ILR814 Revolutionary France: 1789 4 sessions, 6 hours

The French Revolution has captivated historians for centuries. Enlightenment ideals inspired the French people to rise up against their absolute monarchy in order to achieve a long desired constitution. Their opportunity came in 1789, when Louis XVI called the Estates General, becoming the catalyst of one of the bloodiest regime changes in history. Over the course of twelve years, France would transition from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy, a republic, and an empire. How did this all come to pass in such a short period of time and what is the true legacy of the French Revolution? In this course we will trace the events leading up to the revolution and how such a noble cause turned into such a blood-spilling calamity. Instructor: Lucas Dayhoff holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History and a minor in political science from Elizabethtown College. With a long time passion for history and historical studies, Lucas has both tutored and taught history to his collegiate peers for the past two years while pursuing a Master’s Degree in Secondary Social Studies from Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. At Elizabethtown, Lucas was the President of the Omicron Pi Chapter of the nationally recognized history honors society Phi Alpha Theta. He specialized in modern European history with specific emphasis on historiography and French imperialism. 4-Digit Number: 8468 Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., June 1– June 22 Location: Conference Center (E Building) /E106 Tuition: $30 Fee: $49 Total: $79 MD residents age 60+ pay fee only: $49

ILR819 Broken Promises and Compromises: From the Articles of the Confederation to the Constitution 6 sessions, 12 hours

The Constitution, the framework with which we govern ourselves, has lasted for over 200 years. How did the Founding Fathers do it? In this course we examine the economic and cultural conditions of the country following the American Revolution and the Articles of Confederation and these document’s perceived weaknesses in addressing the country’s problems. We will then investigate the issues facing those attending the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787 and how both Philadelphia itself, as well as the founding fathers attention to ‘’team building process issues,’’ contributed to the convention’s success. We will discuss the key compromises that derived from the constitutional debates: small vs. large states, north vs. south, slavery, economics, representation issues, and the ‘’worthy against the licentious.” We will then analyze why and how the Constitution was ratified in state conventions.
