INDIVIDUAL, DIVERSE AND INSPIRINGDerby Cathedral Quarter is unique in so many ways. Here is a flavour of some of the many reasons why this area is so special and popular with visitors.

www.derbycathedralquarter.co.uk

PET FRIENDLYBritain is a nation of pet lovers and the Cathedral Quarter is no exception. From pooches to parrots, scores of business owners in the Cathedral Quarter welcome their clients and customers in a very unique way.The Cathedral Quarter BID has engaged with many more people recently on social media with its #CQPetproject campaign – highlighting the scores of businesses who bring their pets into work or who welcome customers’ dogs into their premises. Here are just some of the more unexpected business ‘staff’ in the Cathedral Quarter.More can be seen on Facebook at CathedralQuarterDerby where there is also a list of dog-friendly establishments.

STEEPED IN TRADITION The Cathedral Quarter has the largest concentration of family-owned and longstanding businesses in the city who have been serving customers in the city for many decades.

The Market Hall has more than its fair share of businesses that have stood the test of time. These include Poyntons, which have been established for 171 years, Flowers by Joy who have been family-owned for 100 years and many more businesses who have been passed down the generations.

Watts 1858 have, as the name suggests, been in the city for 161 years and Brigdens has

been established in the Market Place since 1876.

Other well-known local names include Anderson in The Strand, Friar Gate

Alterations and Motorplus in Chapel Street which have been here for 57, 40 and more than 30 years respectively.

A WARM WELCOMEThe Cathedral Quarter Rangers were one of the first services to be established by local businesses under the BID programme and the current Rangers Jon and Scott are popular with both businesses and visitors alike.Dressed in distinctive burgundy uniforms, the Rangers are an important link between businesses and statutory agencies such as Derbyshire Police and Streetpride – reporting issues and being the ‘eyes and ears’ around the Cathedral Quarter.Their duties include welcoming visitors to the area – guiding people to where they want to go, highlighting the various events that are coming up and pointing out the sights not to be missed in this unique part of the city centre. The Rangers run their own Instagram account with great pictures and posts around the area. Follow at @cqrangers to see the Cathedral Quarter from a Ranger’s perspective.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLYDerby Cathedral Quarter is working towards becoming recognised as a dementia friendly community with special training for businesses and awareness sessions planned across the coming months.

Working with specially-trained Dementia Champions, businesses will be shown how to make simple changes to their premises and customer service to better cater for people living with dementia.A number of businesses currently offer dementia friendly services including Queens Leisure Centre which provides weekly dementia friendly swimming sessions, and Quad who offer dementia friendly film screenings.

PEREGRINE PROJECTFor anyone who missed the Cathedral Peregrines recently – make a note in your diary not to miss this fantastic spectacle next summer.Peregrine Falcons first nested on Derby’s Cathedral in 2006 and the Peregrine Project is now run by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with Derby City Council, Derby Cathedral and Cathedral Quarter BID.A series of Watch Point events are held on Cathedral Green between late May and early July, manned by volunteers with telescopes so that everyone can see the pair and their young as they take their first foray in the outside world.Keep up to date at the blogsite: http://derbyperegrines.blogspot.com/

CQ HISTORY TRAILDerby Cathedral Quarter has proudly preserved its charm and character over the centuries and mirrors the city’s rich tapestry of culture and heritage. This is the historic heart of the city with much of the architecture dating back to Tudor, Georgian and Victorian times nestled around the magnificent Derby Cathedral featuring the 16th Century 212 ft tower.

As well as a wide range of historic buildings, there is a wealth of Blue Plaques, monuments and other attractions commemorating famous names and dates that helped to shape not only Derby but other pioneering moments around the world.

Here are some of the highlights you can expect to see on a tour of the Cathedral Quarter. The trail starts and finishes on the Market Place but you may choose to wander at your leisure, taking in some of the most beautiful parts of the city along the way.

The War Memorial in the Market Place was unveiled in 1924 with an inscription to the fallen of the Second World War subsequently added. It was re-dedicated by the Bishop of Derby in 1993.

This plaque in the Lock Up Yard commemorates the talents of ‘King of Football’ and Derby County player Steve Bloomer who was Derby County’s record goal scorer as well as an England international footballer and manager.

A plaque in Wardwick commemorates Markeaton Brook bursting its banks and causing unprecedented flooding to the city centre on May 22nd 1932.

The statue of Michael Thomas Bass stands tall in Wardwick celebrating his leadership of the famous Bass brewery and marking his generosity in donating the Derby Museum and Art Gallery to the city.

St Werburgh’s Church is a Grade II listed building and re-opened as a place of worship in 2017.

The Friary was a townhouse built in 1731 by Samuel Crompton. It is built on part of the grounds of the Blackfriars Dominican monastery. Behind the building are the remains of a much older wall, thought to be part of the old friary.

The Old Bell Hotel in Sadler Gate is one of Derby’s oldest and largest coaching inns. The building has numerous ghost stories which have spawned from its 350 year history.

A plaque at Jorrocks in Iron Gate commemorates William Cavendish, Lord Lieutenant in the mid-18th century who commanded his own troop of loyal Derbyshire Blues in the venue and was famously courted by ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’.

Did You Know?

Clockmaker John Whitehurst began his business in 1726 and one of his first projects

There are references to Joseph Wright of Derby throughout the Cathedral Quarter including the Armillary Sphere memorial on Iron Gate near his birthplace.

Number 16 St. Mary’s Gate was designed in 1893 by John Somes Story, the County’s architect. Built in 1894-5 the building was originally used as a police station, and more recently administrative offices and a Police museum. It became the Cathedral Quarter Hotel in May 2008.

Derby Cathedral is a Grade I listed building which was upgraded in 1927 as the seat of the Bishop of Derby. The original church of All Saints was built in the mid-10th century and the main body of the church was completed in 1725.

Ye Olde Dolphin is Derby’s oldest surviving pub – first licensed in 1530 – and a fine example of a timber-framed building. Renowned as the stopping off point for highwaymen, a hidden room was recently discovered on the first floor.

The Old Clockworks in Queen Street was home to two important Derbeians. John Flamsteed made the earliest recording of the planet Uranus in 1690 and Joseph Wright was an acclaimed English landscape and portrait painter.

St Helen’s House in King Street is now the home of Smith Cooper but was historically the residence of MP and anti-slavery campaigner John Gisborne as well William Strutt – a renowned civil engineer, architect and inventor.

This Blue Plaque on Flint Bishop’s building in St Michael’s Lane marks the birthplace of Jacob Rivers, a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his bravery in WWI.

Derby Silk Mill on the site of the world’s first factory is part of the UNESCO inscribed Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site.

The Bonnie Prince Charlie statue commemorates Charles Edward Stuart’s march into Derby and subsequent flight in 1745.

A Blue Plaque commemorating the life and works of Dr John Hollis can be found at the HUUB offices in Full Street. He is recognised for reviving Freemasonry in the city.

Dr Percival Willoughby pioneered gynaecology and a Blue Plaque is installed in his memory on the side of the Registry office building in the Market Place where he lived between 1660 and 1685.

The Guildhall was built in 1828 as Derby’s Town Hall. Having suffered a fire in 1841, hosted a visit from Queen Victoria in 1891 and the infamous trial of Alice Wheeldon in 1917, it closed in 1949 and opened as a theatre in 1975.

The Strand Arcade connects Sadler Gate to The Strand and was built between 1871 – 1874

to echo designs of London’s Burlington Arcade.
