Christian faith.

We have had a very sad time in the parish with many funerals taking place over a short few weeks. Alongside all this sadness, the people of this parish brought great waves of support and compassion to the bereaved. However, the funeral is just the first step on the long road to healing and we continue in our prayers to remember everyone who has lost a loved one.

The process of appointing a new rector is moving forward at a steady pace. The vacancy meanwhile has brought out the best in everyone involved in the on-going work of the parish. I believe that this period of united teamwork has strengthened all of us, and it has created new bonds and a sense of togetherness that will benefit the parish (and the new rector) in countless ways.

With best wishes for a great summer!

Parish Organisations

Taney Lawn Tennis ClubThe new season opened on Saturday 28th April at Old Rectory Park and continues most week nights and Saturday afternoons. The popular ‘coaching’ sessions for younger members are in progress during May/June. All our parishioners and friends are welcome and there are special membership packages for families. The Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6.30pm and on Saturday afternoons from 4.00pm. Details from Hon. Sec. Margaret 087 232 2308.

The 2012 ‘At Home’ will be held on Saturday 8th September. Margaret Nevin, Hon. Sec.

Taney Parish Indoor Bowling ClubOur season came to an end with our Captain’s Dinner at the Goat Grill at the end of April. This year we included an extra toast to celebrate forty years of bowling in Taney and we were pleased that some of our former members were able to join us at the dinner. We presented cups to the winners of our club competitions with the Reg Acton cup for pairs going to Jean Richardson and Al Connor and the Ann Galbraith cup for singles to Henry Wiseman.

We have since held our A.G.M. and the officers elected for the next season are Captain, John McCoy, Hon. Secretary Myrtle McCoy, Hon. Treasurer Ossie Baily, Hon. Competition Secretary Olive Bryan and Committee, Adeline Dawson, Bill Scales, Linda Wilson and Stanley Rowe (ex officio).

We are already thinking ahead to next season and plan to recommence on Monday 3rd September. We play bowls on Monday and Thursday evenings and on Tuesday mornings. We look forward to welcoming new members and further information is available from any member of the committee listed above or from the Parish Office.

By the time this is published we will have performed our evening of drama with two one- act plays, “Idols” directed by Lynn Pennefather and “Under the Balcony” directed by John Byrne. These were two very different plays and we hope that the audience enjoyed them as much as we did in staging them. Again, for variety and to compliment the nature of the plays, to make it a more intimate setting, we staged this event in the Minor Hall. Right back to where it all started 21 years ago!!

Our AGM was held on 31st May when another bumper year of performances was recorded. Our thanks to all involved.

The Drama Society will also be assisting at the Fête this year and any bottles would be appreciated (they usually are but this time they’ll be for the Bottle Stall!).

Hard to believe, (or is it?), that we staged the first production of the Taney Drama Society way back in 1991. We’ve had some fun in the meantime and hope we’ve provided no small amount of entertainment for our loyal followers in Taney. We hope to celebrate our coming of age in September and if anyone who was involved in the past, knows anyone who was involved and who might like to meet up again with past and present members, or any new aspiring members, we’d love

to hear from you!! When we look back over our members list, it makes for some reading and so many have contributed to Society’s history to date. We appreciate all the effort by so many.

Details of ‘The Do’ will be announced later but in the meantime, just contact any of the Committee.

Taney Drama Society

Bible Study & Prayer GroupLed by Bunty Strong continues each week. The Study & Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 10.30am after the mid-week service.

Care GroupAn enjoyable afternoon was had by the members of our Care Group on Palm Sunday which began with a Service of Holy Communion in Christ Church, followed by supper in the Parish Centre. Many thanks to all those who organised the afternoon’s activities.

