New Orleans City Park is proud to announce the opening of the new Parker’s Café in Carousel Gardens Amusement Park. The café offers guests a place to buy a snack,cool off in the air conditioning and use the free wi-fi.

Friends of City Park members receive a 10% discount on purchases! The café offers seating for 136 people inside and seating for 24 outside. There is one ADA table. Menu highlights include: PB&J sandwiches, fresh fruit, fresh made salads,Dole pineapple whip soft serve ice cream, burgers, hot dogs and pretzeldogs, chicken sandwiches and tenders, mac and cheese, bayou fries (savorywedge fries topped with roast beef debris gravy and spicy queso cheese),and adult beverages.

Carousel Gardens summer hours are May 31 - August 3; Tuesdaysthrough Thursdays: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.;Saturdays: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sundays: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m..

Martini Madness

Friends member Mrs. Lynda G. LoCoco sent us this picture of hergrandparents, Ben J. Gill and Rose Laweson Gill at the Peristyle ontheir wedding day December 8, 1916. Built in 1906, the Peristyleoverlooks picturesque Bayou Metairie and is one of the most popularvenues for wedding ceremonies and wedding photos in the park.

Martini Madness features more than 30 specialty martinis, ranging from classics to one-of-a-kind creations and over 20samplings of savory cuisine from restaurants around New Orleans.

With only 750 tickets being sold, don’t miss the opportunity to be an adventurous supporter of Friends of City Park and come get your sipon! Enjoy a night of martinis, music, dancing and mouthwatering foodat this festive fundraiser. Martini Madness 2014 is chaired by Sudie andRichard Joint. Proceeds from the event will go towards the installationand decoration of the new station for the returning Lady BugRollercoaster. Tickets go on sale August 7th.

We have completed theimprovements in our amuse-ment park and now that summer is upon us I hope youand your family will comeand enjoy the enhancements.New bathrooms, additional decorative paving, new ticketbooths and extensive land-scaping all make amusementsa more pleasant and invitingattraction.

Perhaps the biggestimprovement is the new cafécalled Parker’s Café! In thearea of the Musik Express, thecafé offers a large variety offood and refreshments in an air conditioned environment. It should make everyone’s visit much more enjoyable.

In addition to all the eventsgoing on in the Park which areon our calendar I wanted to let everyone know we will bedoing our second annual July 3rd concert on theGoldring/Woldenberg GreatLawn. The inaugural concertlast year was so successful,we are doing it again this yearand hope to make it an annualevent. The Marine Band,patriotic music, fireworks –what more could you want!

Of course summer bringswith it the beginning ofHurricane Season. Be sure toreview your hurricane plan andbe prepared. Let’s all hope for aquiet season!

Explore the New Orleans Botanical Garden with a trained garden guide! The Botanical Garden Tour takes visitors on a meandering walk throughthe grounds of the historic garden. The tour covers the history of the gar-den (including information about this Works Progress Administration-funded project) and various exhibits and plant collections throughout thegarden. This walking tour lasts approximately 1-1.5 hours and departsfrom the entrance of the Botanical Garden. Please wear comfortableshoes and clothing suited for the weather. Tour is limited to 40 people.

Couturie Forest & Arboretum Tour Led by City Park Chief Development Officer & Public Affairs Director John Hopper

Come take a hike! Partake in an in depth tour of Couturie Forest and Arboretum. Learn every aspect of the forest’s development, from how itbecame the highest point in New Orleans to what species of trees arebeing planted and why. Participants will explore a section of the parkthat is normally closed to the public. Please wear comfortable shoes andclothing suited for the weather. The tour will begin at 9 a.m. at theentrance to the forest on Harrison Avenue. Tour is limited to 30 people.

Enjoy a behind the scenes look at one of the most famous attractions in the Amusement Park, the carousel. For more than 100 years, visitorshave enjoyed this unique marvel – a beauty featuring "flying horses" and one of only 100 such carousels in the country. Participants will getan in depth look at the history of the carousel and enjoy a VIP ride! Tour is limited to 30 people. Please note that two tours will be held this day.
