COMING ATTRACTIONS

The end of another OAA year is a fitting time to recognize and

thank each of the officers, board member and volunteers who have

kept the organization running. We would love to do this by indi-

vidual name and duty, but the list would be much too long for

space available.

However, a special thanks must go to Treasurer Dan Miller who

will turn over his duties to Kirk Smallidge at the end of the next

OAA year. Each year for the last five, Dan has processed thou-

sands of dollars in checks from hundreds of members for dues,

travel, and luncheon activities. In addition, he has been the ac-

counts payable person for such things as printing and mailing

costs, office supplies, and fees. Each month he has submitted a

complete financial report broken into seven activities. Thank you,

Dan, you have done well! We will miss you.

******************************************************

Margaret Mirante, the Hospitality Committee, and many of us

who have enjoyed a home-made goodie following an auditorium

program, send a big THANK YOU to everyone who brought

something for the refreshment table during the past year.

******************************************************

During the coming 2019-2020 OAA year, the executive board has

voted to reduce the number of luncheon events from three to two.

The first luncheon will be during the 2019 holiday season and sec-

ond in the spring of 2020. The number of auditorium programs

will increase to seven.

“Summer”

In late spring, just the sound of the word will still often send a

spark into me. I think It probably jumps from the ashes of old

school-day memories when anticipation of the coming long days

with nothing to do but mess around overpowers attention to the

blackboard. Summers seemed to last so long back then. Well,

they were long! During the school year there were only a few holi-

days and no ”vacation weeks” to stretch out the schedule. Nor were there “snow days” to be added on at the end. If school was canceled, the missed day was just somehow absorbed by the fol-

lowing days.

Of course, the spark also could have flown from embers of the

summer I discovered a girl in my own backyard, an event that

surely led to the warmest winter of ‘47-’48 never recorded in Iowa’s meteorological records.

Have a great summer, everyone!

Jim Reuter

Upcoming Continuing Education Courses in 2018 - 2019!

HOW TO REGISTER FOR COURSES: There are many easy ways to register for MCC courses. Call 860-512-3232 to register by phone. Be sure to have your credit card ready. Or, if you have access to the Internet, you can download a registration form at www.manchestercc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018-19 Summer-Credit-Free-Session-catalog.pdf and send in your completed form with a check or money order. You can also find a registration form in any printed MCC Credit-Free catalog. The easiest way is to register in person the next time you are on campus for a monthly OAA meeting! The Registrar’s Office is in the main lobby of the SSC Building and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration allows the instructor and course schedulers to prepare materials for the course and to contact students in the event of a scheduling change or cancellation.

Understanding Dimensions in Art: Part 2

This course will be interdisciplinary in nature, incorporating ideas about shapes and dimensions as represented by the fields of geometry, art,

and science. It will continue to explore the artistic dimensions employed by modern artists to create their work. Come learn how to use this

knowledge to understand and analyze artworks ranging from the Pop Art master Andy Warhol, to the contemporary artists like Anselm

Kiefer and Lee Ufan. The instructor will provide visuals and handouts.

Emily Dickinson - Poems, Life and Death

Unrecognized in her own time, Emily Dickinson is now regarded as perhaps America's greatest poet. Increasingly reclusive, she left a legacy

of over 1700 poems that have had an enormous influence on American and world literature. After an introduction to her surprisingly well-

documented, yet nonetheless mysterious, life, we will read and discuss several poems by the writer of whom scholar Harold Bloom has said:

"Except for Shakespeare, Dickinson manifests more originality than any other Western poet since Dante." The instructor will provide visuals

and handouts.

CRN 20617 | Fee: $6 | 1 Friday | 6/28 | Noon-1:30 PM | AST Room E202

Instructor: David Garnes,M.A., M.L.S.

What’s UP with Stock? Too much information from the financial guy? Come learn about StockFetcher! This online tool will show you how to use simple English

phrases to program and build your portfolio. With more than 100 preset indicators the instructor will investigate a few of the more commonly

used filters that will allow you to cut down the vast universe of stocks to a smaller number that meets your specific need. The browser-based

software is available in a free and paid format. Instructor provides handouts.

CRN 20745 | Fee: $6 | 1 Friday | 6/21 | Noon-1:30 PM | LRC B144

Instructor: Steven Bloom, M.Ed.

More Letters for Annie: Memories from World War II

The instructor will once again invite local Author Joe McGee as he continues with the tales of the untold story of the Lombardo Family Let-

ters. Brothers Pat, Tony, John, and Vic Lombardo, who all served in two branches in the US military sent their sister Annie many letters

about the daily struggles of being at war. McGee will share more stories and shed more light on the untold stories of the Lombardo brothers.

The instructor will provide handouts.

CRN 20654 | Fee: $6 | 1 Friday | 7/26 |Noon-1:30 PM | AST Room E202

Instructor: John Lombardo, M.B.A.

Alaska: The Last Frontier

Have you ever visited Alaska? If yes, perhaps it was during the usual tourist season from May to early September. But have you ever gone

during the winter and experienced the excitement of the Iditarod or witnessed the largest Ice Sculpture contest in the world? Join me as we

‘tour’ both the beauty of summertime Alaska and the elegance of winter in The Last Frontier. CRN 20769 | Fee: $6 | 1 Friday | 7/12 | Noon-1:30 PM | AST Room E202
