Sonoita Stick Horse Races sponsored by the RTCA and AQRA
AQRA President, James Kelly
On the First Saturday in May ...all eyes turn to Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. But in South-ern Arizona ...all roads lead to Sonoita as they always race on this week end. They simulcast the Kentucky Derby and are the official off rack betting venue for Turf Paradise racing. As the old saying goes” if you build it they will come” the fans pack this
small community. It’s a tradition for fans all over Arizona as they make plans well in advance to spend the week end here. Also a tradition ... the AQRA sponsors the stick horse races for the kids while waiting for the big race to come on the huge screen. Its kinda like a half time show… The Racetrack Chaplaincy of Arizona co- sponsors the prizes for the kids. Each child got a t-shirt and
medal plus extra prizes for the 1-3 place finishers. The jockeys always have to get into the as they love a foot race. The jockeys then threw t-shirts and bonnets in the
stands. A good time was had by all…
Congratulations to Matt Fales, Turf Paradise Quarter Horse Trainer of the meet, Ralph and Carolyn Fales as Turf Paradise Owners of the
meet, Martin Bourdieu Turf Paradise Jockey of the meet and Turf Paradise Quarter horse of the meet goes to Caracortada, owned by Ramon Vejar. Ralph Fales accepts the awards for Trainer and Owner Award. Buckles were presented by Shawn Coady, Racing Secretary and John Everly Assistant Racing Secretary . General Manager Vince Francia and Assistant General Manager Dave Johnson presenting Buckles for lead-ing owners…Dani Clegg and Bucky Huff, were given “The Whinny Award” . This award goes each year to a person or persons who gives unselfishly to the betterment of the Industry. These ladies definitely deserve this recognition for all they do for the horseman here at Turf Paradise. Congratulations girls… Tom Metzen, Executive Director of the AzHBPA accepted the Walter Cluer award this year. This award is in memory of
the founder of Turf Paradise in 1954. Congratulations to all the recipients of these prestigious awards…..
Attention Horseman...You are missing out on valuable breeders awards if you do not certify your horses that are racing. As you can see by the form below the earlier you certify the less the cost. You get owners and breeders awards at all commercial race tracks ( Rillito and Turf Paradise) ...You get 5% back from the tracks plus a 12 to 15 percentage from the Arizona Department of Racing each quarter. If you do not have your horses certified and you win a race, you will loose out on all these awards. Please fill out the form below and send along with the original papers , AQRA will stamp the papers thus certifying your foals
and return your papers to you. This is a one time fee...your foals are certified for life.

PHONE WAGERING COMES TO ARIZONA
On May 5th Governor Jan Brewer signed into law SB1282 which permits betting on horse and dog races by phone. The law goes into effect 90 days af-ter signing. The legislation, which was authored by Senator Steve Pierce, an owner and breeder of racing Quarter Horses, is expected to bring a welcome boost to our purse structure. Turf Paradise is now in the process of selecting a “provider” service. An in-dividual will be able to open an account with that provider and wager, by phone, on any live or simulcast race offered at the Phoenix race track. It is expected to be up and running by the start of the 2014-15 meet which opens October 18.
The AQRA would personally like to thank Senator Pierce for his constant support of live racing in Arizona...
