LUV WAS IN THE AIR ON VALENTINE’S DAY as the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy held its 14th annual Celebration of Reading event in Bonita Springs, FL. This organization is Southwest Airlines’ new national partner, and it was founded 25 years ago by former First Lady Barbara Bush with a goal to improve the lives of families through learning. “The American Dream is about equal opportunity for everyone who works hard. If we don’t give everyone the ability to simply read and write, then we aren’t giving everyone an equal chance to succeed,” says Mrs. Bush.

It’s a fact that low-literacy skills are directly linked to higher unemployment, less earned income, and poor health. Over the past 25 years, the organization has funded more than 1500 literacy programs, and it advocates for parents and children to read and write, the most basic of educational skills.

Today, the Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is led by her children, Jeb Bush and Dora Bush Koch, and continues to inspire those with a passion to learn.

The fundraising event, hosted by former Governor Jeb Bush, raised more than $1 million to support opportunities for families. First Lady Barbara Bush and President George H.W. Bush greeted attendees via Skype™ from their home.

Authors included in the program were Teri Hatcher, actress and author of Burnt Toast: And Other Philosophies of Life; Eric Draper, author of Front Row Seat: A Photographic Portrait of the Presidency of George W. SPECIALIST OF COMMUNITY AFFAIRS & GRASSROOTS

CHERYL was officially hired at Southwest Airlines seven years ago, but she joined the Southwest Family long before that! Cheryl began temping at Southwest in 1996, working part-time while she raised her four children. After her kids were grown, Cheryl made it official by joining the Community Relations Department where she specialized in managing Southwest’s Community Giving Boards— which are made up of Employees who are responsible for managing donation requests in their local communities. Last year, Cheryl made her debut on the Community Affairs & Grassroots

Team, and she hit the ground running by taking on the Southwest-sponsored Congressional Art Competition, and supporting our Community Partnerships in the East Coast and heartland regions. In her free time, Cheryl enjoys traveling and spending time with her family at the lake!

    Building Community in

    San Francisco’s Chinatown

FOUNDED IN 1977, CHINATOWN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTER’S MISSION IS to improve the quality of life for primarily low-income residents by increasing the stock of affordable housing, providing quality property management services, enhancing public space and transportation, and mobilizing residents to advocate for change.

Southwest Airlines has helped raise the visibility of Chinatown CDC, including its 2014 Lunar New Year Luncheon and 36th Anniversary Gala, which each drew more than 650 community members. Southwest tickets help raise funds for various programs and services, while giving San Francisco residents with limited income the opportunity to fly.

Southwest’s support has also leveraged Chinatown CDC’s economic development objectives to enhance Chinatown’s presence as a Cultural Hub. Tickets were used as an incentive to draw more shoppers into Chinatown; more than 1,500 individuals returned their “shopping cards” and were entered into a raffle drawing. The winners were selected at the Chinese New Year Street Festival.

In addition, Southwest has helped youth leaders attend workshops to enhance their expertise and awareness about relevant issues and their communities. Rev. Norman Fong, Executive Director of Chinatown CDC, said, “We are grateful for our relationship with Southwest Airlines. Working together, we can continue to improve the quality of life for all San Francisco residents.”

    STUDENTS Light UP the stage

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS LIT UP THE STAGE in their glowing t-shirts and sneakers as dancers, background singers, and musicians with Sting and Paul Simon at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts’ Annual Performance Series of Legends. The students and audience enjoyed a thrilling concert. With Southwest Airlines as the Official Airline of the school, the concert soared by raising more than $1.2 million for school programs, which is the highest amount ever raised during this event. Past featured artists include Ellington alum and opera star Denyce Graves and musical icons Stevie Wonder; Earth, Wind & Fire; Smokey Robinson; and Patti LaBelle.

The audience was excited to learn from Karen Price-Ward, Southwest Airlines, Community Affairs & Grassroots Regional Leader, of Southwest Airlines’ commitment to add flights in the D.C. region to become a more prominent DCA airline carrier and community partner.

