This year our Rescue became a separate or-ganization. In the past many of our donors have asked why we

were not a 501c3. In order to be-come a 501c3 we had to first start a new corporation. This involves starting almost everything from scratch.

In April we officially became Colonial Newfoundland Rescue Inc. We then had to apply to get the 501c3 status from the IRS. We received our letter in June that we are official! If you donated to our Rescue on April 4, 2016 or after you can deduct your donations on your taxes.

We will continue to work hand in hand with the club, but on paper will operate separately. By being a club member you will also be a Rescue member.

Our Board of Directors for the Rescue are:President: Donna McConnVice President: Kathy PaxtonTreasurer: Bob BlaicherSecretary: Margaret MarcusMembers at Dave RothschildLarge: Bennett Alford Next year and thereafter “you”, the club members, will appoint the Rescue Board of Directors.

When you receive your member-ship renewal this year it will have a separate page for Rescue dona-tions. Please be sure to write a separate check to Rescue so it will be tax deductible.

In addition to donating by check,

we have a Pay Pal account just for Rescue. Currently that can be found on the first page of the Club’s website at www.cncnewfs.com. If you do not have a Pay Pal account and want to donate via credit card, there is no charge to sign up for Pay Pal.

Contact information for the Rescue:Our new website for the Res-cue is www.colonialnewfrescue.org. There is a link also from our Club’s website to the Rescue website.

E-mail is [email protected] or [email protected]. These two e-mails will be linked together.

The phone number remains the same as 703-967-1000.

Mailing address is PO Box 305, Amissville, VA 20106.

For “you”, the club member, Res-cue operations will not change. We will continue to operate with the same policies and procedures you are familiar with.

Please remember that Rescue operates solely on donations from you, your family, and friends and by spreading the word. When you think about donating to a charity please consider us. We cannot help these wonderful dogs get new homes without your financial help and assistance volunteering.

The OAR (Otis Aid to Rescue) Fund will now also be under the new Rescue organization. This fund assists Newfoundlands

with severe medical issues who would otherwise need to be turned into Rescue. In order for some-one to benefit from the fund they must complete an application and meet certain criteria. This fund was started by Lezlie and Bennett Alford in memory of their New-foundland named Otis. Donations to the OAR Fund can also be made via check or Pay Pal. These do-nations are now tax deductible. Please note that the donation is for the OAR Fund.

Thank you to everyone that has helped in the past, present and will hopefully help in the future to assist Newfoundland dogs in need.

Yours truly, Donna McConn & Chance (ruff ruff) & the Rescue Team.

Won’t someone adopt me? I am 8 years old but still have

many years to love a new family. Contact Rescue for more info.

This year has been an-other difficult year for Rescue.

We started off with a 8-year old male that was still in Rescue from 2015. He was ad-opted and was returned because the new owner said he was not happy at their home and whined and barked a lot. Because they thought he might be in pain from a medical condition they had a full work up on him at their veteri-narian. Nothing medically wrong was found. While being fostered, Rescue consulted with Dr. Leslie Sinn, a veterinary behaviorist. She donated her time to discuss-ing this dog’s situation. Since we could not find anything medically wrong with him we figured it must be psychological. To make a long story short we believe he has some type of anxiety disorder. He is a very sweet, but reserved fellow, and is still looking for his forever

home. This poor guy has been in foster now for almost a year. Dogs are funded by Rescue until they are adopted. (pictured on page 2)

Sadly, a dog that had been adopted last year was returned to us this year. One of her owners was in a nearly fatal accident and they were no longer able to care for her. She is only 2 years old and still has a lot of puppy tendencies (lack of training) that we are working on. In addition to her training issues, she has a juvenile cataract that needs to be removed. While this is something that is completely “fixable” it is costly. She appears to be vision impaired in that eye which could also lead to some of her misbehaving! Once she has this surgery she will be needing a forever home with someone with NO cats and no young children (because of her rough puppy play).

We have a 6-year-old male that came in with Lyme disease and Heartworm disease. We have treated the Lyme and are working on treating the Heartworm. In ad-dition this poor fellow has had no socialization with other dogs. He was most likely kept outdoors and

After I get my eye fixed I will need a new home. I am 2 years old and love to play fetch. For

more info contact Rescue.

HELP WITH DONATIONS & FOSTER HOMES!