Ranger Ramblings

As the 2011-2012 season draws to a close, Taney Mother’s Union can look back on a very successful year during which we welcomed such interesting speakers as former Supreme Court Judge Catherine McGuinness, journalist and T.D. Shane Ross, Olive van der Flier of the charity ‘Compassion’ and local historian John Lennon, quite apart from the fun we had at our in-house meetings and annual dinner. However, in the past few weeks we have been deeply saddened by the deaths of two of our much loved members, Lynda Welsh and Pauline Motyer. They will be remembered with great affection in the Mothers’ Union. During the summer, the M.U. Committee will prepare a new, and we hope, stimulating programme for the autumn. Already, The Hon. Mrs. Justice Susan Denham, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, has agreed to speak to us on the evening Tuesday 9th October 2012, and we hope to have much more of interest to offer our members and Taney friends. Remember - as well as educating and entertaining ourselves, we are part of an international charity which engenders funds for social and educational projects for people in Ireland and all over the world whose lives are harder than our own. If you wish to support an important cause while also enjoying yourself, do come along to one of our meetings, which are advertised on posters throughout the parish. We will always be very pleased to see you. Contact the parish office or phone Carol at 01-2942366 for further information.

Locke’s Distillery Museum

Hunter’s Hotel, Wicklow

Mothers’ Union

It was a bright start with the weather on our side for our last outing to Kilbeggan, where we arrived to enjoy delicious homemade scones, jam and coffee in “The Pantry Restaurant” before our tour of the distillery next door. A great start to the day! Locke’s Distillery Museum is a museum of what is believed to be the oldest working licensed distillery in the world (established in 1757). Our guide, a fount of knowledge, had a very strong voice so everyone could hear clearly despite the sound of the Brusna river flowing below. The three natural raw materials required for distillation were readily available in the area - turf from the bogs, locally grown grain and the pure water from the Brusna River. The Brusna water is said to contain minerals from the limestone catchment area and the bogs which added a distinctive flavour to the whiskey. We were able to sample this flavour and happily continued on to the Bloomfield House Hotel on the shore of Lough Ennell for a superb lunch in a bright and airy dining room. To complete the

day, we called into Belvedere House and gardens and leisurely explored the house and walked through the parkland gardens and beside the lake before returning to the bus for the trip home. Our next trip will take place on 30th June leaving Taney at 12 noon. By popular request we are going for a shorter day to Hunter’s Hotel for lunch with a drive home via Lough Dan if the weather is favourable. Details are available through the Parish Office. Everyone is welcome.

It is with great sadness that we remember our good friend Pauline Motyer who passed away recently. Pauline was a valued member of the Rangers Committee for many years, organising outings and sharing ideas for new places to go. We all had fun working on the committee and got to know Pauline very well as a good friend whom we will greatly miss.

Irish Council of ChurchesOn 29th March the Irish Council of Churches held its 2012 AGM in Taney Parish Centre. A service of worship was held in Christ Church, Taney. Wesley Senior School Choir and Taney National School Orchestra took part in the service. The organist was Paul Mullan, a fifth-year student in Wesley College. Pupils from Holy Cross National School and Taney National School exhibited pictures on the theme: ‘Working together for God’.

Eco Congregation Ireland (ECI) encourages churches of all denominations throughout Ireland to adopt an Eco approach to worship, lifestyle, property and finance management, community outreach and contact with the developing world.

ECI is a project initiated by the Churches in Society Forum – a standing committee of the Inter Church Meeting. The Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland, the Presbyterian Church, the Methodist Church and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) are all involved. Eco Congregation Ireland offers resources and support to assist churches take practical eco action in the context of their Christian Faith. We have an Eco Congregation Ireland noticeboard in the Parish Centre. The ECI Monthly Newletter is displayed there.

Eco Congregation Ireland would support us in Taney Parish to set up an Eco Group here in our Parish, where

we could explore and learn about environmental matters. In particular, the importance of conserving the earth’s finite reserves of water, oil, gas etc and how a changing environment will impact on our lives in the future. This would provide a practical way of removing a sense of powerlessness, enrich our church and community with biblically based material and practical ideas and suggestions. This group may also interest those who belonged to the Taney Third World Group.

