President’s Message:

James Maxwell - APWA New York Metro Chapter First, let me thank the membership for electing me the 2018 President of the New York Metropolitan Chapter of the American Public Works Association. This is my fourth year serving as an officer and sixth as a member of the Executive Board. While our Chapter continues to meet its obligations with respect to implementing established Best Management Practices, our membership continues to shrink slighting each year as a result of retirements, changes in everyday job responsibilities and the demands placed upon our profession to do more with less. Membership in professional organizations serves to increase one’s body of knowledge through the ability to network with any number of individuals on a multitude of subjects. I urge the membership to seek out non-APWA members and inform them of the value-added aspects of APWA membership. Our 29th Annual Equipment, Products and Services Exposition, held at the Orangetown Highway Department was a great success. For the first time, we were able to present two training sessions, one with continuing education credits available through APWA and a second presented by the Cornell Local Roads Program. Between 27 and 30 individuals participated in each session. Many thanks to Jim Dean, Stephen Munno and the staff of the Town of Orangetown Highway Department for their continuous support of Chapter efforts. As the year roles along, we will continue to inform the membership of available training opportunities as well as legislation which will impact municipal operations including the environment, emergency management and transportation. Chapter Members Attend New Jersey Chapter

Equipment Show an Exposition

Members of the New York Metro Chapter took time from their busy schedules to visit our brethren from the New Jersey Chapter at their annual Equipment and Services Exposition at the Raritan Convention Center in Edison, New Jersey on April 18, 2018. The Expo featured some 67 vendors with over 500 public works professionals and staff attending. In addition to the exhibits, two opportunities to gain CPWM CEU/PDH credits at no extra cost were included. The Expo was free of charge for individuals pre-registering and lunch was served. Executive Board members Jim Maxwell, Stephen Munno, Peter Sciliano and Mount Pleasant Fleet Manager David Barker met with New Jersey Chapter President Dan Carey to discuss how our Chapters could continue work together to be of better service to our members. The two Chapter Presidents agreed to meet at PWX Kansas City.

Town of Mount Pleasant Gets The Paving Season Started

Looking to get a jump on the 2018 paving season after an exceptionally cold and wet spring, Mount Pleasant Town Highway Superintendent Peter Sciliano got his paving program underway with a hot in place asphalt recycling project. Three individual burner units heat the asphalt pavement while the fourth scarifies the material, places it in a hopper, adds liquid asphalt and resurfaces the roadway. A ten-ton roller finishes the process. The entire train of tractor drawn trailers is computer controlled so drivers can perform other functions associated with the operation. A micro surfacing overlay will complete the project.

Once Again the Annual Equipment and Products Expo Draws Record

May 23rd 2018 proved to be a record day for visitors to the Chapter’s Annual Equipment and Products Exposition. The day started off at 8:45 AM with a 1-hour presentation by Jim Maxwell, CSM and Chapter President on Stormwater Management, Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping. APWA provided 1 Continuing Education Credit, available to both members and non-members of APWA. At 10:00 AM, after some very short speeches, the ceremonial ribbon was cut and the continental breakfast was available as our public works and associated organization colleagues began to visit the vendors of equipment and products. A second training session, presented by the Cornell Local Roads Program was presented at 10:15 AM. At 12:40 PM, all present were asked to join the Chapter and Branch leadership at the band stand for recognition of those present, presentations recognizing Public Works Week and raffling of door and other prizes. Presentations in recognition of Public Works Week were made by New York State Deputy Commissioner of Worker Protection James Rogers on behalf of Governor Cuomo, Rockland County Executive Edward Day, Town of Orangetown Supervisor Christopher

Day and Town of Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann. The Expo had a banner year with 56 vendors participating including Dan Carey, President of the New Jersey APWA Chapter. Each vendor received a Certificate thanking them for their participation.

APWA Presents the First Responder Logo

The American Public Works Association is proud to announce the creation of a national “Public Works First Responder” symbol. In November 2017, the APWA Board of Directors approved the adoption of the symbol below for use throughout North America to identify public works personnel and acknowledge their federally-mandated role as first responders.