Page 4: SUMMER 2016 ISSUE 116 - cncnewfs.comcncnewfs.com/Newsletters/BearFare116Summer2016.pdf · breeder was but can tell that they were not well-bred dogs. Just because they do not look

4

never taken anywhere. He is super sweet with people and is currently being fostered in a home with a member that has an elderly moth-er who he loves. We can begin to work with his socialization after the Heartworm treatment is done. Before and during the treatment there can be no exercise or stimu-lation. It is a risky procedure but the alternate is not good either. By the end of this summer he will be looking for his forever home possi-bly in a home with no other dogs.

It also seems that this year we have gotten in many dogs that need training and socialization. People always think of Newfoundland’s as “easy going, lay at your feet, follow you everywhere, gets along with all dogs, people etc.” type of dogs. Keep in mind that we are getting ones from puppy mills and back-yard breeders. The breeders that belong to a club want their dogs back if an owner has to give them up. Many of the Newfs coming into Rescue have smaller heads; weigh less than normal or just don’t look like the textbook Newf. Typically we do not know who the breeder was but can tell that they were not well-bred dogs.

Just because they do not look like a show dog does not mean they will not be a loving, sweet dog. Many will need lots of training to be-come that laid back Newf person-ality that we all know and love. In order to help more Newfs that need new homes we need your help. Two things that we are lack-ing in currently:

1. Donations – Last year we were able to pay for two surgeries be-cause of donations from you and others. Currently, we are in need of donations to help pay for the cataract surgery and the heart-worm treatment. Additionally, we have had a lot of other veterinary costs this year.

2. Foster Homes – Many people will sign up to be a foster home but then later can no longer fos-ter. Just like matching up a dog with a new owner, we try to match up the foster dog with the foster home. If we know that we have a dog that might now be good with other dogs we need a home with no other dogs.

If we don’t call you, it is because of a particular situation or needs a dog may have. The more foster

homes we have, the more dogs we can take in and not have to ken-nel. When possible, we prefer to place a Rescue in a foster home. It is less stressful on the dog and it helps the dog transition easier to a forever home.

Please mail Rescue donations to:Colonial Newfoundland Rescue, Inc.PO BOX 305Amissville, VA 20106

Or make a donation via Pay Pal on our website (www.colonial-newfrescue.org) or CNC’s website (www.cncnewfs.com).

Wags and Hugs to everyone for any help you can provide.

CASEYMay 25, 2003 - June 20, 2016Entered CNC Rescue in March 2004.

The club affectionately called her “Boomer-rang” because we were her 4th home by the time she was 9 months old. But we knew this active puppy was meant for our family and would never leave. It was because of her that we joined CNC. She is missed very much and we still hear her sounds in the house.

Their daughter became ill and they said they would not be able to provide this pup with what he needed. The owner did not want him to go back to the breed-er therefore would not share that info. He was adopted out the same day to a family that had already been approved. All he needed was a microchip and last DHPP vac-cination. Since he was intact they signed an agreement to have him neutered and Donna will follow up.o Recommendation by BOD to neuter at 18 months to allow growth plate to close (guaranteed closed at 24 months), but we go by whomever the adopted parents vet recommends.➢ Koozie is a 6-year old neutered male who was turned into a shel-ter by his owner because he and another of the owner’s dog got into a fight. The dog was apparently an outdoor dog. He tested positive for Heartworm and Lyme, worms and was full of mats so he had to be clipped. The foster that has him does not have any dogs and she has been instructed to hold off on any dog-to-dog introductions. He is great with people. We have a woman with no dogs that is inter-ested in him as long as he is OK

Three new Rescues were brought in this month.• Diesel was brought back into

rescue. The owner said he was jumping and growling on the fence at a neighborhood kid. He is be-ing fostered again at Donna’s. We need to decide if we want to send him to professional training. He is horrible riding in the car, will not come when called and needs work getting along with all dogs. Dave can take him on some weekends to work with him once he is off of the anti-anxiety meds. Two trainers were contacted. Greg Strong has a board and train for 2 weeks for $895. A local trainer Charlotte Wagner charges $135 for a 1.5-hour consult to determine what type of training he needs. We have an interested family for him but they have a cat. Dave and Donna visited the family with Diesel and think it could work but first Dave recommends more training for Diesel.• Emmy (aka Sasha) was brought back into Rescue. Her human fa-ther was in a very bad motorcycle accident and the human mom will be staying with him in a rehabilita-tion hospital until he can go home which will be months or up to a year. She felt it would be best for Emmy to find a new home since she will not be able to bring her.• EXECUTIVE SESSION: • While in Executive Session the BOD discussed a situation with a Rescue Newf.

