Pamela Hickson-Stevenson Named New Library Director

Pamela Hickson-Stevenson assumed leadership of the library system in April. She formerly was the deputy director for 12 years. Hickson-Stevenson is the library’s first female director since 1927.

“Pam has been outstanding in serving the library in numerous ways,” said Ray Weber, President, Library Board of Trustees. “With her broad range of experience and passion for public library service, we look forward to having her lead the Akron-Summit County Public Library to the next level.”

Before she began at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, Hickson-Stevenson served as director of the Portage County, Wadsworth and Wayne County public libraries and as assistant director of the Elyria Public Library.

Active in various community organizations, Hickson-Stevenson serves on the boards of the International Institute of Akron and Ohio Living Rockynol. She also is a member of the Advisory Group for the Akron Financial Empowerment Center in Kenmore and is active in Leadership Akron. Previously she was a member of the South Portage, Wooster and Wadsworth Rotary Clubs. She also served on the boards of Medina County Project: LEARN and United Way of Wooster.

Hickson-Stevenson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Mount Union College and a Master of Science in Library Science degree from Case Western Reserve University. She is a Certified Ohio Public Librarian. Her professional contributions include having served as a member of the governing council of the American Library Association and president of the Ohio Library Council, the NOLA Regional Library System and the North Central Library Cooperative. She also has served as an adjunct instructor at the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science where she taught courses in public libraries and library management.

TWEEN SPACEOpens at

Main LibraryMain Library’s new Tween Space is

now open! The area, geared for 5th- and 6th-graders, was designed by learners from the National Inventors Hall of Fame STEM Middle School. Student teams developed plans to make the space more useful and attractive for their peers. Additional support was provided by Akron Community Foundation, Shaw Contract, Sherwin Williams, APS Office Furnishings, Akron Public Schools, artist Julie Hogarth, and many others.

Join us for readings by Voices from the Rust Belt editor Anne Trubek, founder of Belt Publishing and Belt Magazine, and writer/contributor Jason Segedy.

Voices from the Rust Belt is published by PICADOR, an imprint of Macmillan.

No registration necessary. Book signing will follow.

Featuring her brand new novel The Secrets Between Us

The popular writer Thrity Umrigar is the author of seven novels and a memoir, including the national bestselling novel The Space Between Us (2006). Umrigar never expected to write a sequel to this beloved novel until she caught herself pondering the fate of one of its minor characters and, in a flash, envisioned the entire plot and its intertwining characters. Already, The Secrets Between Us is attracting attention and rave reviews.

Salman Rushdie writes: “Thrity Umrigar has written a moving human tale that vividly brings to life both the women and the city of Mumbai.”

A former columnist for the Akron Beacon Journal, Umrigar is now Associate Professor of English at Case Western Reserve University.
