A message from your Commodore MurrayHello everyone,

If you have been to the club recently you will see the renovations are well underway and halfway towards completion. Despite best efforts the job is now 3 weeks behind schedule partly due to our decision to replace some windows that were found to be beyond repair, however I’m still hope-ful the scaffolding will be down prior to Christmas. This is big project for the club the last being over 12 years ago when the upstairs toilets, lift and front decks were built.

A big thank you to Morton Timber, Dysart ITM, and Specialist Linings Ltd for their generous sup-port that collectively will have saved us over $ 5,000. Thank you also to Maraetai Sailing Club who have generously donated $30,000. Our loan from ASB Bank has been drawn down with very favourable commercial rates thanks to the sup-port of Auckland Council. A working bee will be announced very soon for painting which will help keep the overall cost down. If you can spare a hand please come along and help, it is much easier to save $5000 than it is to fundraise it! Later in the newsletter you will see the funding barometer which will be updated regularly and will keep you up to date on progress.

Our aim is to have the best facilities in the lo-cal area that will be a pleasure to use and make our members proud. Some new furniture, more beverage choices, entertainment and decor is on the agenda so watch this space, and please let me know any ideas you may have as well to brighten things up or add interest. You don’t have to own a boat to enjoy the facilities at the club and Commu-nity Membership is open so if you have friends or know people new to the neighbourhood who may like to join, please bring them along and show off your club, it is the best around.

Believe it or not summer is officially here and we can look forward to picnics and swimming in the sheltered bays, as well as the fishing which is ‘HOT’ according to the radio shows.... like you I cant wait to get amongst it and hopefully get to Great Barrier Island which has been on my to do list for some time now. Being a member of the boat club is more than just using the ramp, you are part of the family and there are a lot of great friendships to be had and fun times to share all with a com-mon interest. Next time you come down to the club say hello to someone new you will be sur-prised how much you have in common. I challenge you to record the fun times ahead in the club and on the water and take photos, photos, and more photos to share in the club newsletter, next years calendar, website, and of course the clubs Facebook page. As an added incentive there will be a reward offered each month until the end of March 2017. The photos should fit the title ‘It’s fun being part of the MBBC family’. The photos received each month will go in a draw to win a $50 bar tab that you can enjoy on a sunny even-ing at the club. All entries received by 31st March will also go in the grand prize draw of dinner for two at the ‘Faulty Fowers dinner and show’ be-ing staged in the club 29th April 2017. Email your photos to [email protected] .

You will notice in the car park a chiller and new weigh station facility. Thanks to Shane Mitchell and Rowan Crawford for their handy work, which in-cidently was built in their spare time. In the weigh station is a copy of the ‘Brag Board’ so don’t’ for-get to weigh or photo that big fish on the official length mat if you intend to release it, it could win you a trophy.

In closing I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, enjoy family time and have a great summer break in this festive sea-son. Enjoy the water and stay safe.

Best RegardsMurray Kimpton

Maraetai Sailing Club

Well, we are right into the 2016/ 2017 season already and it is great to see the club busy again having awakened from the winter hibernation. And soon it will truly be renewed when the exterior upgrade is complete and we get to use our new decks. Speaking of which....... there will be several working bees coming up so have the paint brush-es ready!Welcome to all our new members. It is great to see new faces at the club and new youngsters starting out. Also some not-so-youngsters as we have managed to introduce an adult learn to sail course utilising 2 newly acquired lasers. Several sailors have been busy throughout the winter and have competed in several events. MSC hosted our leg of the Starling Travellers Series at the start of the season as well as a leg of the Auckland Winter Sprint Series in August. Sep-tember was AIMS Games in Tauranga with 3 club members attending. This was the second year sailing has been included and again it proved to be one on the toughest events on the calendar what with the massive harbour current and winds well over 20knots. Our sailors held their own with Callum & Sofia in 15th & 16th - equal on points and decided by count back, and Lachlan in a re-spectable 32nd from a fleet of 80. As an indication of conditions, in the 4th race - the only racing on day 2, only 25 boats managed to start and 7 finished! MSC was very well represented at the Ohope Regatta again with a strong team of 6 Jolly boats and 3 Optis making the trip over Queens Birthday Weekend.November has been particularly busy with regat-tas every weekend. First up was the North Island Opti champs in New Plymouth. MSC teamed up with the other East AKL Clubs and jointly fielded 9 sailors of which 4 made Gold Fleet. This was a new experience for all; sailing in the Tasman Sea with the average swell running at 2m and plenty

of 3-4m ones coming through! Next up was the AKL P-Class champs - 2 days split between MBSC and KYC over 2 weekends - 12 & 26 November. It is great to have P's sailing for MSC again as we have not seen them since Dragonfly a few years back. In between was the Intermediate Schools regatta where Sofia had a great day to place 6th overall. The 19th saw the Tanner Cup trials being held at KYC, and while we were down the ranks due to gear failure in extremely tough conditions, it is again fantastic to have representation in these events. If last season was notable for a lack of wind, with several events being cancelled, then this season is shaping up as the exact opposite. The average wind for most events appears to be in the 20knot region. Wonderful for the windsurfers who have really grown in numbers this year. Over the weekend of 12-13 November MSC hosted the AKL Jolly Boat champs in conditions at the upper limits for the class. There was a great turn out with 22 boats - and some very sore and tired bodies by day 2. We clocked 29knots on the committee boat while the average was in the upper teens to early 20's. Again, we pulled off a very successful event in our understated style and provided our guests with our signature hospital-ity. MSC is fast getting a reputation for excellent burgers! Most importantly, the Mermaid was returned to her ancestral home. Our congratulations go to Stu Warman who at-tended the Kona Board World Champs in Florida. Stu placed a very respectable 19th overall and 2nd in his weight division. Showing seniority is no constraint Stu was competing against, and beat-ing, sailors less than half his age. Experience really does count.I hope everybody is enjoying the season so far and there is plenty more sailing to be had before the Christmas break. Safe travellers over the fes-tive season and enjoy whatever you all get up to.

