Schuylkill Health System Joins Blood service programEffective July 1, 2013, Miller-Keystone Blood Center will serve as blood service provider to the Schuylkill

Health System (Pottsville, PA). In this capacity, Miller-Keystone will serve as the sole supplier of blood

products and patient transfusion services to the Health System and residents of the community.

“We are very pleased to be working with the team from Miller-Keystone Blood Center to make sure our

patients have the blood products they need, whether it be for surgical procedures or other services offered

by Schuylkill Health,” said John E. Simodejka, President/Chief Executive Officer of Schuylkill Health.

MKBC now serves as the sole blood supplier to 27 hospitals in 12 Pennsylvania and New Jersey counties.

“Miller-Keystone Blood Center is proud to be selected as the exclusive blood provider to the Schuylkill

Health System,” says Joseph Yelo, Vice President, Administration, Miller-Keystone Blood Center. “The

Blood Center looks forward to working with the Health System, as well as businesses, schools and

The Blood Center’s 19th annual signature fundraiser,

the “Cruise to the Greek Isles Aboard the Life-Line” took place on Friday, May 10. More than 450

passengers boarded at Bethlehem’s ArtsQuest™ Center at SteelStacks™, which was magically-

transformed into an exotic sea vessel traveling to

a land of ancient history and tranquil beauty.

Once aboard, an evening of great food, fun and

entertainment was enjoyed by all, as passengers

were treated to specially prepared Cruise delicacies,

action-packed casino games and an exciting live

auction. A silent auction and raffle were held,

while entertainment was provided courtesy of DJ

Tom Gentis and the Aegean Island Dance Group.

Honorary captain of the 2013 Cruise was Ann

Baum, Vice President-Lehigh Valley, Capital

BlueCross, and guest emcees for the evening

were Sam Malone of Cat Country 96.1 and

Tori Thomas of WLEV 100.7. In addition to

the tireless efforts of this year’s Cruise committee,

dozens of volunteers supported the event serving

in a variety of roles.

Blood center honors Area High Schools Over 7,000 individuals, including principals, teachers, student council presidents, athletes, musicians,

and other students participated in saving lives throughout our community this school year as part of

Miller-Keystone Blood Center’s 2012-2013 high school campaign.

The success of this year’s high school campaign was celebrated at recognition events held at Barnhouse Village (Bath), Mahoning Valley Country Club (Lehighton) and Reading Country Club (Reading).

86 high schools held blood drives this year. More than 6,000 units of blood were collected, providing the gift of life for more than 15,000 patients at hospitals throughout the Pennsylvania and New Jersey counties served by MKBC.

new application enables donors to Schedule Appointments OnlineBeginning July 2013, donors will be able to perform a variety of activities online from the comfort of their own home!

When donors create their personal online profile via the Blood Center’s website (GIVEaPINT.org), they will have the ability to schedule donation appointments, check their donation history, review their cholesterol levels and see previous wellness related test results from their prior donation.

The new program will also help our blood drive coordinators! If you are running a blood drive, we will be able to provide you with online tools to assist in organizing a successful blood drive.

The Blood Center looks forward to implementing this new program, and hopes it will be an easier and more convenient way for our donors to continue to save lives in our community! n

MKBc recognizes VolunteersThe Blood Center recently honored its volunteers with special

recognition events held in Allentown and Wyomissing.

During 2012, more than 425 volunteers donated over 27,000 hours

of service, supporting the Blood Center’s crucial mission as the

exclusive blood supplier to our regional hospitals. The volunteers,

which included retirees, business people and high school/college

students, assist in a variety of positions including donor aids, canteen

attendants, telephone reminder callers, special event support and

office support. These volunteers assist in the operations at the Blood

Center’s sites in Allentown, Bethlehem, Brodheadsville, Easton,

Hazleton, Lionville, Quakertown, Reading and Wind Gap; and at over

2,000 annual blood mobiles throughout eastern Pennsylvania and

western New Jersey.

Volunteers with hours of service ranging from 100 to 15,000 hours

were recognized, including the following volunteers, who achieved

new levels over 1,000 hours and were presented with special

recognition awards:

Scholarship Recipients named for 2013Miller-Keystone Blood Center recently named the recipients

of the 2013 High School Blood Donor Recruitment Scholar-

ship. Created in 2002, this award is designed to encourage

and reward high school blood drive chair persons for their

efforts in stimulating interest and increasing the available blood

supply within the 11 counties served by MKBC. This year,

86 high schools ran blood drives, and 43 scholarship applica-

tions were received, with 15 students selected to receive

scholarship awards.

recognizing Someone SpecialCongratulations to MARY DAVISON, LYNNE HANDWERK, JACK EROH, ELISE SLIFER, SHARON SPAGNOLA and HANK KuNKEL for making a

difference at MKBC through their continuous volunteer work!

MARY has been a volunteer at MKBC since February 2012. In

just her first 10 months of volunteering with us, she has accumu-

lated 183 hours as a Canteen Attendant and Donor Aide. Mary is

enthusiastic, extremely cooperative and willing to go to mobile

drives, no matter the distance. Mary enjoys the opportunity to

meet such nice and interesting people, whether it be donors or

fellow volunteers.

