The fifty-fifth commencement ceremony for the Eastern Lebanon County School District was held in the New Beginnings Auditorium in Myerstown on Thursday, June 7, 2018. The ceremony opened with Ryan McAllister delivering the invocation and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The senior members of the ELCO High School Chorus sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and Jalissa Nolt welcomed staff, family and friends to the ceremony. Mason Bennetch and Alexandra Gates, student orators, presented their speeches, “Realizing Your Potential” and “Learning to Walk,” respectively. Members of the ELCO High School Concert Choir performed the choral selection “The River.” Ms. Jennifer Haas, High School Principal, then introduced Mr. James Thomas, High School Science Teacher, as the commencement speaker. Mr. Thomas was selected by the senior class to give the commencement address at this year’s ceremony. Mrs. Amy Shoemaker, Director of Pupil Services, presented Mr. Thomas with the Commencement Speaker Award. Mrs. Barbara Davis, Assistant Superintendent, along with High School Principal Jennifer Haas and Assistant Principal Craig Soden, presented the departmental awards to the top scholastic students in each curricular area. ELCO HIGH SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT

Eastern Lebanon County School District’s Mission Statement ____________________ The mission of the ELCO School District is to prepare ALL students, K-12, to be successful for THEIR futures.

The fifty-fifth commencement ceremony for the Eastern Lebanon County School District was held in the New Beginnings Auditorium in Myerstown on Thursday, June 7, 2018.

The ceremony opened with Ryan McAllister delivering the invocation and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The senior members of the ELCO High School Chorus sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and Jalissa Nolt welcomed staff, family and friends to the ceremony. Mason Bennetch and Alexandra Gates, student orators, presented their speeches, “Realizing Your Potential” and “Learning to Walk,” respectively. Members of the ELCO High School Concert Choir performed the choral selection “The River.”

Ms. Jennifer Haas, High School Principal, then introduced Mr. James Thomas, High School Science Teacher, as the commencement speaker. Mr. Thomas was selected by the senior class to give the commencement address at this year’s ceremony. Mrs. Amy Shoemaker, Director of Pupil Services, presented Mr. Thomas with the Commencement Speaker Award.

Mrs. Barbara Davis, Assistant Superintendent, along with High School Principal Jennifer Haas and Assistant Principal Craig Soden, presented the departmental awards to the top scholastic students in each curricular area. The following students received awards for the indicated curricular areas:

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SPRING 2018 SPORTS SEASON AT ELCO.

Track & Field Congratulations to the boys’ program for completing the season with a 5-3 record. Top performers on the team were Ryan McAllister, Jared Weaver, Elijah Herb, Justin Kegerise, Grant Brubaker, Mitchell Gray, and Cole Nelson. Jared Weaver qualified for the District and PIAA Meet in the Pole Vault and placed 5th at Districts. Jared Weaver set the school record in the Pole Vault, clearing 13’9”. The girls’ team finished the season with a perfect 8-0 record, winning the Lancaster-Lebanon Section 3 Championship. Top performers on this year’s team were Jalissa Nolt, Kaylin Nolt, Kaylisa Montijo, Lily Brubaker, Julia Nelson, Ryelle Shuey, Katelyn Rueppel, Emily Bidelspach, Abbie Keath, Jordan Rosengrant, Natalie Swingholm, and Deziree Balthaser. Ryelle Shuey placed 8th at the District Meet in the Shot Put. Three school records were broken this season with Ryelle Shuey in the Shot Put (37’3”), Emily Bidelspach tied the Pole Vault mark at (10’), and the 4x100 Meter Relay Team of Natalie Swingholm, Devon Rosengrant, Julia Nelson, and Katelyn Rueppel (51.87). The “Bob and Louise Trump Junior High Invitational.” was held on Saturday, April 14 and was a great success. Special thanks to the track coaches, varsity team members and Booster Club who worked to make this a great event. Baseball The baseball team completed a successful season with a 10-10 record. Unfortunately, the team did not qualify for the League or District Playoffs. Clay Hain, Travis Weaver, and Dakota Smith did the majority of the starting pitching. The top hitters on the team were, Travis Weaver, Clay Hain, Joe Ginder, and Braden Bohannon. Roger Hehnly did an excellent job in his first year as the head coach.

ATHLETICALLY SPEAKING

Softball The softball team completed the season with a 3-17 record. Sarah Yermalovich and Amaya Phillips were the team leaders in hitting and pitching. Amaya Phillips set two school records with most RBI’s in a Career (66) and Highest Batting Average in a Career (.409). Boys Tennis The tennis team completed the season with a 5-8 record. Congratulations to Mason Bennetch for placing 2nd in the League Singles Tournament and Bennetch and Dawson Smith for placing 2nd in the Doubles Tournament. Bennetch and Smith also qualified for the District Doubles Tournament and won their first-round match. Awards The ELCO High School held the annual Awards Program on Wednesday, May 23. Kayla Henson received the Robert Clauser Memorial Award, Ryan McAllister and Jalissa Nolt won the PIAA District III Sportsmanship Award. Mason Bennetch, Ryan McAllister, and Jalissa Nolt were the winners of the District III Academic Excellence Award. Joe Ginder and Emily Bidelspach were ELCO’s nominees for the Pop Kelchner Award. (Each school in the county and surrounding area nominates a female and male athlete to represent their school.) These individuals were honored at a student-athlete recognition breakfast on Sunday, May 20 at the Lebanon Days Inn. Ryan McAllister and Jalissa Nolt were selected as the Lebanon Valley Kiwanis Scholar Athletes. This award goes to a male and female athlete that is both excellent in the classroom and athletic field. They were treated to a luncheon on Thursday, May 3, in Lebanon. The U.S. Army Scholar Athlete Award winners were Jared Weaver and Vivian Lattanze. Joe Ginder and Katie Fields were selected as the U.S. Marine Distinguished Athlete Award winners.

Katie Fields and Mason Bennetch were ELCO’s selection for the A. Landis Brackbill Award. This award goes to the top male and female student-athlete in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. All applicants must have participated in a minimum of two sports and have a minimum 3.0 grade point average throughout their high school career. All the student-athletes nominated for this award in the Lancaster-Lebanon League were recognized at a luncheon on Tuesday, May 15 at the Eden Resort. The high school weight room will be open this summer for all ELCO athletes entering grades 7-12 on Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Senior Citizens 60 and older who reside in the ELCO community are also welcome to use the fitness room Monday – Thursday from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. Everyone must enter at door #15, which is the weight room hallway and must sign in and out every time they use the facility. Wednesday, May 30, the ELCO Athletic Department honored and recognized 15 of the senior student-athletes that are going to further their academic and athletic career in post-secondary education.