Fair winds,Sean

Fishing Section

Fish & Dive ReportSome would say that the winter fishing season just gone was one of the worst on record (weather wise at least) - especially when the weekends come about and a planned day out in the Gulf simply got blown away. I have to commiserate in kind I'm afraid - just not what I had planned.

But Hey! Summer is here, Christmas is here, warmer weather, warmer water, and already [this season] there has been some great fishing. You only have to look at the new TopCatch Brag Board at the club weigh station to see that there are some great fish being caught.

With the Brag Board in mind, you would have noticed that it now has some brand new categories for Small-Fry and Junior Anglers! Already the kids are getting some great catches up there - so why not get your wee record breakers out on the water and help them to get on the board this summer. To help you all keep track, there is a duplicate TopCatch Brag Board at G.A.S. Maraetai. When you swing in to fuel up or to get some great tackle deals you will be able to see the fish to beat at a glance! At the end of the season (May 2017) we will have our new Club Champions, plus some worthy category winners, plus bragging rights and trophies to suit.

The winds might have been 15-20 knot sou'westers, but record numbers of lure-fishing anglers showed up for the Boat Clubs 'No Bait No Berley' contest held on Saturday 29th October. And lucky for some they did, as the fishing was sensational, especially in the more northern section of the nominated Hauraki Gulf area, with work-ups galore producing lots of snapper and monster kahawai, along with the odd decent kingfish.

NZ Fishing News' Mark Kitteridge represented the magazine, joining Maraetai based skipper Konrad Attenberger and Paul Senior in the action, and they enjoyed some great catches. Small snapper specialist Konrad led the charge, producing three fine snapper on soft-baits, while Paul got one beauty only slightly smaller than Konrad's biggest on a jig. Of particular note is the fact this contest is a 'measurement-based' contest, so large fish can be photographed on the official measure then released. The Single Longest Snapper caught and released, and receiving the LegaSea 'Heroes' package, however, belonged to club and contest stalwart [Darron Crawford] with a whopping 85cm beast!"With at least a dozen snapper over the magic 60cm mark caught, record numbers attending - including a good flotilla of jet-ski's and kayaks, plus Junior and Small-Fry anglers; it's hard to argue that this contest has found it's mark, and is has the winning formula we have always believed it could be.Taking a unique approach, the normally competitive brands of OceanAngler and Berkley Gulp! have put aside their marketing differences to back the event. This year has also seen the fresh and encompassing support of Marina Supplies Pine Harbour. Matt Hodges [of Marina Supplies] is 100% behind the contest and eagerly joins the Maraetai Boat Club in seeing the fantastic future of the event.

Results as follows:Longest Combined Total of three snapper - 1st place Konrad Attenberger 208.5cm (boat), 2nd place Daniel McKenzie 197.5cm (jet-ski), 3rd place Paul Senior 175.5cm (boat). Junior 1st Place Jack Swinehart 125cm (boat), Small-Fry 1st Place Finley Carruthers 37cm (boat). LegaSea Longest Snapper Caught & Released - Darron Crawford 85cm (boat). Individual [closest to] Average winner was Shaun Cowan at 44.5cm (boat). Top Skipper (best average for a vessel), Daniel McKenzie 65.83cm (jet-ski), 2nd Quinton Beatty 56.375cm (boat), 3rd

Konrad Attenberger (Mark Kitteridge bringing down the average) 55.88cm (boat). Cash in the Hat Longest Single Snapper $340.00 Konrad Attenberger 82cm

The next very exciting event is for the kids on Waitangi weekend. The annual "Kids-Off-Couches" fishing contest set to run on 4 Feb 2017. We have decided on some simple changes to over-come some past weather issues. THIS CONTEST WILL NOT BE POSTPONED! In the event of less than ideal weather we will simply tell you to put a raincoat on your kid (it is February) and we will convert the event to a land based one. Rumor has it the weather will be great so let's look at the categories. This year we have altered things to reflect our new Brag Boards categories. We have Small-Fry Anglers (ages up to 11 years on

4th Feb), plus Junior Anglers (ages 12-15 Years - as at 4 Feb 17). G.A.S Maraetai, TopCatch Maraetai, plus Ace Tyres Ltd are keen to provide some great prizes for the kids at an event that always sells out! Tickets are just $10 and will be on sale

from around mid December.

In closing - please take the time to check all of your safety gear before you head out on the water this summer. Check your flares, PFD's (life jackets), first aid kits, spare tyres, VHF, fuel, batteries, engine, trailer, towing attachments, join the coastguard - you get the message. Just be safe.

Have a great summer and a very Merry Christmas - from all the team on the Fish & Dive Committee. Ian TwistChairman