LYNNE joined MKBC in January of 2011, accumulating 184 hours

as a Canteen Attendant. Lynne is a personable and versatile

volunteer, volunteering at other MKBC functions such as the

Cruise, our annual fundraising event, Health Fair and taking

minutes for the Information Systems department. Lynne says the

most interesting part of volunteering in the Canteen is meeting

all the different donors, and learning so many interesting stories

about their lives.

JACK began volunteering at MKBC in January of 2011, accumu-

lating 257 hours as a Canteen Attendant. Jack is a reliable, timely

volunteer who has exceptional conversational abilities. Jack has

also been a blood donor for over 30 years, donating over 19

gallons in that time. Jack started his volunteering career with

Miller Keystone back in the 90’s when he participated in a

Coordinator Committee that was in force at that time, and came

back after his retirement since he had enjoyed it so much.

ELSIE has been a volunteer at MKBC since September of

2011, accumulating 200 in that time as a Canteen Attendant.

Elsie is willing to fill in an occasional last minute openings

and also stays late if there isn’t anyone to cover the shift

following hers. Elsie loves volunteering because she gets to

meet so many wonderful and different people. Talking and

building relationships with the donors is her favorite part

of volunteering.

SHARON joined MKBC in September of 2011 as a Canteen

Attendant where she has accumulated 200 hours. Sharon

is always willing to fill in where she is needed and is always

reliable and timely. Sharon loves volunteering because she

gets to meet so many wonderful and different people. Talking

and building relationships with the donors is her favorite

part of the job.

HANK has been a volunteer at MKBC since January of 2011,

accumulating 268 hours as a Canteen Attendant. Hank is

devoted to donors, pleasant and reliable. In 2009, Hank

began donating and has accumulated 2 gallons in that time.

Hank loves interacting with donors and says that donors

come from so many different backgrounds; every time he

volunteers it is a learning experience.

Our warmest thanks to Mary, Lynne, Jack, Elise, Sharon and Hank for their dedication in continuing to save lives in our community

though volunteerism! n

Distributor Association (HIDA) and the HIDA Laboratory Council.

“It is a privilege to be selected as the next President and CEO of

HCSC,” said Castagna. “The organization has an outstanding reputa-

tion both in the community, and within the respective industries it

serves. I look forward to working with the Boards of Directors and

staff to help continue the tradition of providing quality, cost-effective

programs and services to the healthcare organizations we serve.”

Castagna officially began his duties on July 1.

BuSSE has been appointed Senior Vice President

and Chief Operating Officer. With more than 20

years of blood banking experience, she joined Miller-

Keystone Blood Center in 2012, serving as Director

of Quality Assurance.

WILLSON has been named Vice President of Fiscal

Affairs. He joined the Blood Center in 2003, most

recently serving as Director of Business Manage-

ment Services. n

Blood Center has announced that Peter J. Castagna, Jr. has been appointed

President-CEO. He succeeds J. Michael

Lee, DBA, FACHE, who recently retired

after a 33-year tenure.

CASTAGNA has more than 25 years of ex-

perience in the healthcare support service

and supply chain environment. He most

recently served as the Vice President of Health Systems for Thermo

Fisher Scientific. Previous positions include Chief Operating Officer

of Verispan LLC; President for Acute Care with McKesson Medical

Surgical; and Eastern Regional Vice President for Owens and Minor.

“HCSC’s Board of Directors was fortunate to interview a number of

qualified candidates for the CEO position,” said Everitt F. Binns, Ph.D.,

Chairman of the Board. “Peter’s education and experience clearly

placed him at the top of the list, and we are confident that he is the

right individual to lead HCSC and its affiliates on this next chapter in

its history.”

Castagna is a graduate of Montclair State College (NJ) with a

Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, and the Stillman School of

Business at Seton Hall University with a Masters Degree in

Kristin’s storyI was diagnosed with breast cancer in

2010, went through chemo, surgery and

radiation, and there was no evidence of

the disease by early 2011. I really thought

I was “in the clear”. In March of 2012,

when my husband and I were on vaca-

tion in the Dominican Republic, I became

short of breath and my heart was racing. It only got worse as days

passed, and by my 3rd day down there I could barely walk 20

feet without needing to sit and rest. We went to the doctor at the

resort, who sent us by ambulance to the local hospital in Punta

Cana. Blood work showed my white blood cell count was

extremely high, and my hemoglobin, hematocrit and platelets

were dangerously low. I needed blood and platelet transfusions

before I could even get on a plane to come home. That process

took three days, several phone calls to and from the U.S. Embassy

and a 3 ½-hour ambulance ride to Santo Domingo. There is no

Miller-Keystone Blood Center in the Dominican Republic and

quite honestly, had the Embassy not intervened, I’m not sure I

would have even made it off that island. Upon returning home and

checking into the hospital, a bone marrow biopsy confirmed our

worst fears – I had acute myleoid leukemia, which I contracted

as a result of the life-saving chemo treatments I had for breast

cancer two years earlier. Over the next several months, I had

several rounds of dose-dense chemo that was successful in put-

ting the leukemia into remission, but also left me needing many,

many packed red blood cells and platelet transfusions. I never had

to worry whether or not I was going to get my blood or platelets.

After spending many scary days in the hospital in the E.R., you

can’t even imagine what a blessing and a relief it was to know

Miller-Keystone was there for me. I am alive and well today due in

no small part to the Miller-Keystone Blood Center and its donors.
