English’s Corner by John English
Summer is here and KI has some great summer opportunities for your children!
I am really excited about our summer camp and summer training program we have put together this year. For the past 12 summers we have always done our summer blast program in July and August. This year we are improving our summer blast program. Instead of having daily themes, we will have weekly themes based around fun, cool martial arts related material! Every Friday will be Friday fun day and students will be allowed to bring in a friend or family member to train in class with them. Also be sure your child wears shorts and a school or plain tee shirt to every class! We do a lot of no gi work and having the appropriate attire is vital.
I know summer attendance can be tough for some. Please let an instructor know if you are going away or will have difficultly making the class schedule. We will be offering extra make up classes and private/semi private training for kids who cannot make class in July and August. Remember, its always to keep an activity going when consistent with attendance. Stopping only makes starting back up that much more difficult! Martial arts is a marathon not a sprint!
Parents, please remember martial arts success happens with consistent attendance and communication with us!
Thank you all again for you support and loyalty to KI!
Looking forward to seeing you in class! Mr. English

Summer TipsThings to Remember For Summer! • Class times will remain the same whether at the Dojo or during Stratham Hill Park Days! So
make sure you read and post your calendar so you arrive at the right location for class! • If weather is bad on any day that classes meet at Stratham Hill Park, then normal classes
will be held at the Exeter Dojo. When in doubt call the school or check the website and your email for verification. We will make the decision by noon each day.
• Please be sure to put sunscreen on your kids on days that are going to be outside! Also
water bottles with your kids will insure that no one dehydrates. • Every Friday is Buddy Day. All we need is a name, address and phone number of the child’s
buddy. There is no limit on the amount of buddies a student may bring. We just ask that the parents of the buddy be informed of where they are going and the appropriate pick up time be scheduled.
• Please be sure kids ALWAYS bring something to wear on their feet! Running shoes
or the sandals that strap around the ankle are best. Flip-flops are not recommended. Footwear is a MUST whether we are here at the Dojo or at Stratham Hill Park. Students without shoes will not be allowed outside.
When in doubt, CALL! 778-8475 office 770-2555 John’s Cell 770-4037 Craig’s CellWebsite: www.kimacnh.com Messages will be checked frequently during July and August!

As I write this article we are approaching Memorial Day. I’d like to take this opportunity to honor a family member of mine who fought in World War 2. Recently a student at George Washington University did a research article about him. What follows is an excerpt of the paper.
“A freshly minted second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Vincent “Vinnie” Francis Byrne spent his last few hours in the United States mere miles from where he was born and raised in
Melrose, Massachusetts. Waiting with the rest of his company at a port in Boston, he would instead head east across the Atlantic, in preparation of the Allied landings along the French coast in Normandy. Like so many others, Vinnie would not return from Europe. He would be the only Byrne brother not to survive World War Two, leaving behind a large extended family. Unlike many others, Vinnie was afforded an opportunity not to go overseas yet chose to anyway, making what Abraham Lincoln called “the last full measure of devotion” the ultimate sacrifice on the Normandy coast... On June 5, as those storming the beaches at Utah and Omaha made their final preparations, most of the 112th was on a training drill. With the exception of one regimental combat team, the majority of the men would have to wait over a month until they would make it to the coast of France. There was disappointment among the men that they would not be involved in the landing and as they conducted their training, they could the thundering of planes overhead.
On June 29, the battalion received orders to head to St. Lo. The men were alarmed by the extent of the damage that had befallen the town. Two days later, just outside St. Lo, 1st battalion had its true entrance into combat at the objective.. They encountered two SS divisons, the panzer division “Das Reich” The mission was declared a success for the Allies in a unit report but the regiment sustained nearly 300 casualties, including 54 killed in action. 2nd Lt. Vincent Byrne was among them, killed during the difficult fighting to take Hill 210, later renamed “Purple Heart Hill” by the battalion.”
This article was sent to my family along with pictures of my great-uncle during his service. We had grown up listening to stories of the war, my grandfather and his four brothers all served during that time. Only Vinnie didn’t make it home. My grandfather was on a battleship in the Pacific the day the Japanese surrendered.
Please take the time to remember those who sacrificed so we could live, who protected people they didn’t know because of the foundation that this country was built on.