Updates on fosters/adoptions• Cooper is still in Foster. He is doing well. We still have interest from a club member but they have not committed. Donna will need to pick him up and take him by and do a home inspection at the same time. • A couple that has 11.5 year-old Newf adopted Larry. They just lost their 13.5 year-old. He is doing

well with them.• Jo Jo was returned to the breeder.• Dr. Kable has seen Koozie for the Heartworm treatment. He is doing well at his foster. She took him to one training lesson for basic obe-dience. Dr. Kable said he has issues with his hips. He will return to Airpark in June for his first heart-worm treatment.

Other:• Would like to file for the 501c3 on line. The By-Laws are not needed for the short form, which is what we can complete. The cost is $400. • Reston Pet Fiesta was busy. We had several people interested in adoption and club membership.• Discuss refund of breeder’s dona-tion of $500 for us adopting JoJo. She is asking for it back. We spent $238 on her for food and veteri-narian. Recommend giving her the difference.

Rescue Activities– Donna Mc Conn and Dave Rothschild• Reston Pet Fiesta, May 7, 10 am to 4 pm, Reston Towne Center• Woof Stock-Flyer attached – June 11th• DogFest in Shepherdstown. May 14 & 15 (Report JM)• The festival rained out on Sat-urday but weather was good on Sunday when CNC Newfs were scheduled to give wagon rides. Dave Rothschild with Hudson and Titan, Glenn Lesher with Glory, and Judith Marshall with Enzo were there from 10 AM till about 3 PM, giving rides to delighted kids. • Cookie Basham was there with a tableful of shirts and hats for sale. Ambassadors were Margaret and Arielle Marcus with Bosco and Bella Rose and Jaime and Mike Saunders with their Newf

and Newf-Saint mix. As usual, the Newfs were very popular with the crowd and it was a great experi-ence demonstrating Newf draft skills. • Although the festival was not as large as I thought it would be (weather may have kept some vendors away), it was an enjoyable social for the club members who attended, several membership applications were given out to local residents, and we raised $80 @ $2 per ride for Rescue. • Barrel Oak Winery June 4th, 3:30 PM - not a CNC Event

501c3 – Donna McConn• Craig will get together with Jim Wasson on Rescue insurance to re-evaluate.o Does our insurance cover Rescue since it is now a separate corpora-tion.o Are there other alternatives.• Membership form amended. This needs approval from CNC BOD• We will have the By-Laws back from the attorney with his recom-mendations in time for our next board meeting. In researching for filing for the 501c3 status we might not need them to go forward. o According to the IRS I can file the short form on line and it is retroactive to the date we were incorporated which was April 4. This means anyone that donates now can claim on their taxes as long as we file soon! o The cost to file is $400. I would like to do this right after our next board meeting. o Please add to agenda to have our board approve filing and the cost.• See attached documents below. The first are comments from the attorney that were in an e-mail. The second are some changes already made. According to the at-torney we have reached our $1,000 in costs. He said getting them where they need to be is a lot more involved because of making sure that we meet any requirements for 501c3. Even though we are not

required to submit these to com-plete our application on line it does not mean that the IRS won’t ask for them in reviewing the application. I can write in the items that he has suggested on the first e-mail, have Craig Katz review for any edits to the wording and then have the paid attorney finalize. He said he has about an hour of work left. Suggestions? • Tabling for the June meeting for all to review. Donna to ask attor-ney a couple questions

CH Birchbark Black Lily of Tarkiln (Lily) earned her Cham-pionship title in Hampton, VA Memorial Day weekend. Thanks go out to Kasey Von Engel for her excellent handling. Additionally, I want to share my gratitude to all of the wonderful Newfie people who have taken the time to mentor me in various ways as I begin my jour-ney with showing and becoming more active in the Newf world.Sincerely, Heather Glunt

Buying a bottle of wine in August? Former CNC Rescued Newf, “Ol-iver” Stanford won the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue - Judges Choice wine bottle contest. He will be featured on a bottle of wine that will be available to purchase after 8/1/16. Here’s what the judges said about “Oliver”:

Oliver has been selected by our panel as our 2016 Wine Bottle Contest Judges Choice Winner! It was a wonderful photo of him that exemplifies what we are all about; “Big Fluffy Dogs”. In addition, his story is very moving. It starts off in a frightening place...as do so many rescues, and then ends somewhere beautiful, as a mem-ber of a family, and a credit to his community. In this way, he does an even better job of representing all of our dogs and the Big Fluffy Dog family.

Congratulations to “Max” Stan-ford! He won 2nd place in the Love a Stray Foundation event -- Uncorked for Canines.
