It was a packed house (or classroom) as six seniors presented their end-of-the-

year projects as part of the Engineering Design & Development (EDD) capstone course. Students’ families, Waverly High School Engineering Partnership Team members, host industry engineers and district administration were all in atten-dance at the event, along with Engineer-ing Teacher Toni Risboskin. Jordun Cranmer, Jarrod Hager and Anthony Simonetti worked with host engineers Jason Wheeler and Joshua Blauvelt of Avery Dennison Corporation in Sayre on an ink-save project upgrade for a popular clothing label printer. The students used 3D-printed parts to mod-ify a printer’s ink application system and

produced a working prototype of their new ink-save scissor lift design. Joshua Gallaher and Christian Zwierlein presented their team results as members of the Vulcraft Camber Mea-surement Tool Project. Cody West also presented his project design for a Waste Area Tote Storage Rack. David Goodridge and Zachary Yeakel from Vulcraft’s Che-mung location were the host engineers who worked with the students through-out the school year. “Special thanks to the host companies, Avery Dennison Corporation and Vulcraft for providing team projects and to the mentors who coached the engineering students throughout the school year,” said Mrs. Risboskin.

Members of the after school Garden Club teamed with Project GROW

to start plants from seeds in the Waverly High School greenhouse. They nur-tured them throughout late winter and early spring so that hundreds of plants could be transferred to local community gardens in Waverly and Sayre when the growing season arrived. Project GROW does powerful work as a local non-profit whose mission is to culti-vate opportunity, education and inspira-tion in our community to value, access and grow healthy food. Nearly 20 Middle School students met after the regular school day twice a week from March through mid-June. Repre-sentatives Janelle Daddona and Katie Replogle from Project GROW led the stu-dents in education and discussions on all

aspects of proper soil preparation, weed-ing and turning of outside gardens, seed planting, plant transplanting to larger pots and to the community gardens. Additional plants were sold at the Proj-ect GROW Garden Sale, an annual fund raiser held outside the Sayre Theater in mid-May. Students also hosted a sale in the school greenhouse. According to Adviser Toni Risboskin, the students participated in all aspects of their sale from putting up posters to advertise and helping customer select plants to working the cash box and car-rying the purchase to customer’s ve-hicles. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised were used for the Garden Club’s end-of-the-season celebration. A big thank you to Big Footes of Waver-ly for donating the screen printing costs of T-shirts purchased for club members.

Congratulations to the Waverly High School Chem Bowl Team, which com-

peted at Corning Community College as a final four team in May. Rounding out the rest of the field were teams from Canisteo-Greenwood, Corning-Painted Post and Elmira school districts. According to Chemistry Teacher Ann Phinney-Foreman, these teams were the winners from a preliminary competition held earlier in May. “Canisteo-Greenwood defeated Corning-Painted Post in the first round, and Elmira defeated Waverly in the second match,” said Mrs. Phinney-Foreman. “Elmira got off to a good start and build up a big lead. But Waverly’s team overcame their nerves to mount a strong come back in the second half of the match, and came within one question of catching Elmira before running out of time.” Elmira went on to win the competition.

This year’s team from Waverly consisted of Morgan Perry, Lillian Keefer, Cohen Sprague, and Marnie Sweeney. Waverly’s second team, Michael Zimmer, Abigail Durgin and Kiara Babcock participated in the first round of competition. “This is the 26th year that Waverly has participated in Chem Bowl,” said Mrs. Phinney-Foreman. “Students look forward to it each year, and it is a great way for them to prepare for their upcoming June Regents chemistry exam.” Chem Bowl is sponsored by Corning Community College and the Corning Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Corning Incorporated and Global Tungsten & Powders Corporation donate gifts to the top four schools. After the competition, students were treated to a dinner and a guest speaker from the ACS.

Members of the International Culture Club and the Arts & Crafts Club enjoyed

trips to the Corning Museum of Glass and New York City this spring. At CMoG, the students created glass orna-ments and sun catchers. Following that trip, they visited with residents at Elderwood to show off their creations and discuss what

they saw and did at the museum. While in NYC, the students explored Central Park and visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A highlight of the trip was completing a scavenger hunt at the Met that served as a culmination to the students’ Global Studies I course. The International Culture Club researches

a region’s culture and then cooks ethnic food to eat together. Regions studied in the 2016-17 school year included Canada, Australia, Africa and Mesoamerica. The group’s advisor is Deb Gutierrez. The Arts & Crafts Club, advised by Kim Swartz, met twice a month after school to work on projects.