Anyone interested in starting and joining a Parish Eco Group, please give your name to the Parish Office or contact me, Carol Newburn. [email protected]. Look at www.ecocongregationireland.com

REASONSBecause she was loved for herselfShe sometimes wore a faded, shapeless dressing-gownat breakfast. She seldom wore make-up.She scorned high heelsand she pulled atrocious faces to make him laugh. She allowed him to see her in leggings and unflatteringthick socks and trainers. But she wasn’t worriedFor she knew she was loved for herself. When other girls chatted him up, and it was difficult to overlook him with his aura of youth and excitement, she was never jealousFor a compliment to either was a compliment to both. And, anyway, she knew she was loved for herself. There was no element of suspicion between them. They played no tricks.Diverse aspects of life split them apart during the weekbut at weekends they were reunited. They belonged.Experts would have said that they sub-consciously prioritised their togetherness and, by so doing, no part of their relationship was disfunctioning.BUTThe fact that she was young, genuinely blonde and had a sweetchiseled face may have had some bearing on Why she was Loved for Herself.

Taney Parish Donations to Christian Outreach and CharitiesThe Parish financial report gives details of Parish Income and Expenditure. In the midst of all the figures and data on major Parish projects and day-to-day income and expenses, there is a report on our giving to Mission, Charities, to our Christian partners overseas and those in need. As a Christian community, we in Taney have always given priority to our support of organisations at home or overseas, who give help and relief to those in need and who are our partners in mission and compassion. In 2010, we gave €51,000 and last year (2011) we gave €50,000. This giving is spread across a range of mission partners and at home, a range of charities, hospitals and community projects are included.

Confirmation 2012We look forward to having Archbishop Michael Jackson with us in Taney when he will confirm ten of our young people from the Parish, two from Wesley College, two from Kilternan Parish and one candidate from Tullow Parish on Sunday, 20th May at 10.15am in Christ Church, Taney.

‘One World’ Lenten LunchesThe Lenten Lunches held in the Parish Centre were very popular and really well supported, not only by our own parishioners but by our Roman Catholic and Methodist neighbours. There was a tremendous buzz every Friday as the team, gathered by Beryl Tilson, sprang into action. Our thanks to all who helped prepare the soups and bakes and served at tables and to everyone who supported the lunches. We enjoyed them all. The proceeds of €5,550 go to Trócaire and Christian Aid.

Christian Aid Week ServiceFamily Service on Sunday May 13th was very special, with a baptism, prayers and readings led by children from Taney School and Sunday School and a talk from Sorley McCaughey, Policy & Advocacy Officer, Christian Aid. The Bible Study and Prayer Group together with ‘One World’ Group hosted a reception after the Service.

Thank YouThank you to our Churchwardens for the last year. In St. Nahi’s – Edith and Mark Douglas assisted by Mavis Johnson, Hazel Armstrong and William Dixon have shared their tasks with humour and a ready welcome. In Christ Church, Robert and Esther Walsh and Enid and Malachi Bennett-O’Neill assisted by Julie Maloney, Jill Long, Carol Eggers and Pat O’Doherty have given tremendous service. They have been helpful, co-operative, always welcoming with a great team around them, served up with lashings of good humour warming the heart even on a wet Sunday. Special thanks are due to all our Churchwardens as they have generously agreed to serve for a further year. This will provide invaluable continuity for the new incumbent.

The VacancyThe formal process for filling the vacancy has now started. The advertisement was placed in early March and the date for receipt of applications has passed. The Parochial Nominators, Roger Brooks, Susan Hood, Jim O’Neill and Beryl Tilson, are now bound by a confidentiality agreement. So it is best not to ask how they are getting on as they will not be able to discuss the matter. They have our support and our prayers as they undertake this very important task for the future of the Parish.

