Since 2009 the Foundation has annually received astounding financial support from an anonymous donor in support of Maui High’s AVID program. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $100,000 in donor-directed funding to the AVID Program to cover the program’s annual Oahu College Tour experience for AVID Sophomores and its End-of-Year Senior Banquet expenses.
“AVID is a college prepatory class that challenges its students to really focus on the skills necessary
to succeed in college. It has influenced my perspectives on school, college and life in a
positive way. I understand that pushing yourself to do better than just ‘good’ in school is important
in order to broaden your personal college opportunities. AVID is most definitely a challenge
but if you are willing to put in the work, then the opportunities that come as a result of your drive
and determination can be endless.” — Lindzi Takasaki AVID Class of 2017
This past year the Maui High cross country team received funding from the Foundation made possible by financial gifts from Hike Maui and an anonymous donor.
“These generous gifts help the team participate in races taking place on other islands. Currently, both the boys and girls teams are among the top teams in the state. This being the case, it is important for
us to travel to other islands to gain experience to be prepared for the tougher competition
encountered at the State Championship at the end of the year. Through the generous donations we
have received, along with other fundraising efforts, we have been able to make these trips possible.
For me personally, I am thrilled to have this extra boost of financial support because it will
allow some of the kids to have experiences they otherwise might not have been able to afford.“
— Head Coach Jared Welch

The Maui High School Foundation promotes the pursuit of higher education by awarding scholarship grants to deserving graduates of Maui High School.
MAUI HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Maui High School serves an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population. In order to meet the needs of all students, a number of successful initiatives have contributed to the high achievement and college and career readiness of all students. Maui High’s school-wide ACT awareness campaign had a positive impact on students meeting the ACT college readiness benchmarks, a 17% increase in 2015 from the previous year. All teachers and staff were in-serviced to be highly knowledgeable about the ACT assessments. Teachers and staff, then, informed students of the importance of the ACT and many teachers used the content they learned in the ACT Awareness Training to guide their instruction and assessments at the classroom level. This first-time awareness campaign was well-received by both teachers and students. Maui High plans to make it an annual practice. Maui High maintains a diverse curriculum focused on preparing students for success in college or chosen careers. The school’s course offerings include a wide array of classes serving varied career, technical and artistic interests as well
as support programs to ensure student success. The Career and Technical Education Pathways do a stellar job of linking students with community members so they can take on leadership roles as well as learn about the many post-secondary options available to them.Maui High has an open enrollment Advanced Placement course policy so all interested students have the chance to be successful in highly rigorous courses. In addition, a variety of dual enrollment courses are offered so students can receive college credit while still in high school. As an AVID school, students benefit from common literacy strategies in most of their courses. Maui High teachers implement common note-taking and close-reading strategies that have helped students perform well on the reading and writing sections of the school-wide assessments.Maui High is a very diverse school and in order to meet the needs of the different populations, a variety of initiatives have been implemented. These initiatives, combined, have fostered successful college and career ready students.
• In 2016 Maui High was honored to be the first high school in Hawaii to be named a
College & Career Transition State
Exemplar in ACT’s College and Career
Readiness Campaign.
• Each spring, in support of a college-going culture, students in the AVID program decorate the halls of MHS with the names and colleges of all students who receive and report college acceptance letters. Each year, an average of 60% of Maui High graduates attend college after graduation.
• In 2015 Maui High seniors reported over 10 million awarded in merit-based scholarships and in 2016 our seniors surpassed the 11 million threshold.
• Each spring, Maui High hosts a college fair open to all students on Maui and their families. This fair features over 60 colleges and universities and offers a variety of college planning related workshops.
• A Maui High diploma also requires successful completion of both the Personal Transition Plan and Senior Project programs, two elements that help further prepare our students for life after high school.
THE VISION OF MAUI HIGH SCHOOLCommitted to A College and Career Ready Culture on Campus
DID YOU
KNOW? COLLEGE & CAREER READY: SUMMER MONTEHERMOSO
“At Maui High School, I am given countless opportunities to prepare myself for the real world of college and work. I challenge myself with the challenging classes available here, with five Advanced Placement classes and two Running Start courses from the University of Hawaii Maui College done by the time I graduate. By my junior year, I learned how to do an interview, create a resume, and apply for jobs and colleges. Aside from academic work and the basics, being in the Arts & Communications pathway has opened even more doors for me to expand my knowledge and gain experience in work, developing my skills with real clients and jobs. Although I do aspire to become a nurse practitioner in the future, being in this pathway has made me think about using my knowledge and skill in digital arts to do freelance graphic design on the side. So far, I have taken a leadership position in the Robotics team as the captain for the documenting department, with countless hours of teaching and training other students in HTML & CSS, Photoshop, and other programs. Right now, I am participating in the MEDB STEMworks Internship, working under Da Kitchen as a graphic designer. All of these opportunities would not be possible if I were not an active student at Maui High School.”