Since 1974, the school has upheld its mission of providing an exemplary arts and academic education to talented youth who may not otherwise have the opportunity. The school is an independently operated public school in partnership with the D.C. public schools, George Washington University, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Ellington Fund. This college preparatory, arts-focused high school boasts a 99 percent graduation rate and 95 percent college acceptance rate. Students specialize in dance, literary media and communications, museum studies, instrumental or vocal music, theatre, technical design and production, or visual arts. WITH ASSISTANCE FROM SOUTHWEST AIRLINES, participants and staff from Connections to Success and the National Transitional Jobs Network (NTJN) traveled to Washington, D.C. this winter to talk with members of Congress about how Connections to Success transforms lives. Participants met with their members of Congress from Missouri and Kansas including Senator Claire McCaskill, Representative Emmanuel Cleaver, Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer, and others. Connections to Success is a leader in empowering low-income individuals in their transformation to economic independence by providing hope, resources, and a plan in Missouri and Kansas.

The trip was coordinated and lead by the National Transitional Jobs Network – a national coalition dedicated to getting Americans back to work, housed at Heartland Alliance. Participants and staff spoke with members of Congress about the need for employment opportunities in their communities to ensure that everyone who wants to work has opportunities and the support to do so. In addition, Connections to Success received a private tour of the White House!

Damion Alexander, a Life Transformation Coach and Trainer at Connections to Success, played a central role in showing members of Congress how important it is for them to champion ideas that transform lives, advance economic opportunity, and strengthen families.

“When I was at the Lincoln Memorial, I was thinking, “Here I am, in D.C., getting to

be a voice for people,” said Damion Alexander

  • IT WAS A ONE-OF-A-KIND EXPERIENCE as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum traveled to Club Nokia in Los Angeles to raise funds for the Museum through an evening of music. All for the Hall, Los Angeles featured intimate acoustic perfor-

ALL FOR THE HALL mances from Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Jason Mraz, Heart, Rita Wilson, Holly Williams, and Cam Ochs, based on Nashville’s "guitar pull" tradition. The "guitar pull" is a Nashville specialty; it originated in the homes of Nashville songwriters who gathered to try out new compositions for their peers. Southwest Airlines was proud to support the fundraiser that gave attendees the unique opportunity to see these acclaimed singer-songwriters interact with one another as they took turns swapping songs, stories and personal recollections. With such a diverse artist and song selection, the event showed the powerful connection between country music and other forms of popular music. It was a magical night of spontaneity and camaraderie, the hallmark of a great guitar pull!

Meanwhile back in Music City, the museum unveiled a 210,000-square-foot expansion with a gala grand opening ceremony. In addition to remarks from Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, Museum Director Kyle Young, and Museum Board Chairman Steve Turner, an all-star band was on hand to provide musical accompaniment for performances by Vince Gill, Lee Ann Womack, Ricky Skaggs, the Valentines, the McCrary Sisters, and Buddy Miller. The expansion includes remarkable new spaces including the CMA Theater, Taylor Swift Education Center, a new home for the letterpress operation Hatch Print Show, and a sixth floor event hall overlooking the Nashville Skyline.

    Sphinx Organization’s Medals of Excellence

Medal of Excellence Awardees L-R: Sphinx Medal of Excellence Recipients Damien Sneed, Pedrito Martinez, and Carla Dirlikov with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Sphinx Founder and President, Aaron P. Dworkin

AS A CLASSICAL VIOLINIST, Aaron Dworkin noticed that when he performed, he was often the only person of color in the orchestra and, often, in the performance space altogether. So, he founded Sphinx with the mission and vision to transform lives through the power of diversity. Prior to Sphinx, less than 1.5% of all orchestra musicians were Black or Latino. Today, that number has more than doubled to 4%. Through five key programs, Sphinx works to help develop the talent of Black and Latino classical musicians in hopes of further narrowing that gap. Through Sphinx’s five key programs, 100,000 aspiring musicians of color in nearly 200 schools nationwide have been exposed to the world of classical music.

Sphinx Prep, located in Detroit, provides yearlong classes in performance, music history, and music theory. Their Overture program provides youth in Detroit and Flint, Michigan with free instruments and lessons to prepare them for Sphinx Prep.

The Sphinx Medals of Excellence honor young Black and Latino Leaders in classical music who have demonstrated artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, a spirit of determination, and leadership potential. Recently, Sphinx Medal of Excellence winners were honored at a ceremony hosted by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Southwest Airlines is proud to support the Sphinx Organization as it continues its work transforming the lives of young Black and Latino musicians. To learn more, visit www.sphinxmusic.org.