The work on refurbishment of the Rectory has commenced and is currently on schedule to be completed by the end of June. The internal décor will not be completed until after the appointment of a new Rector.

A grant has been approved for some of the work on the Rectory related to the “Better Energy Homes Scheme” This is good news as it will assist in covering, in a small way, some of the cost of the work to be done.

Junior ChoirThe Junior Choir has had a very busy and successful year, and continues to bring its own energy to our regular Family Services and to special occasions throughout the year. Highlights over this past year have been the farewell services for both Des Sinnamon and Niall Sloane, and our Harvest Family service when we were joined by the boy choristers of St Patrick’s Cathedral. The children also sang for the Care Group Christmas party which was a great treat for the older members of our Parish.

Wednesday afternoon practices are a lively affair. We welcomed a record number of new members this year who have all worked hard to learn new songs and how to sing as part of a choir. The final Family Service will be on June 10th after which the Junior Choir will take a well-earned rest! Choir practice will recommence on Wednesday September 5th. New members are always welcome - if you are in 2nd class or above and you love singing, then come along and join us!Suzanne Chadwick 087 757 4156

20 Taney News Fete 2012

“This is the best day of my life!”Yes, Cubs are prone to hyperbole! It is very gratifying though to have such an ebullient validation of a day’s activities: time spent in the forest on Saggart Hill with the Dundrum 20th Cub Scouts, setting and following trails in intermittent snow and hail showers! Followed by lighting fires (safely) and cooking flat bread, chicken and sausages. Was Al Fresco a cub?

We started this year’s pack meetings in September with a much diminished group due to the natural promotion of our older Cubs last June who would be taking up other pursuits from Scouting to sports or playstations.

Having not yet taken on the new group of Beaver graduates, as leaders we had a little time to set out the years activities, mulling over what worked last year, what we needed more of and what we needed less of. More outdoors, camping, hiking and fun.

The new Cubs were, as expected, shy and reserved until they found their feet. They brought new life into the pack, all eager to learn new things and give Bear Grylls a run for his money. Meanwhile the Leaders’ annual challenge began, to learn the new names and idiosyncrasies of the new group while developing the abilities and leadership of the older Cubs.

Friday night meetings (6.30 -8.00), games to be played, skills to be learned, merit badges to be earned. It is a subtle mix of learning by doing, competition and cooperation, physical and mental which brings everyone along and it is a privilege as a leader to see the changes that take place in boys between the ages of 8 and 11. All with different abilities and skills, not measured against each other but against their own progress – The motto “always do your best” driving the leaders to encourage each one.

We are an “outdoor” organisation but the one thing you can’t plan is the weather. In general we have had a fairly good track record with the weather for our events but we are also firm believers that “there is no such thing as bad weather - just inappropriate clothing”. This season we shared wild sausages cooked under the MegaWak in the forests behind the Hell Fire Club while nature enveloped us in what must have been one of the wettest days of the winter. The MegaWak is our light-weight but nonetheless huge tarpaulin with which we create a rough and ready shelter to accommodate the entire troop when it is particularly inclement. It is a credit to all who come out on such trips and forsake the fireside and we are deeply grateful to all those parents who help

out with lifts to and from our hikes and camps.

Earlier this year we walked the Spink loop in Glendalough on what must have been one of the warmest and sunniest days of spring and all who participated were rewarded with amazing views and a huge sense of satisfaction. The Cubs who attended even got a badge for doing so well.Sun or rain, when you’re out in the air what matters is the company, memorable hikes are a sharing of fun, camaraderie and achievement.

Dundrum 20th Scout Group (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers) are extremely privileged to have our own Cottage and Camp Site at Beckett’s Field on Saggart Hill and it was here at our Easter Camp that we had the fantastic day out in the forest. The ensuing night saw temperatures drop to minus four degrees centigrade – weren’t we lucky to have the refurbished bunk rooms and new toilet block! The next morning (after defrosting the breakfast ware) the cubs returned to the forest (with axes) to make bivouacs and complete two days of electronics free bliss. As we prepare for our final Camp of the year we could only wish for another approving outburst amid the mix of wood smoke, sizzling chicken and good company.

Scouting News

This year the 39 Beavers who belong to 20th Dublin (Dundrum) learned about migration. Each Beaver joined one of six lodges—Whooper Swans, Redwings, Cuckoos, Arctic Terns, Barn Swallows and Pale-Bellied Brent Geese—and became an expert in the life of his lodge bird. We celebrated this process with a specially commissioned Migration badge. Thanks to the creativity of our dedicated leaders, nearly every Monday meeting had a highlight. In October we had a wonderfully crazy Halloween party. In November the Beavers learned to play the kazoo. In December, the Beavers decorated the big Christmas tree with silhouettes of Whooper Swans, just as those birds were arriving in Ireland. Other great evenings included Australia Night, the Silly Olympics and the Taney Parish Hall Bug Hunt.

Beavers talked about looking after themselves, each other and the earth and, in the process, earned the Sharing and Caring badge. They also earned the Games and Our World badges.

We had hikes to Knocksink Woods, Beckettsfield and Larch Hill. The third class boys and five leaders had a camp out on the nicest day in May. Finally, all the Beavers sold quizzes for a special fundraiser for improvements to the Beckettsfield Cottage.

At the close of this year, 15 Beavers will move up to Cubs. We’ll also say a wistful goodbye to four great leaders: Tom Heerey, Declan Markey, Jane Glen and, most especially, Kerry Ryder, who has spent six years with our troop.

Stay tuned: Taney Beavers will be back in September with some new boys,

some new leaders and more adventures.

Beckettsfield

We are having an active year both in the Parish Centre where we meet from 8.00 to 10.00 every Friday evening and outdoors. We continue the tradition of using the forests and mountain tracks. An overnight hike saw us hiking from Ticknock to Cruagh where we slept rough in the shelter of the trees. An evening hike saw us doing the same route in reverse. Two weekends were spent in Beckettsfield making full use of the upgraded cottage. We were delighted to help in setting up the swingboat, greasy pole, rope bridge and watch tower for the use of families and friends who came to celebrate the reopening. The preferred camp was our customary visit to Powerscourt at Easter. I am delighted to report that our scouts were the envy of the leaders of other troops. They were disciplined and demonstrated their skills in

setting up their kitchen, tents etc. They were also one of the very few troops who could cook for themselves. Be proud of yourselves lads, keep the flag flying. We are in the process of planning a canoeing and camping weekend for the beginning of June. After that we plan on a bowling and quasar night out. We intend to finish the year with Summer Camp at Petersburgh on Lough Mask. Finally if you are 11 or older and would like to make new friends, join in the craic and play games on Friday nights give us a call, you will be most welcome and won’t be disappointed. You will be able to learn skills that will help you when we go hiking, camping, canoeing and on survival trips. Come on, get out with us and enjoy the outdoors in ways.you never thought possible.

Scouts

Our Scout Cottage on our campsite near Saggart was closed three years ago for safety reasons. We took this as an opportunity to have a fresh look at this magnificent facility which has been a jewel for the last 30 years. Every Beaver, Cub, Scout and Leader and visitor that set foot in the place fell in love with it, especially the bunk rooms and the large living room with big open fire not to mention the smokey atmosphere.

We must have a safe building with separate facilities for boys and girls and of course we have to look after our leaders who never had facilities and had to bed down in the living room on the floor and couches. Our architect Michael Hamilton (former parishioner and scout) drew up plans so that we would comply with current Fire and Disabled Access Regulations and provide the accommodation we require into the future. The renovations were divided into two phases, (1) upgrade the existing building, and (2) build the required extension.

We have been able to complete phase one from our limited resources (and a little extra). We fireproofed the ceilings, replaced and widened doors, put in fire escapes and fire alarms, en suite toilet shower and washbasins with hot water, a new septic tank and even laid the foundations and floor slab for the extension. Now that the building is compliant with all regulations the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and other Troops have taken up residence. We would welcome enquiries from other Troops and Youth organisations.

We now have to raise funds to build phase two which will provide a disabled toilet and shower, a leaders bunkroom and a second bunkroom for boys or girls both en suite. Donations of cash or sponsorship would be appreciated. If you or a friend have leftovers from building a house or extension we might be able to make use of them i.e. 9 inch cavity and 4 inch solid blocks, roofing timber and slates.

Taney News Fete 2012 23

The morning begins with the light of a new day dawning and shining in the window. I get up at 7:45, go down stairs, let Bill and Bess the dogs out and put the kettle on for breakfast. Tim and I have breakfast together and chat over any plans that may be in place for the day. By 8:30 I’m off on a walk with the dogs down to the park.

I retired two years ago having worked for 26 years in orthopaedics, spare part department, in Mt Carmel Hospital. This I really miss, not only the structure of working but the camaraderie of my work mates.

However, in 1998, after two years study, I was commissioned as a Diocesan Lay Reader. This gave me a licence to preach and assist in services both in the parish and in the diocese….. Since Des retired and Niall and Stephen were appointed to different parishes life has got much busier!! I am probably as busy now as when I was working in Mt Carmel.

The parish week begins with a meeting with the Bernie, our Resident Priest. We try to meet early in the week to discuss the pastoral needs of the parish.I return home around lunch time for a bowl of soup with Tim. After which, I sit down with my list of names and addresses armed with a Dublin map….very necessary as my sense of direction leaves a lot to be desired!

Then I take off. I will visit possibly two or three parishioners in an ordinary day. If it’s a hospital visit, my visits are timed according to the official visiting hours. When visiting people in their homes, usually I wouldn’t call ahead. I just knock on the door. If it is not a good time, or if someone would prefer not to have a visit, that’s fine.

Generally, however, people are delighted with a visit. Visits usually last about half an hour but it can be difficult to find a balance. I don’t want to rush a visit or outstay my welcome! It is a great privilege to be allowed into people’s homes, I am there as a listening ear, and it’s lovely to get to know people whom I have previously only known on a ‘hello, cheerio’

basis. However, sometimes a person will request help or support with a particular issue. So, with their permission, I refer this to Bernie.

It’s important that people know that the Parish is there for them. If anyone needs a visit either at home or in hospital, they should ring the parish office and let us know.On the way home, hopefully, I might be able to pop into Tim’s 98 year old mother, Joyce, a wonderful little lady. You would love her….. I normally get home around 5:00. I attend to only the necessary household chores. Then I prepare dinner, feed the dogs and catch up with what is happening in the family…. We have just had our ninth grandchild.

If I’m lucky and it’s a nice evening, I might have an hour to potter in the garden. Gardening is my safety valve. If I feel hassled it calms me. Needless to say, it’s Tim’s grass cutting that makes the garden look great! Typical!!

Monday evening the bell ringers gather in the belfry for a practice. I love bell-ringing. It is a bit like singing, it uplifts the spirits and it is a great way of welcoming people to church on a Sunday morning. Ringing a bell is a bit like life……once you get the balance right you have some chance of sending a clear message.

I arrive home at 9pm when I sit down and watch a bit of rubbish such as ‘East Enders’ or maybe something Tim and I had taped earlier to watch together. It could even be Golf!! I start going to bed around 10pm. The table is set for breakfast, the dogs are put out and settled for the night. If it’s a cold night I fill a hot water bottle. Up to bed; wash the teeth, kneel down to thank the Lord for all blessings and put into his care my family, friends and the world. Crawl into bed beside Tim…all is well. We both read for a while although it is not unknown that either one of us might drop off to sleep with book in hand and spectacles still on the end of the nose!
